Re: UOs, anyone?

  • Okay, so I might get flamed for this but... as some one who grew up in a very urban, low SES area; I find myself getting really annoyed with people who claim to advocate for this community but yet are so clearly out of touch with the actual needs/realities of people who live in these communities. They talk a good game and probably really do mean well but part of me is like, "Oh really? Tell me about what it was like to grow up poor."

Now let me be clear. Compared to most people where I grew up, we were fairly well off. But after going to college and entering the professional workforce, it became abundantly clear that my upbringing was very different from many of my peers.

  • I'm ready for fall and welcome it. Let the cool weather and apple picking begin!

Not washing clothes after buying them (new or used) is disgusting.

I am ready for the Fall weather too!! It seems to be coming tomorrow here!

I am very guilty of not always washing new clothes before wearing them..

My UO I'm not a fan of Bachelorette parties. I enjoy drinking a little but I do not enjoy drinking while out places because it makes me uncomfortable. I'd rather have people over to have a few drinks than go out.. (I have a bachelorette party this evening and I'm dreading it.. But I have a good excuse to leave early.. Baby needs to nurse before bed :))

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • I love Miley now that she's all fuck it.  If she wants to be an overly sexual, drug using, weirdo, then so be it.  She's just that much closer to being like me but with way more money.

You should see the video she put out for Dolly Parton's "Jolene." She has an amazing voice, and she looked super sexy in it. Her clothes were on and her tongue stayed in her mouth.

Andplusalso, I love the song "Jolene."

I don't think that's flameworthy, and is a pretty accurate description of how things like that can sometimes go.  I think it's like a lot of things: unless you've been through it, you don't fully realize and understand the true problems and whatnot.  The best advocates are often those who have the deepest "inside info" because they've lived through it/are living through it.  I'm not saying that other people can't be great advocates, because there certainly are people like that.  There are also some people that aren't really as in touch with the issues as they think, and just try to push their agenda regardless if it'll actually help or not.

I hope that's making sense.  I have a migraine and am not thinking as clearly thanks to the meds lol.

That makes complete sense and I absolutely agree.

I have also had to realize over time that sometimes I'm just too close to certain issues and can't have a rational conversation/discussion because these issues are just too personal to me and my emotions make it hard for me to discuss them without getting emotional/defensive.

I've literally had to say to friends/co-workers, "I need you to understand that you are talking about my friends and family right now and that makes it really hard for me to hear you."

    Yay for de-escalation skills!

  • I don't give too many fucks about what other people eat or feed their children unless it is seriously ridiculous like fast food 2x a day, everyday for a 10 month old. I care about what I feed my family.

This was inspired by the SAHM board. I got sucked into reading the dino nuggets and cheap meats posts.

So did I. Lots of annoying stuff going on in that one. My UO is that, I've thought about it, and I don't care about every kid getting a trophy, especially when we're talking little kids. If it makes them feel good, who cares? I don't think it's a new phenomenon either. When I was little, everyone got trophies. I'm not that old, but it was still at least twenty years ok. I played sports my whole life, deal with losing just fine, and do not see myself as a special snowflake just because we all got trophies when I played soccer as an 8 year old.

  • Has she stated she had some sort of childhood trauma @mackalien13?

No, just the overt over sexual behavior makes me concerned.
I think the fact she was Hannah Montana before makes it weird.  I saw Rhianna live when she was Miley's age.  Her performance was waaaayyy over the top sexual.  She had a cat suit on, whipping the stage, and pretending to masturbate.  But because she branded herself that way almost immediately, people just weren't as scandalized or concerned. KWIM?

  • I think car manufacturers should offer hybrid options in more vehicles than they already do.  I have nothing against cars like the Prius and all.  I'd just like to see, say, a hybrid option for a Corolla, Sienna, etc. in addition to having the already established models like the Prius.

Disclaimer: I'm a Toyota person, so that's why I only listed those models, but the same theory can apply for any model from all of the manufacturers.
    @Bostonkisses2

I think they do have a Camry hybrid. I'm too lazy to google. The thing is they don't sell as well because they're more expensive.

Confession: I tried working at a Toyota dealership years ago. I lasted a week. The hybrids did not sell. I really want one, though.

By the way, BK, I dreamed last night that you moonlighted as a professional assasin. This might deserve its own thread...but I'm...lazy this morning. So, are you a badass when you're not bumping?

I think some of it is way over the top. I think there is a difference between saying fuck it and masturbating on stage with a faux finger. And it makes me worried because of her weird sexual expressions that she underwent some sort of childhood trauma.

I mean, her dad IS Billy Ray Cyrus.  That mullet he had was totally traumatizing.

Anyway I guess my UO is I almost never wash new clothes before I wear them.  Or put them on DD.

SHe's old enough that I don't think that her sexual behavior indicates a sexual trauma. If she were 7, maybe, but a 20 year old who has access to anything she wants )and has had internet her whole life)? Not so much.

  • My UO:

I don't like the idea of buying clothing and "needs" for a kid's birthday or Christmas. At least not until they  reach the age that they are asking for a clothes & shoes. As a parent, I feel it is my job to meet his needs and that's not a present. A present is a kickass new toy or a book he will love. Not a sweater.

DH and I have not bought DS a Birthday present yet.  He gets enough stuff from his Grandparents, he doesn't need more from us.

Well Rihanna's dad used to beat her mom, and Miley's parents have had some well publicized issues, so I think this is a fair assumption.

  • My UO: Beer tastes gross. I question the taste buds of whoever created it in the first place.

On a side note, my DH drinks a beer every once in awhile, so I wanted to surprise him the other day (like, in June) with a new beer that he hadn't tried before. Samuel Adams limited edition something-something IPA. He didn't like it. Now I've had 5 bottles of beer that neither one of us is going to drink sitting in my fridge. I offered it to my BIL, but he's not interested in Sam Adams.

  • On the subject of Miley, I keep seeing these posts on Facebook about how ashamed we should be for talking about Miley because SYRIA.

And I get the importance of Syria, I do, but by these peoples' logic we should only ever talk about important issues or else we should be ashamed of ourselves.  I think that's bullshit.  I'll talk about Miley all I fucking want to, I'm pretty sure that doesn't mean I think Syria is unimportant.

I don't care if people talk about Miley, but I am sick to death of hearing about her on the news. My local news talks about her daily.

i think too many women say that they don't make enough milk as an excuse for not breastfeeding. i think it's okay to formula feed and you should just own it and say "i tried, but it wasn't for me".  formula does not equal poison or sub-par parenting.
