November 2014 Moms

What grandparent names do (or will) your parents and IL's have??

Right now we have a MiMi, BeBe, Pap Pap, Pop, GiGi, Cappy, Nana and Papa. My dad is gunning for K-Pa but I'm trying to talk him out of it.

What names are floating around in your families??

  • My parents will be Grandma and Grandpa (they are for my sister's kids).

Not sure what his parents will be, we haven't talked about it.

  • There are many cousins that have gone ahead, so the names are pretty well established on both sides.  My parents are Papsie and Ma'am-awe (no idea how you actually spell that) and DH's parents are just grandma and grandpa.

One of Dh's sisters goes by Auntie (and DH calls her Sissy) but whatever.  She was 20 when he was born, so not the typical sibling relationship.

  • Yeah, my parents names were definitely picked by the first grandchild, not by my parents.  She decided what she called them and all those that came after just followed her lead :)

  • My in-laws names are already established by other grandkids. DH's mom is Granny. DH's dad is Grandpa. DH's stepmom is Grandma.

My mom will probably my Nana and my stepfather will probably be Papa.

  • My parents are Omi and Poppy. ILs are Grammy Ann and Grampy.
  • My mom is Bunnie and my birth mom is Lovie. My dad would have been Popps. His mom will be GiGi- not sure what his dad wants to be called yet.
  • My parents are Grandmom and Poppop, same as I called my grandparents. Dd has a super close relationship with my mom (she used to be our FT babysitter) so she likes to call her "my pretty Grandmom". DH's parents are Granny and Poppop. His older brother determined that Mil had to be Granny b/c that's what her mother had been called. The kids sometimes get confused with 2 poppops, they will ask is that Grandmom's Poppop or granny's Poppop?

  • DS has a poppy, grandmom, gigimom, Gigi, mom mom, pop pop, pappy, granjan, and Grammi. It's kind of crazy!!
  • My parents are Grandmom and Grandpop, and my inlaws are Grammy and Grandpa (or sometimes Poppy).
  • My parents are MomMom and Granddad.  My MIL is Nana and FIL is Grandpa. @knitsmagee, our DS calls bananas "nanas" right now too.  Not sure what he thinks when we call MIL Nana...lol.

  • We call my grandparent Daddy Robert and Mama peggy. Peggy and Robert are their first names!

Although this will be our first child it is not the first grandchild on either side, so names have already been decided. Grandparents in my husbands side are JiJi and Nano (I really hated the name Nano but after 5 years, I've gotten over it) my parents go by Cookie and Pops.

  • @Ally1986, I agree with you about some of the names, too.  But keep in mind we don't get to pick them.  The grandparents pick what they would like to be called and even then the babies sometime make their own changes based on what they are able to pronounce.

  • My parents are Gamma & Opa and my inlaws are Grandma and Granddad.  It was major drama in my family about picking names b/c I am the baby of the family and had the first grandkid.  My oldest sister always assumed it would be her child that picked the names so she wanted to make sure that she was involved.  My father is from the Netherlands so there was no question that he would be Opa but my mom wasn't comfortable with Oma as she is not Dutch.  It took a little while but we actually picked my mom's name at my baby shower with lots of input from others.

  • @Ally1986 oh we have more! lol The full list is

My side: Parents: GiGi, Cappy and K-Pa Grandparents: Grandma, Grandpa, Nana and Papaw Great-Great-Grandparents: Hootenanny, Mimmi, Grandaddy and Grandmother

DH side: Parents: Mimi, Pap Pap, BeBe, Pop and Grandmother: Nonna.

There were 5 generations when I was born and they all had names already. My brother had the first grandbaby 3 years ago when my parents all picked their names. My DH's parents have been grandparents for 8 years. Way before I came along.

  • @Ally1986, we personally have not run into mispronunciation, but DS doesn't really say their names yet.  He doesn't see them often enough right now.  And we would correct him he came up with an alternate name for them.  As for why others don't, I can't say for sure.  I am guessing they just think it is cute.  I had one grandfather that we all called PopPop just because the first grandkids pronounced grandpa that way and no one ever changed it.

I don't love the fact that neither my mother or MIL wanted to be called Grandma and picked MomMom and Nana instead, but it wasn't my choice.  We are just going with it.

  • I was in 2nd or 3rd grade before I realized that people could have two Grandmas and two Grandpas. Totally blew my mind that they didn't have separate names for them.

I grew up with a Grandma and a Grandpa, and then my mom's parents were Memere (mem-ay) and Pepere (pep-ay). I know the spelling is weird, but that's how I was taught to spell it. I guess it's a French Canadian thing. So my mom is Memere and my grandmother is Memere FirstName. My dad started off as Grandpa, but wound up as Papa when DS couldn't pronounce it.

My IL's and Grandma and Grandpa, and Dh's grandmother (MIL's mother) is Grandma LastName.

My mom thought about being Grammy for a while, since that what her sister picked. I told her she could pick whatever she wanted and I would go with it, but I really hated Grammy. I plan to be a Memere one day.

  • My in-laws are Grandma and Papa. My parents live far away and DS rarely sees them. They are Grandma Sandy and Grandpa Dennis.

  • We called all grandparents either Grandma or Grandpa.  When my DD started talking (1st grandkid on both sides,) she called both Grandpa's "Papa."  It has stuck and now my kids & my sister's kids use Papa.

  • I had a Nanny, two Poppops and a Mommom.

My parents are Mommom and poppop and my grandmother is Meemom.

Everyone on my DH side is Mommal/Poppal first name (his mom, dad, both grandmothers and one grandfather) .... Except DH stepfather... He is Pops.
  • I called my Grandfather Doody, so my dad wants DooDad! Mom wants Gram Gram and StepMIL wants Nannie. No one else really knows yet!
  • My dad is Grandpa. We are super close to my family and I wanted the traditional grandpa.

We don't really call DHs parents anything. They are in mexico half the year and then they don't really pay much attention to family. MIL can't help it, she is mentally disabled now from strokes and more, DD doesn't really know them and is really super shy around them
Audrey is going to be a big sister!

  • My parents are Nonnie and Poppy. My husband's parents are Nana and Papa. This will be the second grandchild for both sides, so the names were already picked. My husband still has three grandparents, so they are NanaNana, GG (for great-grandma) and PapaPapa. They're all thrilled about this baby! :-)

My parents are Grandma and Grandpa. ILs chose Grammi (MIL wanted to spell it this way) and FIL is Poppi (after David Ortiz - huge Redsox fan). DS was the first grandchild on both sides so we let them pick what they wanted to be called.

My in-laws are pretty rational and go by grandma and grandpa but my parents said they were too young to be grandparents (at the young age of over 60:)) so they chose dude and dudette

  • My side was going to be grandpa and grandma since that is what their 1st grand kid was calling them and on DHs side they would be MIL was to be grandma and FIL papa and step MIL was Nana. We had our first Child and she decided everyone would be Papa and Nana with MIL still being Grandma Peggy and my grandma being grandma great.

My mom was adamant about not being called Grandma because it made her feel old.  So she decided she wanted to be called MiMi which always made me think of the big lady with all the eye makeup on the Drew Cary show.  Anyways, after having heard that name with my niece around for the last 2.5 years I'm ok with it.

We call my stepdad Papa, my dad Poppy, and are trying Oma & Opa form my IL.  DS's birth family just go by Grandma/Grandpa "First Name" so far.  I think we'll probably settle on something else for the IL's because it still feels forced to call them anything other than Grandma and Grandpa.

  • My mom will be GiGi, my dad will be Papa. FIL will be Grandpa. The fact that my dad will be Papa pisses my FIL so much, it's great. Not because he wants to be Papa, but because my DH called him Papa as a kid and he thinks DH should be Papa now that we are having kids. But DH is adamant that he will be Dad. Loving see my PITA FIL annoyed about something he cannot control since he is such a giant control freak *insert evil laugh here*

  • So far my girls call my parents nana and papa. My grandpa gets called grandpa still by both my girls. My grandmother before her passing insisted upon being called GGMa. Pretty cute, and easy for the girls to say. My kids only see my mil because of my fil's abusive behavior, and alcoholism. She's Grandma, and is happy to at least be in the girls lives.

  • My mom is going by Grandma but is now wishing she had something different. DS keeps saying, "Nana" but he says it in reference to random things (he's working on speaking still) but she wants to believe that he is calling her with it. Now she wants to take it on as her name. The problem is my MIL is going by "Nana" so I have to keep gently telling my mom that she can't use that one. Who would've thought drama would come from grandma names.  :-??

  • My parents will be Oma and Opa. DH's parents will be Mommom and Poppop which will be complicated because DH's grandparents are still alive and they are Mommom and Poppop (DH's parents and grandparents live 10 minutes from each other). We are going to have a lot of Mommoms and Poppops at family gatherings!
