Biggest misconception about me is that I'm not athletic. I will admit to having poor small motor coordination, however, I am surprisingly strong. I don't mind moving furniture around.
@lizgrace03 I am in academia, in a bit of a different role--I'm an academic librarian. Depending on the university you're at, when you're a librarian, you are either considered professional staff, or you're part of the faculty. I'm the latter, which means I had to also go through the tenure and promotion process. Only a couple of people in my department have PhDs but many of us, including myself, have two master's degrees--one in information science and one in a subject area, which we end up using as expertise in helping faculty and students. Mine is in children's literature.
We waited to start TTC until after I got tenure, which was 3 or 4 years ago. Our faculty is also unionized, which I am extremely grateful for. I get a very nice leave--6 or 8 weeks of paid "sick" time, 6 weeks paid FMLA, and then 6 weeks unpaid FMLA if I want it, which I do. With how my due date falls, I also get all of my regular university breaks (thanksgiving, 2+ weeks at Christmas, winter break) and none of that counts toward any of the leave time. It ends up being about 5 months off. I hope nobody hates me when they read that. I know I'm incredibly lucky.
Our contracts are 8-month contracts so that also means I don't have to work in the summer at all if I don't want to. Still trying to decide if I will or not, because we are paid quite a bit of money to work part of summer term.
Sorry if that was way too much info! Now I want to know what you're getting a PhD in, and what your plans are! Sorry if you've shared this already and I missed it!
This is awesome. I wouldn't say I'm jealous of you, because jealous has a bad connotation. More like, I'm inspired by you. Sounds like a fantastic career.
As for me, I'm getting ready to start my 4th year as a PhD student in geography. Back story: I have two undergrad degrees, one in "Law and Society" (originally thought I was going to be a lawyer, then met an actual lawyer and changed my mind- no offense to any lawyers on the board, just NMS), and one in secondary social studies education. I worked as a 7th grade geography teacher for two years, and that is where I developed an interest in urban geography. Specifically, neighborhood change. I got my Master's in 2011 and started working on my PhD. I have a 5 year fellowship, which gives me two more years to finish--right now, I'm done with my coursework and almost finished with my dissertation proposal.
As for the baby, my advisor is letting me work some of my assistantship hours proactively and then take off November-December. So I'll have about 9 weeks off, paid. I had considered taking a Spring leave, but my MIL is going to help with LO, I can work from home, and I'm the type of person that gets antsy if I don't have much to do. So as of now, I'm planning to go back in the spring. However, this may change...
ETA, I realize I'll have plenty to do when LO arrives. I guess I meant I'm the type of person that gets antsy when I'm not around other people which is why I'm tempted to go back in the spring. I didn't meant that I wouldn't be busy if I decide to stay home, at all!!
another case of bitchy resting face here i think a big misconception of me is since i suffer from bitchy resting face that i'm mean or bitchy. not true at all! it takes me a little while to warm up to people but once i do i'm an open book. i love exchanging stories and hearing about other people's lives.

Question for everyone: What is something that most people (on here and IRL) would be surprised to learn about you?
Most people know I like to write. Only my closest friends know that I write fan fiction. (I did say I was nerdy....) Not so much nowadays, but back in high school college I did a ton on Buffy.

My circle of friends is very tight. Although I love to socialize with everyone, I am very overprotective and tend to filter out who I call my friend. I will cut someone off at the drop of a dime. I go hard for my friends and if I'm willing to do that for them it should be vice versa.
@Maelara this may be too personal. If so sorry. But why do you consider yourself overweight? I saw your picture you posted a while back and to me you were nowhere near it. (I know bmi, doctors, and all that bs but seriously you looked just fine.)
You're so sweet I wear my weight well but yes, according to my weight and bmi I am overweight. I've also lost almost 30lbs since being pregnant so that helps

Something about your past that you're not proud of: When I turned 18, I irresponsibly signed up for credit cards & got sucked into pointless debt. Still paying them off now.
It seems like you would be a fun person to party with.
I moved to NYC when I was 18-20 and yes way tooooo much fun. But I had my first child at 21 and have been raising kids since. I do go out with friends and H. I know my limitations. I've never done hard core drugs or pills. I like jäger and rum. I go out to have fun, not get stupid. I love to dance, and will be the last one dancing on the floor. I like to hold dinner parties or dessert parties. I have a huge variety of friends to fit any occasion. Haha my friends and I have been friends for 13+ years so lots of history and life moments celebrated and mourned between us.
@dbagwife don't hate me but I always read your screen name as douche bag wife. What does it actually stand for?
Oh my gosh I love it!! It totally doesn't stand for douche bag wife! Though, I'm sure my husband would crack up! It stands for "Dirty Boat Guy". My husband is special forces, and it's a nickname for his specific job! So I'm a DBG wife haha.

I feel you girl ! I always loved dancing and raggae clubs were my thing in my late teen years. I also had my daughter at 21 and then I slowed down to just going on special occasions . Now I just reminisce on all the good times I had

When younger, did you party a lot ?

I also have the permanent bitch face and it makes me so sad. I'm probably the nicest person ever and I hate when people think I'm mean!
Something people might not know: I slept around and partied in high school. Settled down in college.
