On the accent thing, I have lived in New England since I was 6. However, I cannot stand New England accents. Particularly in RI, my name is Dana but people add an R to the end of my name and pronounce it Daner. That's not my name!!!
I am ridiculously happy that I bought tickets to Alton Brown's Edible Inevitable tour yesterday. I know it's incredibly dorky, and I know that he annoys the hell out of some people, but I can't help myself.
I never said I was cool.
I'm going as well!!!

I'm sure you still have loads to choose from @dani+california :-)
I drove to the US and bought a cheap one there...mouahaha
If they catch you at the border do you have to pay customs on it?? (Just curious...)
katieharpiceland As long as you stay in the States for 48 hours, you can import back $800 of goods per person duty free (not including fire arms, alcohol and tobacco though). The only thing you can't import is a car seat. They will confiscate that at the border if they find it and if you're stopped and the stickers on the seats are checked to make sure it's valid in Canada you can be charged. So we get to pay twice as much for the same seats on this side of the border.

DAMN!! @Dani+California we're only allowed to bring in 100$ worth of stuff duty free :-( (And a Graco PNP costs 300$ here, LOL)
Really?! No matter how long you stay? Us it's 24 hours = $200 each and 48 hours + = $800 each. That sucks!
Actually, you can purchase electronics in the duty free store when you arrive in Iceland, and if you purchase something over 100$ they can stop you and force you to pay customs. LOL So, they attract you in and are like, hey, buy some stuff here, and then on the way out of the airport, they check your bag and get you. LOL. Not to mention, they can put your name on a list as an attempted smuggler. Its ridiculously crooked.

Nope! We stayed for the weekend so we got to bring back up to $1600 worth of goods duty-free. We also bought our stroller, car seat and all my maternity clothes in the US because they're almost half the price of what they charge here! Insane.
(BOB stroller was $275 in US and it's $550 here for example.) Stupid Canada!
It's up to you if you use it because it usually is exactly the same seat, but if you're in an accident or need to claim insurance for damage and all that your claim could be revoked because of the seat. This is one of the things that made me livid about the ridiculous cost of things in Canada when shopping for this stuff.

::holding the urge to complain more about prices here.:: Its tough!! I want to shop!! There's a 50% markup on items before they even get to the store, because of shipping and sales tax (which is 25%). So, if something is twice as expensive as it is in the states here, its a really good deal.

Supposedly a MA/RI accent is closest matched with an English one mostly because they colonised here first and such.

I've been in Western MA most of my life and the Boston accents give me a twitch. I spent close to 2 years trying to figure out what MIL was saying with certain words. The worst was she kept going on about "patents" every time we saw her and it turned out she was talking about patterns. It took seeing her sewing room to figure out she wasn't just a looney tune.
I don't hate maxi dresses. But NO ONE looks good in long skirts. All I can think when I see someone in one is they look like a duggar.
My great grandmother wouldn't be caught dead in a floor length skirt.
I have to wear long formal skirts to play in. Shorter skirts, trust me, are not a nice alternative. (mega crotch shot on stage) Would I wear them normally, no. :-) (And I mostly wear dresses, actually.)
These days, I'm using the pregnancy as an excuse to wear yoga pants for about 80 percent of my life. I know it's pretty much just laziness, but I've got no plans to stop. Yoga pants and sneakers, all the damn time.
I could make an effort to be cuter, but I don't want to.
On Southern accents: I don't think they make you sound less bitchy. I think they make people sound less smart. Also, I dislike TX, MS, LA, and AL in general.

Hmmm.. Interesting. That makes sense. I've always wanted to visit those states for that reason. So much history there.

Yeah that statement makes you sound ignorant, IMO.
This seems like a confession but from the previous posts it is going to be an UO. I really don't like IKEA. Every time we have gone there I'm totally overwhelmed, I don't like having to search the shelves for shit. A fucking bed side lamp tested the strength of our marriage because it took us an hour trying to put that damn puzzle together! It's also either really cheap shit, or super expensive there never seems to be a happy medium. It's also always sooooo busy and people push those massive carts around and they're always in the way!

Why? How do you dislike a whole state?
Maybe their public policies? Voting trends?

That makes sense. I guess I was thinking she meant all PEOPLE from those states. But I have a bit of an accent so I guess I qualify.
I hope no one takes offense to mine as they are very pointed and stem from annoyances in my own personal life. 1) Being a volunteer fireman in a small town is nothing to brag about. 2) Destination Maternity makes me want to throw up. $200 for a pair of jeans that you're only going to get about 5 months use out of? Maybe 15 if you have 3 kids and use them with each pregnancy? No ma'am.
@SLSchuerg No offense taken by your fireman comment, but wanted to comment back to ya about it. I'm a volunteer fireman and am SUPER PROUD of that fact (it's a badge of honor that I've worked REALLY HARD for). It is a hard, dirty, and oftentimes thankless job. As volunteers, we are not paid in any way and are truly there to help our community because we want to (this is all in addition to our full-time jobs!). Our town has grown considerably and we are one of the most busy all-volunteer stations in the DC/metro area. My husband (who is Chief--a major accomplishment!) and I both came from families of volunteer firemen and proudly continue that tradition. While I agree that there are duds (as in all walks of life), don't let a few bad apples or braggarts disparage your view of the volunteer fire service. We work hard and train even harder to make sure that each one of us makes it back to our families after each call. I wish more people in the community would volunteer, we're always looking for new members! With most firemen, when you join our "family" it gets in your blood and consumes you. It is our life and we can't imagine doing anything else. There's nothing like the satisfaction of helping your fellow citizen in their time of need. Hopefully I can help change your perception of volunteer firemen and restore your faith in us, we'll always be there in your time of need!

I dislike the voting trends and public policies in my own state (Texas) but there are still so many things to love and enjoy about it. I'd still never say, generally, "I dislike XX," even for states I'd consider "backwards." That's just a completely odd statement.
I'm from NY and I love southern accents. And a lot of times I find myself thinking in a southern accent. I don't know why or how, but it's a nice change of pace haha.
I do not like the Sherlock Holmes series. I only watched one full episode but I can't stand it.
You mean Elementary (USA version) or Sherlock (BBC). I seriously feel like Sherlock is the best show ever, but Elementary is terrible.

@EnFuego12 You sweet lady, I'm sorry if I seemed like I was saying that I'm faithless in volunteer firemen or don't appreciate their efforts and the work that they do! I truly didn't mean to come off that way if I did. I suppose a little bit of explaining would have helped that. My BIL is a volunteer fireman, and I think it's great of him to do that because he too has a full-time job. But there are just times when he's not as humble as I think he should be, and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth - not for all volunteers, just him. I did make a general statement though, and I now see why it sounded worse than what I meant it. I can completely understand being proud of what you've worked hard to achieve. Nothing wrong with it, but when it's to the point where you're taking credit when it's not due, then that's a little irksome. For example, my BIL posted this on his FB the other day https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BdYnolDIcAAr61X.jpg and said "Ain't that the truth" when 1) we live in Texas, so it's never been THAT cold, and 2) probably less than 30% of the calls they get are actually fires. It just seemed like he was trying to relate to someone in a situation he's never been in and probably will never be in.
I appreciate the work you do for your community so much, and I wish there were more people like you in all communities around this nation.

Well, I can say that I left my home state because I generally disliked it. The social atmosphere, general voting trends, there was nothing to do, ect but I don't hate everyone or the state, I just have no desire to go back except to get cheap booze

Aw man I can never think of anything good when they day actuicomes.
How's abooooot...I don't give a shit if someone wants to spend $1,000 on a crib, and I don't think that makes them 'stupid'. (Unless they couldn't afford it/went into debt for it.) Would *I* spend that much on a crib? Hells no. But I'm sure there are things I choose to spend my money on that others may believe is frivolous.
It wasn't that she wanted a 1k crib. It was that she was pissed her mil wouldn't buy said crib for her that invited snark.
Definitely her entitlement that was the worst and the entire way she handled the situation...although the fact that the desired crib in question was $1k was kind of the huge cherry on a shit sundae.
"Shit Sundae" wins phrase of the day for me! If it were still out first trimester, it probably would have made me vom, now it's straight up hysterical ::high 5!::
I love hearing different accents! Where I'm from (CT) we're used to NY and New England accents. When I travel down south I have a hard time understanding some people but I'm sure the feeling is mutual!
Maxi dresses would be awesome...if they actually came down to my ankles. There is no way for me to wear one at 6 feet tall and NOT look like I'm middle aged and preparing for a flood.
Also, I hate diaper bags almost as much as I hate purses. I seriously hate having to lug anything around with me and I typically only bring a small wallet, cell phone and keys in my pocket when I go out. Carrying around a giant bag full of stuff when the baby is born is causing me anxiety.

I'm actually looking forward to carrying a baby bag because I'm gonna start leaving my purse at home. I'll have a mommy section of the baby bag with my wallet and small shit that I need.
