I haven't done laundry in over a week. We're moving tomorrow, all of our extra clothes are packed. With that being said, I went without panties yesterday. Also, I know this isn't the place for it, but I know it will be seen. I bought a new computer yesterday, just a cheapie as mine died unexpectedly, now I can't bump from the computer. Idk if its the bump or my computer, it keeps telling me a body is required. Anyone know what's up?
@ALHickok1 not sure if anyone suggested this but you can also click the <> box in the Leave a reply box and it will let you post.  But there won't be paragraph spacing (learned this when I responded to a check-in).

@EnglandXO - I'd bet money on the Philly Cheesesteak poutine being awful!  Come to Philly.  I get you real sammich.
I'll take your word for it. I have yet to find a Philly Cheesesteak, in any form, that I enjoy. I'll eat them, but I don't enjoy them.
Because they are SO BAD in other places!  I just don't order them outside of Philly because many restaurants don't know wtf they are doing.

I'll also get ya a soft pretzel out of some guy's van.  Philly keeps it real.
I'm from South Jersey, and I've been to Philly more times than I can count, and I've never had a cheesesteak. I do get an American hoagie from WaWa every time I go home to visit my family because WaWa is awesome.

It's at 6 pages.  I think I've waited long enough.

That woman is rotten. Enjoy her asshole responses and her lol'ing at other people's struggles.

Oh my, indeed.  I got way too rage-y when she implied that the awesome @dorothyzbornak97 shouldn't be having a child "so late in life."

I normally do not get my feathers ruffled very easily, but I have to admit I was ready to cut a bitch this morning. Something about that (along with all the other horrible shit she was spouting) just struck a nerve and I saw red. I'm over it now, but seriously, fuck that stupid bitch.

We love the shit out of you, Dorothy.

I don't even know Dorothy and I was ready to slap this bitch. How dare she? I mean, how the fuck dare she? Such ignorance crammed into one person should be illegal. I couldn't believe some of the stupidity coming out of her fingers.

  • I'm not going to lie, it would upset me to learn a stranger was kissing my hours old baby without my consent. Maybe my views will change once I have a kid or two, but for now newborn = easy target for disease.
I'm with you and @bbnut .  I have a 28 weeker (who is seven now) and while I am not outraged about a NICU nurse kissing a babies forehead,  I would frown upon it.  The same way I got pissy when strangers would walk up and touch her even months after her discharge.  They are immunocompromised and remain so for quite sometime.  I wouldn't want anyone kissing my preemie and a several illness are contagious before symptoms are present.  While I appreciate she cares so much and is a very loving nurse, I don't think that is a good idea.

  • I've never had anything from Starbucks, and I've only ever been in a Starbucks once.

You need to re-evaluate your life choices. Vanilla soy latte FTW!!
@mackenziesmama that will be my first order.  I'm not a big coffee drinker and the lingo and menu intimidates me.  And I'm a cheap bastard and will choke down cheap, gross coffee.  I realize how sad it is that I'm intimidated by a Starbucks menu, but I get anxious thinking that I'll be revealed as a coffee novice when I order.  But I'll just walk up to the counter and parrot "vanilla soy latte, please."  Thanks :)

Make sure you say "Tall Vanilla Soy Latte" or "Grande Vanilla Soy Latte" or "Vente Vanilla Soy Latte", otherwise they'll ask you.

Good to know @slappalicious thanks! Otherwise I'd probably freeze up and run out of Starbucks crying ;)

Wow. You'd fit in great with the stereotype we had about our L&D nurses at my hospital.

Glad your LO is doing well now :) I understand you feeling this way...but not all babies in the NICU are preemies. There are big babies who are withdrawing from drugs, or who have heart conditions and we just take care of them until they are big enough to go to surgery. I wouldn't kiss a 28 weeker. Although the tiny ones are the ones I love to take care of. It is amazing how hard they fight. They are so strong!
I get that.  I related your statment to *my* kid and thought later...eh not every baby in the NICU is a preemie.  But like I said, it doesn't make me stabby or anything but I'm glad you clarified.  I gotta admit it seems weird that some of the preemie moms on here were cool with their babies being kissed.  Maybe I was paranoid, but I wouldn't have liked that.

From a patients perspective, I can appreciate this. However it goes against every value I know from learning and practicing nursing to ever withold a med for ones own personal agenda. You just don't do it. At least, a nurse confident enough in themselves and their practice doesn't feel the need to stoop to that level.
This exactly.  I'm a new grad and I know I haven't seen all the shit a seasoned nurse would but to withhold meds is just horrendous IMO!

OK I just read this whole thread.

I wanted to comment on it but I didn't want to keep reiterating what was already said.

First of all, big hugs to @dorothyzbornak97 You rock, girl! My mom had kids later in life, me when she was 36 and my brother when she was 39. That girl was so fucking ignorant.

Second of all, when/if I get pregnant I don't want to find out the sex of the baby. I want it to be a surprise. I've discussed this with friends and they were all appalled like: "How can you be prepared?!" etc. etc. I just said what's wrong with buying gender neutral everything? I want to paint the nursery yellow, buy gender neutral clothes for the time being... to which I got the response: "Well if it's a girl, don't you want bows and pink and girly stuff? And blue stuff if it's a boy?" I said, yeah of course I do.... but I didn't know you couldn't go shopping for baby clothes AFTER the baby is born?!

Like seriously, wtf? There is no rule saying you can't go out and buy clothes after your child is born. So I really find nothing wrong with not having "headbands" and "football onesies" prior to the baby's arrival.

The teen thing though? That's messed up.

It is not a nurses job to determine if a patient is in pain, they treat the pain the patient is reporting, even if they are being an a-hole while reporting it.  It is shitty to make someone wait for pain meds because they are being a dick.  They can still be in pain while being a big dick about it.  I think the whole thing is jacked.
There is a difference between being "rude" to your nurse due to labor pains/contractions and just being a jerk. When I care for patients that are just plain mean and that are requesting an epidural, I make 'em wait a max of 30 minutes. I'm not withholding any medications from them. And this goes for the teens, too. We have to prep them before the epidural anyways (IV fluid bolus, etc.) and that takes time. I'd say this only less than 5% of the time. I'm not waiting for my patients to hit transition before offering them an epidural...c'mon.

Regarding VEs - I am VERY gentle when performing vag exams. I know from my personal experience with a natural birth how uncomfortable they are. Many of the male OB doctors just ram their hand up there like they are reaching for the patient's tonsils!

  • What sucks is when a patient is requesting an epidural and the anesthesiologist is in the OR performing a c-section (we only have 1 ANES on our unit). Sometimes, they may not be able to get the epidural for an hour or even a little longer until the surgery is done. THAT sucks!

  • @mamaEZsquire that's terrible! When we have patient's "labor down", I always ask for an epidural bolus. It's just a stronger dose of the epidural to keep you comfortable until the OB shows up :) I can't believe he sutured your urethra. WTH!? lol

This is exactly why I deeply distrust medical professionals. I don't know who I'm dealing with, and they get to jam random and potentially fatal things into my body.

Maybe some day my luck runs out and some crazy decides to do something nasty because they hate redheads. Or steal my drugs and give me hepititis in the process. I realize that most have a good heart and want to help, but it's stuff like this that creeps me out.

Thanks for contributing to that 'n all. Way to stick to the Hippocratic oath.

@Shannon1401 Of course I medicate my patients when they are in pain, but for the few that are jerks, waiting an extra 15 minutes (in addition to 15 minutes for IV bolus which is standard for ALL patients) is not going to kill them. I must be doing something right if patients are requesting for me to care for them during their stay. I bust my ass for my patients. You have no idea.

I don't agree with the premise of withholding drugs but I get why you would want to. I personally would not but I understand dealing with jerks. I want to add that pain can really make people act like jerks when they aren't normally. When I was in labor the nurses could have thought I was a jerk because I was too exhausted to answer their questions. I'm sure you already know this but thought I'd reiterate.
It does make me feel better knowing you're not singling out teens like it first sounded. Thanks for clarifying.

Edit: I try to believe in the goodness of humanity so to hear that someone would withhold an epidural from a teen just because they are a teen blows my mind!
No, not just teens in general. Teens being jerks.
No prob. The patients that I'm talking about that are being jerks aren't even in labor yet. They come in for elective inductions so they haven't even started contracting and they are already being rude! lol I know firsthand that true labor contractions can change one's personality, but these patients (and it isn't many of them) are just plain mean the minute they walk in the door.
