Re: GREAT BIG questions thread

  • Anyone in here trying for a VBAC?
  • Loading the player...
  • @gravcass I am trying for a VBAC. I had an emergency c section at 31 weeks with my son. I haven’t had my first appointment yet though so I’m not sure if they’ll let me do it
  • I think I'll be trying for a VBAC!
  • Mine will be a vba2c. There is a podcast I listen to called the Vbac link. So imformative!!!
  • I'll have to listen! I'm a little worried because they aren't sure of the reason my first wouldn't come out, and I also had mild preeclampsia so I'm worried that'll be a risk factor again. Also I didn't wait the full 18 months they suggested between birth and pregnancy (more like 16ish months-so, close), so that scares me a little too.
  • Mine is about 16 months as well! These two blogs go over it and the pre-eclampsia one gives birth story podcast links with it.

  • I need help😭 my husband is dead set on a Nordic name which I'm cool with and I've given leniency for him to choose because I chose our last sons name. His choice...

    TYR (pronounced tear)

I'm not a fan at all and haven't been able to present anything he likes. Any suggestions on something Nordic?

I like the Nordic names: Anders, Gunnar, Ari, Steffen, Vali, Hagan, Bodin, Loki, Odin
  • Ohhhhh I love Anders!!!
  • These are great suggestions!
  • @ajeff1121 with my first, I had an unmedicated, no intervention birth in a birth center with a doula and I am working to do the same with my second as well. Especially being a first time mom, having a doula was amazing. She met with my husband and I a couple times before the birth and made sure to get us talking about all the things I might not have thought about. Even though it was a bit of discussing what a medicated birth or a transfer for a C-section would look like, it honestly gave me more confidence in my body’s ability to birth the baby and it gave me the peace of mind knowing we had already talked about (and written down) my wishes in those situations if I weren’t able to verbalize them at the time. If you have any specific questions that I can try to answer about my experience, feel free to ask!
  • @ajeff1121 I did an unmedicated birth for my first and absolutely had a wonderful experience and also plan on doing it for my second. I used hypnobirthing for my birth method and it worked really well.  I also had a doula, and having secondary support was definitely helpful! This time I’m going to give birth with a midwife group and skip the doula but feel very comfortable with the situation!

There are so many benefits/ reduced risks to going unmedicated and I would encourage you to start practicing/ prepping as soon as you’re comfortable! In hypnobirthing it’s all about removing fear and learning to go into yourself to relax and let every contraction do its job and I did meditations/ affirmations on and off for about 12 weeks and I’m starting earlier this time.  You can totally do it!
  • @ajeff1121 my two previous births were mostly unmedicated and my plan is to do the same. I haven't had a doula before but I felt pretty confident with just DH and I.

With my first, my water broke before labor at 38w5d and after 12 hours with no labor progression whatsoever I was started on pitocin, so not totally unmedicated - but I did not have an epidural. I took several different birth classes that were offered by my hospital and also had some online course so I felt very prepared. Everything went really well despite my sadness at having to have the pitocin. I didn't think I'd be able to handle it without pain meds, but I did it.

With my second, it was 5 years later and I didn't brush up nearly enough on my natural birthing techniques. He came fast, was sunny side up for a time, and was over 9 pounds...so while the birth was unmedicated, I didn't feel as good about it. I felt a bit out of control and I didn't handle the pain as well as I did with my first. It was a good thing it went so fast!

My plan this time (7 years later!) is to be more prepared, more meditation practice/destressing techniques, and do more classes like I did with my first both online and in person if I can find them (seems to be harder to come by these days). Our hospital has a birthing center inside of it and I plan to ask if that is something open to those in the practice I am with. I've considered changing to a midwife, but I actually really like the doctors in my current practice and the one I am seeing most regularly delivered both my kids so I like the familiarity.

  • This is my plan for baby #3. My first 2 were unmedicated hospital births and I loved each experience so much. I felt so empowered by my hypnobirthing course and had great providers that were familiar with it. I didn’t have a doula for either but think it is such a great idea, especially for the first time. I couldn’t have one the first time because of covid then 2nd we just didn’t. Best of luck to you!

knottie852841ff25b5426b thank you all so much! This is very helpful (and makes me feel good about the direction I’m going). I have a hypnobirthing class in queue. Will probably get to it by the weekend
  • I think planning an unmedicated birth in a hospital is a great idea! I planned an unmedicated birth with my first, too. I hired a doula and went deep into hypnotbirthing, meditated and did yoga everyday, learned some mantras, etc. My birth didn't end up being anything like I planned though because of several complications one after another, so I'm really thankful I was in a hospital in the end. It would've been much more stressful imo to have to transfer to a hospital at the point it was an emergency.
  • @ajeff1121 I had planned unmedicated for both my births, but unfortunately had c-sections for both. One was because I hit 42+ 1 and my heart was telling me something wasn't right (cord was around her neck three times and the doctor thought that may have kept her from decending and starting labor). Next baby I hit 41+4/5 and baby had a spot of decels at my non stress test. Again, my heart felt something was off sonwe dod a c-section that night. Turns out I had a small placental abruption.
All this to say, as women we are very intuitive. Listen to what your body is telling you and what birth you think is right for you. I HIGHLY recommend the v-bac link podcast. It's focused on vaginally births after cesarean but has SOOO much info on natural births, interventions, informed consent, what women wished they had known the first time, and evidence based birth.
I think a doula is an amazing idea. I had one for both and while I didn't get to use her in the way I thought, she was there throughout my c-sections, taking photos and being there for my partner and family.
  • Has anyone been in a bump group that migrated to Facebook or a different app that's more private? My April 23 group moved over to Facebook, and I still talk to most of the moms daily. I'd love to do that with this group eventually if anyone is interested.
  • @mcmanda4321 yes! My J18 & S20 groups went to a private bump BMB around 20 weeks and then made the jump to private Facebook groups around 35 weeks and I still interact with them regularly. My J22 group just jumped straight to discord at 20 weeks. I highly recommend it. I feel like folks are a little more at ease once we know rando’s and lurkers don’t have access to our conversations.
  • My first bump group did. I personally don't interact as much as I would like and go through spurts where I just don't get on Facebook for my own mental health.
  • @gintrash @gravcass maybe we could try discord so you didn't feel like you have to get on Facebook to participate? I've never used discord, but if be willing to try it!
  • @mcmanda4321ive never used it but am not apposed!!!
  • Seperate question.. for all previous c-section mamas... are any of you experiencing 2nd trimester cramping. I've had 4 seperate occasions where cramping has taken the wind out of me and sent me scurrying for the restroom. I'm gonna bring it up at my next appointment but wanted to see if anyone else has these experiences.
  • I’d be open to trying a discord group too. I know the group with my firstborn moved to a Facebook group but I didn’t end up joining because I hadn’t been that active in the group and was also trying to limit my social media time.
  • @gravcass I've noticed some cramping too, but I wouldn't say they're strong enough to take the wind out of me. Just brief moments of being uncomfortable and then it passes
  • Have never used discord but open to it as well!
  • Raspberry leaf tea… I’m finding conflicting information and not enough research to support any claim. Has anybody tried it before 36 weeks just to drink & strengthen uterus? I read that 1 cup per day per trimester is safe. But then I also read to avoid before 36 weeks…

@ajeff1121 I drank red raspberry leaf tea with my first. I believe I drank it for a few days early on in my third trimester (probably right around 28 weeks). I was told by my midwife to be extra mindful of if I got any contractions so when I noticed a few right after starting, my midwife recommended holding off and trying again later just to be safe. I started again at about 34 weeks and didn’t have any issues at that time so I continued drinking it through birth. I started both drinking the red raspberry leaf tea and eating dates at the same time.

I was planning to do the same this time around. Since I’ve only had one kid and did it that one time, I’m not too sure if there were actually benefits for me but I was happy with how my labor progressed so I figure I should try to do the same things again to see if I can get a similar labor progression.
  • @rlindqui16 thank you!! I go back to the midwife the week of Christmas so I think I’ll be patient and just ask the recommendation then. I’m not too worried, I could just stop drinking it if I’m feeling contractions but there’s really not good research on it. I’m also planning to try dates!
  • @ajeff11 I also did dates and raspberry leaf tea, started third trimester with one cup then moved up to 3-4 cups per day. I will absolutely be doing it again.  I do think it helped my pregnancy (hydration, fiber, etc.) but I also had a super quick second stage of labor (22min total) and my uterus shrunk super fast postpartum which was nice, made me feel back to normal faster. Every pregnancy is different but if I can have something similar to that again it’s worth it!
  • Yes! I’m going to try for this at a birth center. Check out popthatmumma ig account. She has amazing tips
  • @cuveema12-23 thank you! Wow 22 minutes second stage!!!!
  • BABY REGISTRIES!

I am coming up on 20w's and with the December holidays, will be seeing family this week that either I haven't seen in a while or last time I saw them in person was before we announced. All this has brought me to realize I should start building out our baby registry, Would love to hear any and all feedback and recommendations on how to approach this/favourite products/your plans/preferred check lists that you referenced/etc.
  • I made a whole 7 page document about my registry if you would like to message me an email address? I made it for a friend and have been sharing it with a lot of people since then and people say it's helpful lol

Yes Please! I'll dm you an email! Thank you!!!
  • I drink it all through pregnancy with all my pregnancies and birth with no issue. As long as you aren’t at risk of pre term labor it’s totally fine and safe to drink all through I only drink 1 cup in 1st and most of 2nd trimester then by 3rd I up it to 2-3cups
  • Thank you so much for the information, This will help me.
