Weight Gain.... How much is too much?!?!

Apparently my concerns or questions about my first pregnancy are just a big joke to others and frankly that's pretty ridiculous that i can express them and ask for others with possibly the same concerns or questions to discuss them with me. This is a DISCUSSION board - I didn't know there were feeds for bullying on The Bump.... pretty low guys....

  • if your dr isn't worried I wouldn't be worried. you gain what you gain. nothing you can do about it.

I am 26 weeks and I am struggling with this weight gain thing. I was a frequent smoker/coffee drinker prior to pregnancy and did not have a super healthy lifestyle (I ate a good fulfilling dinner every day, but besides that, coffee and cigarettes were my daily diet. I know, really healthy...), but my weight never fluctuated and i was 5'7" at a steady 140 lbs....

The DAY we found out i was expecting I quit the smoking AND the coffee cold turkey, immediately began daily vitamins and adjusting to actually eating 3-4 meals a day and paying attention to my diet. I knew this would have an effect on my weight, but i didnt know how much to expect.

    At 10 weeks, i had gained 7 lbs = 147 total
    At 15 weeks i had gained 3 more pounds = 150 total
    At 19 weeks i had gained 10 more pounds! = 160 total
    At 23 weeks i had gained another 16 pounds! = 176 TOTAL!

Most of my books and things are telling me its very difficult to estimate how much weight is healthy. But most are saying at 23 weeks i should have gained 10-12 pounds total, where as I have gained 36! My Dr. doesn't seem to be too worried. Test are coming back normal, but i personally am concerned and am curious to find out if this is ore common than the books say or if I really need to be careful and something could be wrong? Mt Dr says its all water weight and not to worry.... Im not swelling and my rings and things are all fitting just fine as always. It appearsto me to be all boobs and belly at this point.... Confused and worried!!!
    There is your answer.

  • I'm not worried I'M too heavy by all means, i think i may have been under weight to begin with and I actually like what pregnancy is doing for my body! :-).... My concern is how much weight is HEALTHY to gain during pregnancy. Like i said, I dont know where it is all going but the scales don't lie and 16 pounds in 4 weeks just sounds like an unhealthy amount of weight to put on your body at one time. I was curiouse to fund out if others have similar weight gain over the course of a single month or if that is something i need to be looking into more and/or monitoring....
  • OP I stopped reading at "My Dr. doesn't seem to be too worried," because you shouldn't worry if your doctor isn't worried. I'm glad s/he's not worried and you should be glad too!

This. I'm not sure what else there is to discuss.
  • Ummm you are going to gain weight when you are pregnant. If it was an issue your doctor would say something! I'm 5'1 and at 30 weeks I'm up 21lbs and my doc said I'm on track so I wouldn't worry about it!

But honestly, like PPs said if your DR isnt worried you shouldn't be either.

As PP has said, if you're doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be. Honestly, this post feels very AWish to me, the photos only added to that...

    AGREED!!!!!!
  • Wow - this is my first pregnancy and all i have to go by are the books and information i have been reading about what to expect and what is healthy and what to look out for. I thought this was supposed to be a community blog where people with legitimate concerns or questions can go to ask opinions and/or advice from others who are experiencing something similar! I posted the photos to show according to each week i stepped on a scale where the weight is going. By all means this was not intended to be a "woe is me" post and i wast looking for flattering comments. I was looking for comments a little more like "at 23 weeks i gained _____," and have more actual pregnant moms to communicate with as opposed to text books.

Guess this was my first and last time trying to get active with the pregnancy community. Those last few comments were really uncessecary and pretty rude.
  • I've actually lost weight during my pregnancy since I started out way overweight. Every pregnancy is different. If your weight gain were all in your ass and legs instead of your belly, I might be concerned. But clearly your doctor isn't concerned so you shouldn't be either. Also, HDBD is tomorrow. You should have waited to post your belly pictures there! If you don't know what that is, try reading the New Here thread!

Also at the bottom of your screen you'll notice the page numbers. To the right of that is a magnifying glass. Click on it and you can search the board for weight gain discussions. There used to be a weekly weigh in, but it stopped. It's a pretty sensitive topic for a lot of people.

I agree with PP. If your doctor isn't concerned it's not a "legitimate concern." Every pregnancy and every body is different.

I don't understand this. You're not worried that you are too heavy but you are worried that you have surpassed some kind of magic weight gain number? I don't understand.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I still don't understand the purpose of your original post.  Like others have said, if your doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be either.  I'm not sure why you would want to compare your weight gain to other woman who have different body types than you.  As long as you are eating healthy and giving up unhealthy behaviors (which you said you did) what's to worry about?  An average is just that, an average.  That means there are people who have gained less than the average amount and people who have gained more than the average amount.  Ever learned about a bell curve?  Would you have preferred me state my weight gain which has been minimal (most likely due to being shorter and overweight when I got pregnant) so that you could feel worse?  That just seems silly.

And how can you really have an opinion about our board when you have never posted here before?

  • Snarkalicious. @chickpea912 you win.
Oooh - does that mean if I keep practicing, I, too, might be a Snarky Queen?  I feel like we need a badge for that - I am very goals-oriented and need external praise to feel good about myself. ;)
-------- The "special guest" and all..everything was just great. I just hope she read it.

  • Also, most dead board on TB. I can't wait to see the fruits of her research.
  • seriously I love you guys. I can't believe she thought complaining about our board on another board would maybe go over a little better? she will never learn
  • I think she likes how she looks and was trying to show off! I think she was fishing for compliments! And you know, if she had posted her bump pics in HDBD threat she probably would have gotten it, but starting this thread was a BAD MOVE OP!!!
  • I had no idea that board even existed. So I guess I should thank the OP for the info!

  • I'm curious to know what would have happened if someone was like, "Holy shit, 36 pounds? What a fatty!" Because it VERY WELL could have gone that way on the interwebz. People are mean. I think everyone was actually pretty nice.

LOL, Rachel! I thought the same thing!

Lesson here: TB isn't for everyone. I probably should have included a babycenter link for her. It might be more her speed.
@KrystaJ I followed her to the other board and linked to that one as well as the WTEWE forums :)
