SS : scary **update***

First I started with an ocular migraine. My right eye went, how I describe, you're looking through water. Then my arm went completely numb. Numb like I couldn't move it it felt like a lead arm. Then it went to my face even my gums were numb and tongue. As any one had experience with this? I called my dr the office is closed so I'm waiting for him to call back. This was so scary especially when I couldn't form a sentence. Like I knew what I want to say but the words wouldn't come out or I couldn't pronounce that word properly. UPDATE: everything went well. Was monitored for awhile Vivian is a complete monkey moving around in there. They ended up taking a ton of blood to make sure I didn't have a clotting issue (which I won't get back until Monday). Also she wanted me to take some Imetrex through an IV but I refused as the episode didn't last long and it's the only headache I've had. For now I'm told I need to sleep as much as possible, drink way more water (on top of my 10 glasses a day), and if it happens again don't call anyone just go right to L&D. Thanks for all your advice and thoughts! Love all my preggo ladies!!! ❤️❤️❤️

  • Serious stroke symptoms! Have someone take you to the ER now! This is considered a priority 1 medical call based on your symptoms, which means ambulance would come lights and sirens to you. Seek help!

  • It was terrifying! I lost it when I couldn't articulate a sentence, my poor DD wouldn't leave me and help my hand the whole time (she's 2 1/2) so far the migraine it gone and my arm has full feeling back it's just my face. I called the OB like 30 minutes ago. She happens to be the L&D at our hospital too.

  • Call an ambulance right now if you haven't!

  • I would totally go to the ER. If you don't have anyone who can take you call an ambulance. Those are very serious symptoms. Please don't wait for a call back, just go right in. Even if you are feeling better now, you could have had a mini stroke and sometimes they are followed by a more serious one. Keeping you in my thoughts and hoping everything is just fine.

  • I agree with PP and would head to the ER, my sister has had 5 strokes before the age of 30 and trust me every minute does count! There is a shot they can give you to help lessen the damage from the clot. You are at higher risk of clots when pregnant so please go!
  • I agree with the PP - ER, stat! My father has suffered several TIA episodes (mini-strokes, essentially) and they're scary things and can be indicators of larger problems. The first one directly lead to him getting a pacemaker.

Better safe than sorry - go!

  • Is there a way you can speak to the on-call doctor in L&D? 30 minutes is a long time for a call back, especially for symptoms like that.

This. Every minute counts and there are steps that can be taken to mitigate damage. Please go if you haven't already. Worst case scenario, it's nothing. Best case scenario, it's caught in time and permanent damage is avoided/reduced.

    Seriously, please go.

Just an additional note - migraines can come with symptoms that mimic a stroke; it's terrifying but more common than people realize.

My docs have made it pretty clear it's worth it (especially since it's rare that that I get migraines like this) to go to the ER when they happen, just in case it is a stroke (or more likely a TIA).

    This.

It is not 100% a stroke, migraines can present with stroke like symptoms.

    Have a symptoms resolved?

Either way, get to an ER for evaluation.

Good lord yes...ED now (to work up the differential diagnosis for complex migraine vs TIA/CVA). Please, I'm a registered nurse on a stroke certified unit, you must go now. Hopefully you are already there...
  • I agree with the previous posters...based on your symptoms, I'm also guessing that it is unlikely that your doctor is going to feel comfortable diagnosing you over the phone and/or telling you to just wait it out without having someone see you for further testing...as a previous poster said, it is highly likely that she will tell you to go to the ER.

I'm so glad you ended up going. Even if your headache is gone I hope they will do a CT at the least. I have ended up in the ER for something similar (ended up being a hemiplegic migraine, with loss of motor function, sensation on one side and ability to talk) and they had to do a lumbar puncture to rule out meningitis and CT scan to rule out stroke. Many hugs and hope you are okay.

My SIL gets these kinds of migraines and also has instructions to go to the ER every time just in case.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I had a migraine exactly like like once about 8 years ago. Scared the shit out of me. Blurry vision, numb on one side from my face to my feet. It went away in a couple of hours, but I had just completed my EMT training and was convinced it was a stroke as well. Always a good idea to go get checked out just in case, but hopefully it's just a really awful migraine. Apparently loss of feeling on one side is a rare but not completely uncommon symptom. Update when you can!

  • My hospital will not do Ct scans on pregnant women unless it's an emergency. Based on to the fact that your symptoms went away, maybe they are comfortable taking you out of "emergency" status? Nurses: can stroke symptoms clear up if it's an actual stroke, as opposed to a migraine?

Tia (transient ischemic attack or "mini stroke") have the same symptoms as a stroke but they go away after a few minutes. Even though the symptoms go away it is still important to explore further as it can be something serious!

This is true, a TIA may resolve very quickly but your risk for stroke (CVA) increases (about 10 percent) in the period immediately following the TIA; so many TIA patients are kept for observation. This is particularly true if the patient has had a TIA while already taking an anticoagulant - as this will be considered an anticoagulant failure and a new plan will need to be implemented.
  • Hope everything's okay! Thinking if you and Vivian! LOVE the name BTW.
