Prenatal Vitamins

I would like to start taking prenatal vitamins soon so when we TTC I will already have some of the vitamins in my system. This may be a stupid question but is there a specific type? brand (specific or store)? can it be over the counter or should I get a perscription? I don't want to make a silly mistake by taking the wrong vitamins. I see my doctor at the end of the month for my yearly checkup, didn't know if I should just wait for her or I can just go ahead get something. Last year she mentioned a brand (I brought up the topic of babies because I was getting married) but I cannot put my finger on it right now but it sounded familiar as if I have seen it on the shelves while in the store.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • Any nutrition you can build up before baby is so helpful! You should check with your ob to see if one is suggested! You may be lacking certain nutrients that just one specifically wont help.

  • balanced diet during pregnancy can lower the incidence of many birth abnormalities and is connected to optimal brain development and healthy birth weight. There is folate in beans, green and leafy vegetables, and orange juice. Also, a balanced diet will lower your risk of anemia and other unpleasant pregnancy side effects including exhaustion and morning sickness.
  • Yes, it's true, you have to eat good, and meals have to be balanced

There are a variety of over-the-counter prenatal vitamins available that can be a great option to start taking before trying to conceive. Some reputable brands include Nature Made, Olly, and Ritual. The key things to look for are that the prenatal vitamin contains folic acid (at least 600-800 mcg), as well as important nutrients like iron, calcium, and DHA. Many drugstores and grocery stores carry these types of prenatal supplements, so you can likely find a suitable option without needing a prescription. However, it's always a good idea to discuss with your doctor at your upcoming appointment to get their recommendation on the specific brand or formulation that would be best for your individual needs. Starting prenatal vitamins a few months before trying to conceive can help ensure you have the proper nutrients in your system when you do become pregnant. Let me know if you have any other questions!
  • I just try to eat a balanced nutritious diet in order to take less medicine. It includes 3 cups of vegetables, 2 cups of mixed fruit, meat, grains and dairy products(2 eggs, 1.5 cups of milk and yogurt). With this, I also take prenatal vitamins by v1dal0cIty. It contains DHA, folic acid, iron, fish oils, thiamine, choline, it has no aftertaste and is doing great so far. I also prefer to walk for 30 mins rather than exercise.
  • Thank you all for the information, I was also interested in this very question
