Now that we know we're having a girl, we're moving full steam ahead with names. I never could warm to my husband's favorite name (Vanessa), and he shot down my favorite (Marina). However, we both kind of like Carla, and the more we think about it the more we like it. For the sake of thoroughness, I still feel somewhat obligated to pore through thousands of names just in case I find something we like more, but then I'm like, if the shoe fits, why not? It meets our criteria of working in English and Spanish (easy to say/spell, not obviously exotic/not-from-here) and my criteria of being simple (no double names, not too many syllables, not too frilly) and not common but not out there either.

Not sure about middle name. I'd love to honor one of our moms, sisters, or grandmothers, but nothing goes well with Carla. My husband suggested Carla Simona last night, and I feel neutral about it, so again ... why not? I realize it sounds like the Spanish version of Carly Simon (husband's never heard of her), but I don't see that as a negative association at all or even a strong one. Honestly, I doubt my siblings (all in their 30s) even know who she is. However, my husband's last name ends in an A, so I have to decide if I'm OK with three names in a row ending in that "uh" sound (almost all girl names in Spanish do) or think of a different name. It's not important to me that the middle name work in Spanish.

We both like Rebecca too, so maybe for a future daughter.

@heytallmama Thisbe?! Wow. That's certainly original!

  • @missmuisq we picked the first name off my list for our first daughter and never even looked at anything else. I say there's no need to sift through other names if you found one you like.
  • @missmuisq Fwiw Carla Simona doesn’t track as “Carly Simon” to me- and I know who that is lol

I feel somewhat similar in the if the shoe fits bit- why not roll with what we know we like? Husband is actually team explore-all-names.
  • @heytallmama Thanks! OK, that's it. I'm officially done worrying about that.

We decided we're going to use it and going to share it with family well before baby's here. We still haven't bought anything, but it feels good to at least have this decision behind us.
  • I need help! Currently pregnant with first child, a girl. We have 2 names we like and can't decide between. Both are decently popular (in the top 30 of baby names) but I don't really care about that so much. The middle name is set. So it's either Nora Ann or Lillian ("Lily") Ann. Last name is a simple 4 letter name that starts with R. I'm trying to pick a name that will be cute for a child but also be a "business card" name for when she's an adult. For some reason, Nora fits that better for me than Lillian. But he likes Lillian/Lily better because it seems softer and more approachable.
  • @shellby117_ I really don’t like Lillian pared with Ann for a middle name because it sounds redundant. For that reason I would pick Nora. If you want to stick with Lillian I think a different middle name would be better. Both first names are great and I don’t think one sounds more “approachable” over the other.
  • @shellby117_ I totally get you on the business card name (we joke about how it will sound plastered to a fancy office door at a big law firm). That’s what we used as one of our metrics for baby naming at least for first name. I’d go for Nora in that case - it’s modern, it works for a kid and adult, easy to spell/pronounce. Lillian is a bit more of a vintage/grown up name to me just based on the Lillians’ that I know personally. I agree above though that Lillian already kind of has the word Ann in it so not sure how that sounds with the middle name Ann (just practice it out loud a bunch) but would be super cute if you just with Lily. Lily Ann sounds a lot like Lillian.
  • @missmuisq I love Carla Simona! Simona is one of my first name choices.
  • @shellby117_ So I may be a little biased but defo vote for Nora. That's my mom's name. She's kind and approachable, so no worries about it being a softer name.

We are thinking Freddie for our little boy but don't have a middle name yet. Husband works in insurance and sees so many names he hates or knows too many people he dislikes with some names. He even shot down Frederick cause it sounded pretentious. Freddie it is. He can always shorten it to Fred when he's 40. Lol. Now the middle name challenge begins. I want Alan after my late father's middle name but it might be too old sounding for husband.
  • So far we like Addison Marie. One of my pregnant friends said to practice saying the baby’s name, and it has definitely helped.😂
  • @shorty-sar Also practice yelling it 😂
  • @heytallmama Yup, she recommended that too 😂
  • @shorty-sar we practiced our name out loud a million times but then we went to order those little wall letters yesterday and we both were like “wait is that how you spell Peter?” Like ten times. Lol. I think it had to do with all uppercase letters or how sick we’ve been the past few weeks.
  • Parker Jo or Parker Jolene is the top name right now. We also have Taylor and Raegan in the mix. But were 90% firm on Parker.
  • I think we've decided on Brady Nathaniel. Same initials as big brother! I'm not super set on the middle name but hubs is so 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ I'll give.

  • hey everyone!! My husband and I finally have some time off with our crazy work schedule and picked out the names of the twins!
  • Okay question:
Our kids names are Amelia Jean, Perrin Daniel and this baby were planning to name Evelyn Juliana.

So all the first names are characters from some nerdy favorite (tv show, book series, movie) and then middles are family names. Jean is my mom, Daniel is his dad, Juliana is my great grandmother. Is it weird we skipped my MIL’s name? It’s Linda and I don’t love that name…
  • @TortugaAzul I think an easy out is that Linda doesn’t flow with Evelyn well at all. Also, you have already honored FIL so it’s not like you are awkwardly avoiding names from that side of the family.

My mom was very disappointed I didn’t give my daughter my middle name (which is also hers) until I pointed out how awfully it flowed with our last name (an annoyance I now have since taking my husband’s name). I explained she may never change her last name and I couldn’t commit her to that. It was partly true, the other part was that I just loved the middle name we chose so much more.

I am presently stuck on middle names. I hope it’s a boy because I feel like we will have more options H and I both like rather than the girl options I’ve floated that he hates. 😑
  • @TortugaAzul Perrin from Wheel of time??

I agree with @Wishilivedinflorida that Kinda doesn't flow as much and it could be a good excuse.
  • Need opinions on our boy name. I’m pretty sure FN would be Oliver (popular, I know, but we have loved it a while and it’s not overused in our parts). Son #1 has H’s first name as his middle, so I’m thinking potential son #2 could have his middle as his middle, too. Does Oliver Aaron sound ok? I’m slightly weirded out by the double vowel starting sounds. Last name starts with a consonant, though.
  • I think Oliver Aaron sounds nice!
  • Ditto! I like Oliver Aaron!
  • @Wishilivedinflorida Oliver was our 2nd choice with our first son! (Couldn’t use it this time due to a difficult student in my class 🤣) but Oliver Aaron is cute!

we decided on Sonny William 💙
  • @Wishilivedinflorida that’s so cute! Aaron is one of my favorite boy names but it rhymes with our last name so we couldn’t use it.
  • @excitedforpiscesbaby awe that sounds like it will be a great name! I can't wait to hear what it is!!
  • We also picked a name but aren't sharing it yet.

We decided we would tell family if they asked and my parents happened to ask at our Christmas dinner so it's all out on my side. my mom of course had to comment on her middle name because it's from a horror movie. She started to say in her disapproval voice "ummm, I don't think" I cut her off and said that we love the name and it's decided. This is one of the reasons why we didn't tell anyone our daughters name until she was born.

We took my mom out for breakfast her birthday and she brought it up. She said she hopes I wasn't mad and she needs to keep her mouth shut. I was surprised she actually acknowledged that she's one of those people that just puts her opinion in everyone's business.
  • @miss_lynn9 yes! I was reading the series when I found out we were pregnant and Perrin was my favorite character. It just seemed to fit. We had zero other name ideas for him so I was glad he did end up being a boy!
  • @TortugaAzul I love it, it's definitely a unique name but not weird lol. Matt is my favorite in the books, I'm curious where his character is going to go in the show.
  • @miss_lynn9 Mat is definitely a close second! I am looking forward to seeing how the show plays out.
  • @miss_lynn9 @TortugaAzul I just started the book series after watching the show and loving it. Perrin is the best!!! I heard that the actor who plays Matt isn’t returning to the show next season and they’re replacing him with a new actor. I’m curious how they’ll address that.
  • @disneybaby23 oh you’ll love it! A couple books in the middle get a little slow but it’s definitely one of my favorite series I’ve ever read.
  • @TortugaAzul I'm on book 6... Been on it for about 6 months Because I'm struggling through the slow but I hear it does get better.
  • I think 5&6 were the slow ones but maybe it was 6&7 I can’t remember what any plots of books were but it does pick back up!
