The whole situation makes me angry and frustrated. We also have US citizens there. Keeping this place open makes us no better then the countries we call evil for using torture. We are hypocrites to keep it open.

I believe that all people accused of a crime, regardless of age, deserve a fair and speedy trial. If convicted, they deserve the minimum humane treatment guaranteed by international treaty. I believe that torture of any human being is a disgrace and shows grave disrespect to the Americans who have died in defense of our Constitution and the American way of life.

Is it just, for you, that clear? So what about people defending themselves against invasions by blowing up US tankers? Those are terrorists too? does it all come down to just being against the US? Have we decided, that clearly, that you are right and others are wrong?

Yes, I would. What part of the whole capture, torture, brainwashing, and psychologically breaking of CHILDREN is unclear? The acts children commit while under that sort if duress isn't something I can hold a mere child completely accountable for.

Of course I don't agree with torturing children or holding people without just cause. But when it comes to my safety, and the safety of my family it is very clear to me. And there is a huge difference between defending against an invasion and walking into a crowded market with the intent of blowing up innocent people. I don't agree or think that America should condone the policies (or lack there of) at Gitmo, but I don't think that closing it is the answer. What exactly are we supposed to do with the 14 year old non terrorist who was at a terrorist training camp? Give him back to his parents so they can pat him on the back and send him back out to achieve his goal of reaching his holy land? I don't want these people in the United States. I don't want them in any position where they can plan something that will hurt Americans.

Policies, procedure, treatment ect needs to be worked on, but I don't think closing Gitmo is the answer.

Those children are done for anyway. They're brainwashed and cannot be fixed. Like pp said, I bet you'd change your mind if one were to blow your kid up at a mall somewhere. I would also like to know who, besides Murtha, would be willing to take terrorists into his or her district's prisons. These people shouldn't be tortured, but because of 9/11 and their desire to kill US I don't think they should have the same rights as the americans they want to kill. That's sick.

So, the children currently being imprisoned without benefit of basic human rights personally are responsible for killing thousands of innocent people and therefore deserve to be murdered? Call me naive, but I find it hard to believe that these particular children had anything to do with what happened on 9/11. But it's okay to torture them for what others did? Riiight...

This is probably the most disturbing thing I've ever read on here and I daresay that anyone who says a child deserves to be tortured for the crimes of others has probably been brainwashed and is beyond being fixed. ?

I'm a bit late to this argument but as I understand it- the detainees are going to be put into American prisons? Would they be put into protection because I believe they might possibly be in more danger in our prisons than they would in GITMO. Our prison system isn't exactly known to be a puppies and rainbows environment concerning violence.

So what you're proposing instead is that we let these animals keep their rights to a fair trial just like any American citizen? They are not human anymore. Their sole perpose in life is to murder as many people as possible before killing themselves. You and your family could be those people if some judge doesn't find enough evidence to convict them. There are no checks and balances when you send accused- not convicted, but accused- people to an island outside the jurisdiction of American, or even international, laws. I don't think anyone should be tortured in part because frankly, a person in fear of their life will tell you exactly what they think you want to hear. It's not exactly reliable intelligence, and after 8 years in prison, I doubt these people are really in the loop on current terrorist plots. If they ever were. Which I don't know because they are innocent until proven guilty and we haven't bothered, in eight years, to give them a fair trial.

If we say we stand for democracy, freedom, and justice, and then fail to show any of these traits to our enemies, why should they do anything but hate us?

I do agree that it should be regulated. However, as far as I understand they are planning to release them.
