Babies: 6 - 9 Months

I was a Judgy McJudgerson

So I was talking to my co-worker who has a DD 1 month older than LO. She was asking about BFing, and was astonished that I was still BFing *eyeroll*

We were talking about solids, and she said that her DD "sometimes eats things she's not supposed to" to which I responded "what do you mean? how can an 8mo old eat anything that isn't given to them?" The co-worker said that when she picks up her DD from the babysitter, she is sometimes eating pizza and french fries from McDonalds. I of course asked why she allows this, and she said "well, the baby gets mad when I take it away" Indifferent I'm confused, aren't you the mom?

She also started putting rice cereal in her DD's bottles at 3 weeks- not for reflux, but "to help her sleep more". I know they don't call infants obese, but her LO is obese. She's a 25lb 8mo old (25lbs is 50th %ile for a 20 month old, btw- she's off the charts for weight, and on the 25th %ile for length), who's mobility is limited by her chunkiness. I feel so bad for this baby that her mom won't put her foot down. She just takes a "well, what can I do" attitude with regards to her baby sitter, and I suspect she feeds her kid some of that crap herself as well.

Re: I was a Judgy McJudgerson

  • Wow - I would be judging, too.  That is just so sad.

  • Maybe she just gives her small "tastes" of the pizza or french fries? Hopefully very, very, very small ones... But hey! Plenty of parents don't even feed their kids.

  • Hey, thanks. I have a 24 lb 9 month old. She doesn't eat junk, and she just happens to be big. She is not "obese.". I would be very careful throwing that word around when speaking of a baby under one. Many infants also trim down quite a bit once they do become mobile, which by the way every infant has a range. 8 months is still on the early side of crawling, cruising, walking, etc. Also, infant weight has very little to do with your adult weight. I was off the charts until age 2, and from teenage years beyond have been stick thin. Does this mom need to be more careful about food choices? Yes.

Uh, yeah... I agree with you. I was with you up until this point OP. I do think it's ridiculous to feed a baby that little junk food. But DS has eaten no more than 30 oz of formula a day and has just started on avocado as his first solid and weighs 21 lbs as of 2 days ago. He has always been in the 90th percentile for weight and has dropped to the 50th percentile for length. I guess I should cut back on those bottles to stop him from chunking up.

If your child is eating healthy food and and appropriate amount of BM and/or formula, and they are off the charts, then that is the norm for them, and I know that infant's weights can vary greatly. Your child is healthy and thriving. This girl feeds her infant junk food regularly- that is unhealthy, and the weight thing is one indicator of that- I doubt her kid would weigh that much if eating organic purees and fresh fruits and veggies.

I am in no way criticizing obese people, I am obese for crying out loud. I am criticizing her parenting choices and refusal to stand up to her babysitter. It is detrimental to her kid. Not as detrimental as say, not feeding her DD at all, but it is still detrimental.

And I am more apt to judge those who judge me. Is it right? Probably not. Is it normal? Heck yeah.

ETA: I in no way meant to offend those whose children are higher percentiles for weight (DD is 75th, with her height in the 50th, so not "textbook proportional") that can be perfectly normal depending on diet and genetics.  I was specifically criticizing my co-worker.

  • Hey, at least the OP is admitting she was judgy. We all do it at some point. The mom in question doesn't sound like a perfect one, but really- who is??  Hopefully the chunky monkey is healthy and thins out once mobile.  Personally, I love me a nice fat baby!  Stick out tongue

  • I would judge based on the rice cereal thing for sure, and I'd probably judge on what seems like a regular occurence of giving the baby junk food. But that being said, my DS is 24 lbs and 3 days away from being 9 months old and he is not obese. He eats 28 oz of formula a day, and the solids he eats are healthy and mostly organic. So while I agree with you on some things, I don't think you can judge the baby by her weight.

  • From what I've read, babies can't really be obese.  That being said, I don't feed my baby deep fried food, and I'm hesitant to ever make that introduction.  Pizza, though?  She's young for it now, but there is no way I could keep my favorite food from her in the future!

  • I think we all judge other people and thats normal, especially when we are defensive when someone judges us.

  • My LO is 22 lbs 6 ozs and is over 27" long at 7 mo and he isn't obese - he is just a solid boy.  He got the good genes from both sides of the family.

I personally don't agree with feeding an 8 month old pizza and french fries, that is something that they can get the taste for later in life.  I definately would put my foot down if I saw someone in my family feeding my LO something I didn't want them to have.

This. I agree with judging about the rice cereal and McDonald's, but you can't judge based on weight. DS was 21 pounds at only four months and he eats the same amount as any baby his age, confirmed by our pedi. There are a lit of big babies and by no means are they "obese".

  • Though I don't agree with having those foods all the time I am sure she is not the only one that has given their 8 or 9 month old french fries (I don't see the big deal with pizza - I am assuming I guess that it was plain??)

25 pounds at 8 months is not abnormal. I can't recall what DS#1 was at 8 months but he was 21 pounds at 6 months and far from chubby.

I think there's a difference between a child who is just naturally chubby and someone creating a chubby baby with junk food.

  • So sad for the child where do these people get such twisted ideas from.
  • Uhm, wow. Sure, it may be judging, but I think it's completely understandable and warranted in this instance!

My seven month old is 21.6 lbs. ::shrug::: She eats homemade organic purees and what I would consider a reasonable amount of formula, given that it is her primary source of nutrition. She's just a bruiser.

The cereal in the bottle thing is ignorant, but then, a lot of people are ignorant of new theories and just do what "has always been done." Giving cereal or solids to help with sleep used to be the norm, regardless of reflux.

Same w. the BFing comment, although she shouldn't be giving you a hard time about that, anymore than you should be giving her a hard time about her choices for her child. I wouldn't blame you if you told her to back off on that front, not at all. It's none of her business.

The pizza and french fries...I wouldn't give them to my kid. But we're not talking about MY kid. We're talking about HER kid. There are just so many other things that people do that put their kids in real danger, I have a hard time getting worked up over this kind of stuff.

Like PP said, at least she's feeding her kid. If she wasn't feeding the child, then I would judge.

    Yes

Didn't you just have a post where you were annoyed that a fast food worker thought you were feeding your baby junk food?

  • My baby is 22 lbs at 7 months... She's EBF and we have barely started solids. Not obese, thanks.
