  • I dont think a glass of wine will hurt I think that you shoukd rule weed OUT!

  • Loading the player...
  • Actually I know someone who smoked weed to combat morning sickness throughout her pregnancy... she is fine...her daughter has CP and will likely never walk without braces on her legs. 9 mos isn't that big a sacrifice for your childs well being IMO.

  • One thing you have to look at, despite the obvious, is that there are so many couples that cannot have children...or have tried forever to get pregnant.  The fact that someone would take for granted the child inside of them by doing something as stupid and risky as this...just shows that the person should not have children.  I couldn't imagine the anger I would have knowing that people put their babies are risk while I couldn't even get pregnant...

  • Wow - lots of extreme reactions to this thread! ?Up here in Canada, I know we have a considerably more relaxed view on pot smoking (it was kinda sorta legal here for about six months recently... then the godforsaken Stephen Harper came to power and well he's an idiot).

I'm not a smoker, never tried a cigarette in my life and did try pot once, but my tongue swelled and it was just a gross experience. I am a huge wine drinker but I knew I was pregnant 5 days after conceiving ( I just 'knew') so I stopped drinking on the spot and to be honest, the MS has been so bad the thought of alcohol makes my mouth taste like vinegar.

However, I did a little bit of poking around and here is some info from a very credible source, whom you may recognize. I thought that it was interesting in the very least. ?Of course, everyone has their own comfort level ( I ate sushi today but only cooked or veggies no raw fish but I triple checked first before I ate and I read up on the web before ordering)...

I may choose to have a glass of wine or a cocktail toward the end of my pregnancy maybe even in my second trimester. I just know that right now, it's not a sacrifice to say no - it's a pleasure.

  • ARE YOU FVCKING SERIOUS??  WEED?  You are asking if it's ok to smoke weed?  Really?

"real answers only reply".   You can't control who answers this.    So you want just people who will say "YES IT"S OK" to answer this post.

    GO fvck yourself.

  • Oh, no, I won't judge you for smoking weed and hitting the Boone's Farm. More merit scholarships for my kids that way. You might want to start dealing weed to save for Junior's community college tuition, though. Or at least his GED classes, man.

  • Wow.

My answer: no to both. Not worth the risk.

And, although this will be extremely unpopular, I just read about this when I was sifting through "Panic-Free Pregnancy," and it said that smoking marijuana occasionally is ok. I fell off my chair when I read it. I would never in a million years do it, and would never in a million years trust a book to tell me it was ok, I'm just saying - someone wrote a book and said it was ok - take it for what it's worth.

Here's a link to the book on Amazon - do a search in the book for the word marijuana, and you'll find that someone else out there has asked the question. Followed by "is cocaine safe?" just for good measure.

If you're absolutely serious, ask your doctor. Please.

But more seriously, please consider the life you are bringing your child into, and the risks you are willing to take for your own few moments of pleasure.

  • Can you live with yourself if something happens to your baby because you wanted to smoke? The article below states some of the effects it has on children whose mothers smoked while they were pregnant.

    Just an fyi:

If a woman is pregnant and smokes it, will marijuana hurt the baby?

imageDoctors advise pregnant women not to use any drugs because they could harm the growing fetus. Although one animal study has linked marijuana use to loss of the fetus very early in pregnancy, two studies in humans found no association between marijuana use and early pregnancy loss. More research is necessary to fully understand the effects of marijuana use on pregnancy outcome.

Studies in children born to mothers who used marijuana have shown increased behavioral problems during infancy and preschool years. In school, these children are more likely to have problems with decision-making, memory, and the ability to remain attentive.2

Researchers are not certain whether health problems that may be caused by early exposure to marijuana will remain as the child grows into adulthood. However, since some parts of the brain continue to develop throughout adolescence, it is also possible that certain kinds of problems may appear as the child matures.

  • wow i wish i knew this post was here.
  • imageskylooo:

Does anyone have an answer that knows anything about marijuana?

Let's see, I know it's illegal... and I guess that's all I need to know, without even needing to get into the health issues of it.  This is MY brain.  This is NOT my brain (nor my unborn baby's brain) on drugs.

Waiting for some innocuous creativity... I'll let you know.
  • Are you kidding me?!   If you actually miss weed that much why are you even having this baby.  It is a HUMAN and you want to teach it that it is ok to do drugs because Mommy did them while expecting.  NICE!!!
As for wine- Hell if you are having the weed go to the whole bottle.  Why not just start doing shots now? One per day for the rest of the preg.

  • you can't be fuucking serious

I hate to see what other judgments you make on plainly common sense issues.

  • I want to give my baby the best shot possible in life, and that means not poisoning them with alcohol or drugs. I think a little self-control is in order on your end. Would you administer either of those substances directly to your infant after he/she is born?

If your answer is yes, then by all means, have a drink and a smoke.

  • I think this question is very sad.  I know of two people (NOT friends) who smoked pot during their pregnancies, and both of their children have SEVERE asthma.  Not worth it!

I will be enjoying a glass of wine on occasion (MD OK'd) but I would never smoke pot.  I love my baby too much!

Shame, shame, shame on you for trying to get approval for pot!

  • BEFORE you do anything  think about the fact that you have a beautiful baby that lives because you live and takes every breath because you take it for him/her you are giving your baby what you take .. once the baby is born would you give him/her wine or let it take a hit off a joint ?? but this may sound a little stupid but if it's "regular" weed as in nothing extra added or no fancy stuff  I think it might be ok a few times but not anymore then that.. and no wine .. this is actually a topic im struggling with my self in my pregnancy... hope it helped
  • imageChrysallys:

Honestly, I think foul judgement would be to even consider doing drugs while pregnant.

As a teacher, I've seen too many kids jacked up because their parents wouldn't give up their partying while they were pregnant. So no, I wouldn't dream of drinking any alcohol or doing any drug during any trimester. How hard is it to give up that stuff for 9 months, seriously?

    Real enough for ya?

There is a difference between an occasional glass of wine and doing hard drugs and getting wasted every night . I am sure you have seen kids affected by their mom's partying, but I am also sure mom was doing more than having a glass of wine here and there, or even smoking weed sometimes.

That being said, ask your doctor. Every doctor is different, but I think a lot of them find an occasional glass of wine ok. I am not sure about weed, but from what I have read, its harmful in the way that cigarettes are, by cutting off oxygen when its done too often.

  • I wouldnt, and I don't recommend it. I'm not sure but it just doesn't seem healthy...
  • yeah ima drink and get high. thats what all the good mothers do.

a glass of wine im sure is ok but seriously.. smoke weed? wow!

call your doctor and ask them if its ok.

  • imageAngelGirlEms:
Since 1st tri, I've drank somewhere around 1-2 bottles of wine weekly, and smoke a blunt about 2-3 times a week.  From everything I've read, it not only helps you relax but also helps your baby grow!

lmao! all the cool moms are doing it so why not!

  • Wine - possibly

Weed - NEVER, are you kidding?!   Geez...

... would anyone like to share my crack?

    It's the holidays, after all...

*sigh* and a large EYE roll.

    Christine ;)

  • As a neonatal intensive care nurse I would vote no on both. If your baby happens to come early or shows signs of withdrawal it would be placed in the neonatal ICU. We routinely test babies for drugs. If your baby comes up positive for weed....good luck taking him/her home with you!

  • current research indicates that you may have one to two glasses of wine a week, starting second trimester.

I have not taken advantage of this!

I do NOT recommend smoking weed, even though in some cultures it is recommended for increasing the appetite/decreasing nausea. A friend of mine had smoked weed a bit during her pregnancy and ended up with a very long labor.

I looked up some research and they did say THC can increase labor time/make labor more difficult.

I am a nerd and I love research, but I'm too scared to do the 2 glasses a week thing.

  • From the perspective of someone who does therapy with children with special needs, some of them with fetal alcohol, I'd say no on both.
  • My MIL smoked weed every day while she was pregnant w/ DH. Maybe that's why he's so laid back lol.

As for me, no, probably not.

In my degree in  becoming a teacher, we took lots of classes that taught us about how parents screw up their babies.  And weed?  First of all, you never know what it's laced with. Some weed has been found to be laced with cocaine.  Secondly, it slows the growth of your baby's brain... I'll let you infer what that means.

  • Stop.  You know not to smoke marijuana when pregnant.  Go away.

  • Skylooo, check out this video. Melanie Dreher, RN, PhD, FAAN explains her cannabis and pregnancy research study in Jamaica. Pregnant women and their children were studied for over ten plus years, both marijuana smokers and non-smokers were included in the study. One of the first scientific studies of the effects that cannabis may have on pregnancy and the child's development thereafter.

  • Funny.

I'll give you a serious response, though.

I have never smoked weed, and well, since it's illegal in this country and you are having a baby, I would hope that you wouldn't want to risk your baby's welfare.

As for wine, well, I'll be honest, I have partaken in a half glass here and there in my 2nd trimester.  I used to be a huge wine drinker.  Loved it.  But, as they told me (and I didn't believe it), pregnancy greatly reduced my love for it.  I just don't want it, and my tolerance for it is 0.

Now I am in the third, and my tolerance is even lower.  I can't have one sip without feeling like I am going to be ill.  Plus the baby kicks up a storm if I have any alcohol, as if she is telling me that she can't stand it.  So, I haven't touched it in about two months.

I do miss it greatly though.  Just the idea of having wine with a meal.  The whole experience.  I can't wait until I can have it again.  Which will be a while.

  • Seriously?

  • Did you know that FAS can be caused at any point during a pg and docs have no clue when that is or how much you need to drink to cause it. Drinking can harm your babies brain development and other organs.  He will be more likely  to have trouble learning and paying attention and can have behavior problems when he gets older! Did you also know that they now suspect that ADA or ADHD could be linked to smoking pot while pg. Are you willing to risk the mental abilities of your child?

I work in the field of early childhood and it is so sad to me to see these wonderful little children having to be placed on behavior plans, have allergies, physcially disabilities and all the other things just because their mother couldnt keep themselves clean for 9 months.

I really think you are asking these questions just to be annoying. I really hope your not thinking this is funny or cute to do. The moms that are on here are here to love and care for there unborn children not to be provoked and stressed out. Stress can harm an unborn child, it slows the blood flow to the baby cutting down the nutrients and oxygen which hurts the babies brain and can cause problems later in life.

If you are trying to stress these women out on purpose I really think you are being mentaly abusive!

  • I don't know where you read that information but that has to be the craziest thing i have ever heard, did the crazy doctor tell you that was o.k. because he needs help if he did.
  • you know i was reading what these other women had to say and i think that it was pretty rude for them to judge! when you asked them not to......

i have read that an occasional glass of wine can help your baby's immune system in the 3rd tri. i have never liked the tast of wine but i do plan on having a glass atleast once during my 3rd tri.

and about smoking weed.... i dont find anything wrong with it but when you are pregnant i havent heard or read anything good about it but when your baby has an ear infection it is good to blow a bit of smoke in to thier ear....

    good luck

  • When I was preg. with my son I told my husband that i would have a glass of wine every Saturday in hopes of it relaxing me and bringing on labor.  I was soo afraid of going into over time with the preg. I knew it woudl kill me... but when it came down to it I did EVERYTHING else but drink the wine...I just kept thinking that if ANYTHING wasn't perfect with the baby that I would totally convice myself that it was becasue of the wine...or whatever....I just wanted to know that I did everything possible to have a healthy baby!  I did and he is...now for #2

Having an occasional glass of wine?  What about smoking weed?  Just wondering, I know people that choose too.

P.S. Please don't clog up the thread with foul judgement, I am asking a serious question and am an adult and do not need to be lectured.  Real answers only reply!

Who are you to say who can reply and who cannot?  You are a dumb** and should not even be pregnant.  Would you let your baby smoke weed?  Would you let him/her drink alcohol?  SERIOUSLY?!  You have to ask these questions?!  Why are you even pregnant - you are obviously not an adult and have no self-control.  For he!! sake, it's only 10 months and you cannot put your baby's health before your own?  You make me SICK!  People like you should not even be allowed to have children you low-life piece of scum on the bottom of my toilet bowl!!!!!Angry

  • I am pretty sure that marijuana stays in your system for at LEAST a week. Definitely NOT something you'd want to do.

A glass of wine every now & then shouldn't hurt. My DH prefers that I don't drink AT ALL ... so I haven't had a sip. But having a healthy baby is certainly worth missing out on a few cocktails.

  • This is by far the worst question ever asked on thebump!! EVER! Indifferent
  • this has to be mud but I can't understand how anyone would drink any booze while pg.  No one knows how much it takes to affect the baby.  IMO its awful

  • I honestly don't know how weed would affect your baby physically, but I do know that if any mandated reported discovered this fact or someone suspected that you might be smoking weed and reported you to the Department of Family and Children Services, you will surely have a DFCS case on your hands. Which means DFCS workers will come visit you and piss test you at least once a month, if not more. Your child/children will likely be taken from you and you will have a caseplan to follow that will include abstaining from drugs, substance abuse treatment (most last at least 17 weeks), parenting classes, and pretty much jumping when your DFCS worker says jump. Weed is a natural plant that grows in the ground, I can't say that it's right or wrong to smoke it; however, it IS an illegal drug, and if the state discovers this, your children are likely to be taken from you, at least for a short time. So the true question is, are you willing to sacrifice precious moments with your child to get high?
