GTKY: Your state/region stereotype

Re: GTKY: Your state/region stereotype

  • Vermont - We're a bunch of pot smoking hippies wearing tie dye who eat only Ben and Jerry's and maple syrup. We all have dairy farms or work at ski resorts.

(I do eat a lot of Ben and Jerry's!)
  • Loading the player...
  • Wisconsin, where we say things like "yah dehr, hey dehr, dontcha know" while drinking beer and eating cheese. These are pretty much true....meanwhile I think our culture surrounding alcohol is sad and disgusting :(
@vanityaphair -- WI will always be known as the cheese state for me, of course, but also as the place the holds the scariest tourist attraction in the Midwest.... the House on the Rock...

    I still have nightmares. :)

  • Finger Lakes, NY: we all grow our own grapes to make our own wine, spend weekends hiking all the local waterfalls, live on apple orchards, own a lake house, and everyone knows how to blow glass.

Actually, we do hike quite a bit, then consume great quantities of FLX wine that we purchased at the wineries we drove past on our way to the hiking trails. We leave the glass museum visits for the tourists, though.

And yes- I get that whole, "Oh, NY as in the city?" question too. Um, nope. Not even close.

    Mommy to R (8.23.11) and K (6.21.14).

  • Washington, DC.....we are wealthy politically involved assholes that can't drive...and have terrible sports teams. Semi-true to an extent.

  • My local region, I think people assume Vancouverites are all hippy, tree hugging, yogis. That is the case in some areas, but where I live, not so much. In my specific area, I'm in the local bible belt, so I think people assume we're all religious rednecks, which is so not the case, and that it's not very safe, which may be true in some areas...

Also, despite being in Canada, it's freaking gorgeous and warm here. No igloos here! ;)

  • Being from the US, my cousin's French wife assumed I love country music. She was totally shocked that not every American was a fan of CM.
  • I currently live in Utah and I would say the dominant stereotype is that of being Mormon and having many wives at least those were the cracks our friends kept making when we found out we were moving here. It definitely is very Mormon even in Salt Lake City where I am, but so far everyone I've met who is married only has one wife :-).

  • San Francisco, CA. Born and raised and lived there until November of last year. We've gone from a bunch of dirty hippies and queer activists to a bunch of snotty hipsters and dot commers. In reality, it's a great, eclectic mix of the two groups with some native Mexican and Asian communities mixed in. It's just too damn expensive since everyone who works at google and other huge web based companies in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area have taken all the prime real estate and made it too expensive for the natives...thus, my exile.

I love the Finger Lakes. It is just the right distance drive for DH and I to get away for a weekend. It has been a few years since we visited. We've only been for wine tasting in the past, any suggestions of things we could do if we visited again while I'm pregnant?

I love SF! It's one of my favorite cities. It is a great eclectic mix, add in all the tourists and its the best place ever to people watch, lol.

But the price to live there is absolutely crazy. I had an ex whose cousin rented a room in a house in Daly City and paid $2000! Insane.

  • Although I'm not from here, I currently live in Oregon. People assume we're all hippy tree-huggers who drive hybrid cars. While in some areas this is largely true, that stereotype only fits for a small portion of the state.

I was born in NJ...and well, I think most people think we're all like the cast of Jersey Shore. Couldn't be further from the truth!

  • @andyandrachel:
a few of the wineries have grape juice (Penguin Bay and Wagner) if you still want to tour the wineries.
Corning is a fantastic town to do things: the museum of glass is neat, and Market St is filled with a mix of unique shops and great restaurants. It's also a short drive from Watkins Glen, which has a nice hike with stunning waterfalls.
Ithaca is fun if you're looking for some great hiking, as well as restaurants to fit any appetite. Lots of organic, vegetarian, ethnic cuisine.
Several of the wineries along Seneca Lake have really nice bed & breakfasts, too. Glenora is a nice one (and they have a fantastic Riesling). Harbor Hotel in Watkins Glen is on the pricey side, but if you want a nice babymoon away, it's perfect- right at the bottom end of Seneca lake. Oh, and Belhurst Castle in Geneva is great too! Great food there, and close to the shopping outlets at Waterloo (Carter's, Nike, Yankee Candle).

We did a Fingerlakes trip a few years ago and I loved it. We did part of our trip in Seneca Falls. If you like bed and breakfasts and Victorian style mansions, there's a place called Hubbell House. The owners mentioned that they were interested in selling within a few years, so hopefully if its still open. We had a great time there and I'd love to go back. The place is gorgeous and it sits on a very small lake called Van Cleef lake. They do a very formal breakfast with different china every day. Seneca Falls has a lot of women's rights attractions and the town in Its a Wonderful Life was based on there, so they play that up. We were there at the end of our trip and sick of all the wine, so we didn't do too much drinking and had a great time.

Thanks for the tips! Last time we went, we stayed at the Finger Lakes Cabins at Mill Creek (https://www.fingerlakescabins.com). It was an excellent place to stay. You've got your own fully furnished cabin with bathroom, kitchen, living room, fire pit and picnic table. It also functions as a Bed & Breakfast so a picnic basket full of breakfast was left on our porch every morning. Since I've got food sensitivities, it is easier to prepare our own meals on trips. You've both given me hope that there is stuff we can do if we choose to get away before LO#3 arrives.
  • I'm from Maryland, born and raised. I live about 45 minutes from DC and Baltimore so I guess the stereotype would be we're rednecks which is partially true because there is a lot of farm land out this way.

    It's all true.

That's me right up front there, next to my other sister wives.

  • From Michigan: We all live in Detroit, therefore we're crackheads :-) When we're not busy with crack, we enjoy eminem, faygo, and ICP.

Current home: Kentucky. We love KFC. We all smoke cigarettes (most of the bigger cities are non-smoking), and everyone is pregnant. That last one is true...
