Do you know how to say Isla?

I have this feeling that most people would say Is-la, instead of Eye-la, and wonder if we would be setting up a child for disaster with that name. My name is always mispronounced and it is so irritating, I swore I would never do that to a child of mine!

Well just think of this way, how people pronounce Illinois. Most people do pronounce the S with it & it is supposed to be silent.
So I think any person would possibly call this child Is-la. It has the S and most people will probably not know it is silent.
Isla is my number 1 girl name, but I am having second thoughts about it because people will mispronounce it.
I am assuming your name is Andrea. So is mine and people say it so many ways, but none of it really bothers me. But messing up a beautiful name like Isla to Izla...makes a huge difference to me.
I do. There are people out there who could mess up any name. I wouldn't worry about it because once you say the name once you don't have to worry about it.
One time at a gymnastics meet someone was announcing the names for awards and kept saying "shuh-LESS-lee". It took us about 15 minutes to figure out she was trying to pronounce Chelsea. Who would think someone didn't recognize the name Chelsea?
DH and I loved this name and we went through different spellings just to avoid the dreaded "is-la." We considered

I have a friend who named her baby Isla and at first I wasn't sure how to pronounce it.
Now, it is one of my favorite names! I know someone else named Ayla- have you thought about that?
In my head it is iss-lah.

Since I took Spanish and Italian, I'd pronounce it "EAS (as in east without the T) - LA"
I've never heard of this name pronounced Eye-la. The S is silent? What's the nationality of the name? (is it Irish or something?)

I would have said "Is-la". I would have had no way of knowing the "s" is silent.

I think that might depend on the demographics of where you live. Here in Nor Cal it would be pronounced correctly. Those who won't pronounce it correctly are the same ones that still say "tortilllla".

I never knew that Isla Fischer pronounced her name like that. I've always said it "is-la" (like island in spanish).
The more I say it in my head, the prettier eye-la sounds.

This makes no sense. Eeesla is not the correct pronunciation.
Maybe I am the odd one out, but I only see this as "eye-la". My cousin has a daughter named Ila (pronounced eye-la). It may be easier to spell it that way.
"EEE"sla IS a correct pronuncation. It is a spanish word. I teach in California and there are a large number of hispanic students. The long E was immediately how I thought to pronounce it. I am not saying you're wrong, because "eye" is a correct pronuncation as well, but the Spanish pronunciation is not wrong.
I didn't know there was a Spanish name spelled the same way, but pronounced differently. I guess that makes sense. My name is Carolina in Mexico, but that's definitely not what it is here. I think of Isla as an English or Irish name.

I looove the name Isla! At first I was pronouncing it "Eesla" but I was pretty sure from the get-go I was pronouncing it wrong. I just read recently an article about Isla Fisher and not only found out how to say it, but the story behind it.
I think the problem when she is younger will be her meeting people and them spelling it incorrectly.
As she gets older, more people will be reading it and saying it wrong.
However - the thing about it is, I'll never forget how to say or spell this name now :-) It's a unique (for now) name that is not weird or would get weird reactions from children. I say - go for it!

No.. I think the only people that would pronounce it correctly will be people that did a lot of baby name research. I go back and forth thinking is it Is-la, and I am reasonably educated and travelled a bit. I think of Isabelle, and that is Is-a-bell. Would you pronounce Isabelle like Eye-la-belle? If it was spelled like Ayla, I would probably pronounce it correctly, but probably only because I knew an Ayelette.

I am so confused by your post. The correct pronounciation of the name is Eye-la, even spelled Isla. Whether you would say it or not is irrelevant, and the whole point of my post is to get a feeling as to whether or not people instinctively would say Is-la, Ees-la or Eye-la. I wouldn't spell it Ayla, people would then say A-la, not Eye-la.
No. Even though I intellectually know how to pronounce it from bein gon here, I still pronounce it "Is-la" in my head when I read it.
