Athlete pay is determined by how much money they bring in (kinda like a CEO, IMO) does Anyone need 10 mill a year? No, but they will continue making it because eez jus capitalism. To be fair, they do play a pretty key role in creating a GIANT industry that employs tons and tons of people both directly and indirectly.. So there's that.

No one should be treated preferentially in the court room.. I can agree with you there.

ETA: obviously their pay isn't directly determined by "how much they bring in".. My point is demand is there for sports by... Us!! We dump a lot of money in and they get the big bucks. It's why I consider my dollars as votes. If I don't like something I try not to buy it.

The reason that athletes, movie stars, and rock stars make so much money is because Americans dump billions of dollars a year into leisure activities/the entertainment industry. There are also less celebrities/professional athletes than say, teachers and nurses, so the money that gets dumped into their industry is spread out less.

I agree that it's completely unnecessary for anyone in the entertainment industry to make so much money, but that's why they do.
I understand it, I just don't agree with it.

I say this but I am 100% not trying to be pretentious--I just think that my kids' daycare/preschool is closer to actual school than it is a less formal type of daycare--plus I think it's cute to think of my little ones going off to "school" like big boys :)

Earwigs are so gross. I hate them.
Not as much as I hate cockroaches but it's close.

My UO is that I think all the posts about baby size are annoying.
I hate that even babies are getting judged for how big or small they are. (Not saying everyone who has posted about baby size is doing so in judgement but I fear ultimately that's what these posts lead to.)

Nope, no judgement from me... I'm just amazed at the different sizes babies can be and think they are all soooo stinking cute!
  • I can't handle the stupid I see on FB today. This isn't really a UO or a FFC but I needed to vent soooo....

If someone is doing something completely moronic and it has the potential to lead to a very dangerous situation, don't try to play it down. Tell the person what they did was stupid (probably in a nicer way than that), explain why, and then tell them what they need to do to help keep their situation from blowing up in their face. For example, don't know anything about horses at all? Probably shouldn't buy a couple babies that have never been handled just because you have land now and they're cute! You can't learn everything from a book or off the internet and you've just put yourself at risk of ruining two horses and causing lots of heartache and headache down the road when you realize they're way too dangerous now for you to deal with because you DIDN'T KNOW WHAT YOU WERE DOING.

I hate when someone tells me I'm lucky, when talking about my life. It's basically saying I have no part of how things have turned out. I made good decisions and took advantage of the opportunities given to me. Those are the reasons I have the things I have not bc I'm lucky and they just fell from the fucking sky.

Also, I don't think two-piece bathing suits are appropriate for little girls.

Yea, completely agree. Wait until LO is older and everyone says, "Oh, she's so good. You're so lucky!" Like she's not a product of your parenting at all. My MIL does this.
I'm already mad thinking about it.

  • Ooh, I've got another one. If I have to see one more moron post something on FB about how up north, this is just a little bit of snow (we got 15 inches), I'm gonna scream. One of dh's cousins from Florida posted something really good a couple of weeks ago when they got some ice and he started seeing that stuff on FB. Basically that even though other cities and towns have the resources in place for events like that doesn't mean everyone does. After all, do you know what people from Florida would have called hurricane sandy? Rain. Also, I once read that the entire states of Virginia and Maryland (along with dc) combined have less snow plows than the city of Chicago.
Im in Seattle where a couple inches of snow shuts the whole city down. And every time every body blah blah blahs about how I'm from Minnesota and this is nothing etc My city is a collection of hills with no fucking snow plows. Maybe ship us all your plows from Minnesota and we'll be happy to live up to your standards.
    Yup!

  • I haven't done research on this, so I could be off. But don't a lot of athletes have charities? Don't they raise awareness? Frankly, I love the entertainment industry. I don't like silence. I don't want to have to sing all day to keep my house loud. I like my tv and computer. Do those people need that much money? Probably not. But please don't project your issues with Americas economy onto these athletes. Many of them have done awesome things with their money.

You are 100% correct. Many do good. I understand they (athletes, musicians, etc) are using their talents and making a living. I just get frustrated with the crazy amounts of. Money they make each year. I know it only takes a few to ruin it for all and I'm only thinking of the few bad apples that give everyone else a bad name.

To be fair, some things ARE luck and its important to acknowledge that. While I have worked hard to her where I am, I am very lucky to be born an able-bodied middle class white American. The life situation that 'fell out of the sky' made a huge impact on my life and provides a lot of privilege. (Would I be a software engineer if I wasn't born in a country with easy access to technology?)
Yea but when another able-bodied middle class American born in a country with easy access to technology tells you that you're lucky as if you're job fell out of the sky and you didn't work for it, how is that luck?

Oh I completely agree that SOME things are definitely luck but when you walk into someone's house and say, "you're so lucky"... Umm... I didn't pull the money out of my ass for this house. The realtor didn't just hand me the keys. Those are the kind of things that bug me.

Am I lucky that my LO didn't have colic too bad or that she is easy going, yes! I didn't do anything for those things. But those aren't the things I'm talking about here.

Not mutually exclusive.  I'm lucky and I've worked hard.  I think that's true of a lot of people.

Also I think tankinis are great for little girls-- much easier when going to the bathroom.  Two pieces are fine--- bikinis that looks like they should be on a grown woman are totally inappropriate.

I can get on board with a tankini. Maybe I should of specified it's a bikini I'm no okay with.

Yep, @pgermain11 Some things are just luck. Yes you made choices and it produced good results but the things that happen by luck can't be ignored.

Eh, I'm still thinking it's kind of weird. Kind of like I wouldn't think it's necessarily that strange to say you're doing homeschool activities with kids 1+, I wouldn't say I'm homeschooling Henry and Ian right now. Sure, they learn, but it's not schooling, kwim? I get that a lot of time most people are just short handing it, but it's just weird to me.

I actually have a UO this week! It's sort of Olympic related so it actually goes with other topics.

I think sports are overrated. Not Olympic sports but team based professional sports. I think it's ridiculous that these athletes are paid millions of dollars to play games. Watching the Olympics makes me really appreciate the athleticism and dedication these people have in their sport. I LOVE learning about their personal stories and admire their hard work. I just don't think someone who plays in the NBA, MLB, or NFL has their same type of dedication and yet they are paid ridiculous amounts of money and are treated as royalty and think they can get away with anything because they are a professional athlete.

I don't want this to become another post about worth=pay but seriously, does someone who plays baseball/basketball/football for a living deserve what they pay? I really don't think so and it makes me so frustrated that people who work hard to make the world a better place make far less.

This might be a P&R but I had to get my opinion out! Off to get my kiddos ready for school/daycare.

Yes! So you hit a ball, catch a football, or protect a net. You don't need to be paid millions. There are people suffering all over the world with no health care, food, or water, but we are paying $10mil + to some of these people. When I hear new contracts being signed and the money being paid out, all I think about is starving kids.
    @carrie3102

I don't have the time for it today... but seriously?  It isn't up to ANYONE ELSE (gov't excluded because they think they have the ability) to decice or scoff at how ANYONE spends their money.  Like it or don't but seriously you have no idea the sacrifice that goes into becoming a professional athlete I only played college ball and I gave up every night, weekend, 365/year from the time I was 12 until I was 18 to work at it, no dates, no parties, etc, etc, etc.  I played ball, it was my CHOICE to do so, and I got a college scholarship for it, was that too much money?  I mean all I did was throw a ball right?  8-|

I'm annoyed by how the south reacts to snow. I get that they don't have equipment for snow removal, but an inch or two of snow? Come on now. I wouldn't even shovel that amount of snow and it sure as shit wouldn't keep me from going to get a 6 pack.

As someone who grew up in buffalo and now live in TN, I have to say it is different. It is not the snow that freaks people out as much as it is the ice. We are usually on the borderline of freezing so it comes down as sleet and ice.
  • @Carrie3102 and @Utqt09 I can understand the ice being a problem. I'm talking about the dusting of snow some places get and they just lose their minds. It takes a lot for me to say I'm snowed in!

  • haha, @lancomechica, I hadn't even thought about the cost aspect of LO's "school"--you are right, if we are paying more for DC than we would if they were to attend college right now, I think we can call it school, yes? :) $1600 a month, ouch!  I thought we had it bad with $1400 (and that's just for LO, it's an additional $1000 for DS1!).  I saw the term on here the other day and I am officially adopting it to apply to my family...we are daycare-poor! :)

I think the weather wars are* silly, too. I lived in Norfolk VA (literally on the Chesapeake bay.. Like ocean was my back yard) a couple of years ago when that hurricane came up the coast. I was scared shitless..

People from there laughed at me and told me I didn't know what a storm was.. Yeah, I live an hour or so from Joplin, mo. I know what storms are.. I've just never experienced a hurricane while living on the beach lol
