CIO for naps?

Has CIO for naps worked for anyone? Nighttime is easy, and we have put DS down awake since he was born. Naps are total opposite, and it takes a good 15-30 minutes of rocking for him to be totally asleep and then sometimes I can sneak out, but usually he will hear me and wake up and then I have to go rock him for another 5-10 minutes and this can go on for quite a while. DS naps 3x a day and I'm OVER this.

So this morning after rocking DS, he was quietly crying/fussing so I thought I'd see if he could put himself to sleep. I let him CIO for 10 minutes and when I went back in his crying had turned to screams and he was kicking and pounding his fists and covered in sweat. Poor baby :(. I ended up rocking him to sleep.

Does Ferber have a chapter on naps? Any other suggestions, for books or otherwise?  thanks.

Re: CIO for naps?

  • We had to do CIO for naps and they are still a struggle.  She doesn't scream (which is nice) but she'll fuss in her crib for a good 20 minutes before she finally goes to sleep.

When she was really little I got her in the habit of falling asleep with a bottle or while nursing.  Naps weren't a problem until I decided that we needed to break that habit.

  • We are following Ferber for nighttime and naps also. Nighttime is easier and naps are more challenging. I do a modified routine (sleepsack, 1 book, rocking and a couple of lullabies) then into bed. He usually only cries for 5 minutes or less, but sometimes more. ?Ferber says to abort the nap if they cry for 30 minutes and we only had to do that once on the first day. ?From what I hear, naps can take a really long time to sort out. ?I'm just trying to be consistent.

  • It's so funny that you post this now, because the mouse JUST fell asleep after crying/fussing for a good 5 minutes in his crib. Like you, nighttimes don't seem to be an issue, but it's a challenge sometimes to get him to take a nap. I wouldn't say we use CIO - but we definitely know when it's time for him to take a nap (even if he doesn't know it) and will let him fuss a little bit in his crib.

  • I am anxious to hear the answer to this. She is finally STTN (I just quickly knocked on wood). but naps are still a struggle.  DH and I agreed that we would deal with nights first and then naps, I think it is finally time.
  • We have been doing Ferber for her nighttime sleep, which is working great, and we were going to tackle naps later. I've been putting her down when she starts to fuss, though, and she has been falling asleep on her own in the crib within ten minutes. No crying, just talking to herself. I feed her beforehand, change her, and then put her into bed. She hates being rocked, so I skip that. Yesterday she took a two hour afternoon nap and she is in the middle of a morning nap right now - she's been asleep for an hour. I think what really helped was finding the 'window of opportunity' for her sleep. She starts getting cranky around 9:30, so I feed, change and put her into bed, and she's asleep by 10. In the afternoon, she starts getting cranky around 1, so we do the same thing and she goes down at 1:30.
  • We did a few days of Ferber but DD got a bad cold and we had to stop.  Like you, her nighttime was great but naps were impossible. She'd cry 30 minutes almost every time, so I pretty much gave up and started rocking her again.  She's still sick right now and taking like 5 naps a day. I've rocked her to sleep every time... martinis are my friend! Good luck. Sorry for not having any advice. I'm useless!
