Hi! I’m 38 and will be 39 next month. This is my second baby. I had my first one at 34. Very nauseous this time around and on Diceglis finally which is so helping! I plan on the Nipt and an amnio just bc of age to be safe. Miscarriage rates are so low for amnio. I can’t recommend Expecting Better enough Emily Oster goes through all this in her book. The NY Times has an article on NIPT and it’s worth the read.
I love reading these. When I was 16 my parents told me they were pregnant and it was literally the most shocking thing ever. My mom was 48, 49 at birth. He is now a 15 year old high schooler! Her pregnancy went as smoothly and healthy as it did for her pregnancies in her 20s 😆 it DOES happen. He wasn’t born with any health concerns and is a typical teenager. When he was born, we were: newborn, 16, 27, & 28 years old. All from the same 2 parents..just a wild gap
That's exactly what I thought. I love Father of The Bride part 1 and 2. So good. Every time I work out during my pregnancy I picture Franc saying "Little tim soldier Happy tin soldier." Haha
I am 38 ( turning 39 this Oct) and I'm expecting my 3rd ( our girls are 12 and 11) in October. We weren't trying either.. so this was a shock to us as well... We say at least once to eachother daily .. are we crazy for doing this all over again? Hahah
As crazy as we feel.. we are pretty excited and our girls are excited as well! Congrats to you all!!
So I'm not quite as *advanced*, but I'll be almost 39 when my baby comes, if all goes as I hope. And this will be my first biological child. I became pregnant in 2020, but it ended in a late term miscarriage. My husband and i have been together 12 years and have done nothing in that tine to prevent pregnancy, so I figured it just wasn't in the cards for us, and we came to peace with that.
Although I've never given birth to a baby, I was blessed with 3 amazing step sons. They were 7, 3, and 6 months when DH and I first moved in together. I went from only taking care of myself, to a full family literally overnight, and I couldn't have loved that more.
So fast forward to now, and the boys will be 19, 15, and 12 when this babe arrives. I can't figure out when to tell them. The youngest still asks me questions about my miscarriage, and it's been 2 years, so I'm worried about telling them in case something happens.
Sorry for the ramble, but I get it girl. When my period never came this time, I honestly thought it was perimenopause starting, since my mom and sister both started at my age. Never did I think have sex ONCE in January, at our ages, would result in pregnancy. I know it's naive.
I think all of our kids will be shocked initially and then learn to embrace it. I really just don't know how to tell them.
I'm send you lots of love and prayers, you got this mama. You're clearly meant to have this wee one, especially since nature wasn't on your side.
I hope your pregnancy processes exactly as you hope, and best of luck!
I am 13 weeks today. I had the nipt q-natal test done at 10 weeks 3 days. It all came back good and we found out we are having a boy. We told our kids a couple weeks ago and I got a cookie cake from the bakery and had them write "mom is pregnant", they took it well. Some of them had an idea something was up because I had been sick. I have an appointment Thursday and an ultrasound. I can't wait to see the little guy and hear the heartbeat. I am starting to have days that I don't feel nasuea but I am still tired by 6pm every day lol. My belly is definitely getting harder to disguise.
How is everyone doing? Any new tests or ultrasounds? I don't have a visit till May 5th which seems so far away. My Dr scheduled me every 5 weeks which is surprising to me when is everyone else going? I woke up last night and couldn't fall back to sleep for 2 hours. I just laid there worrying if everything is okay because I haven't started to feel anything yet, and still have not really heard his heartbeat (I've seen it at 6 weeks and 13 week scans). Is anyone else feeling anxious between visits?
@kelly_mom_mimi I'm an absolute wreck between visits. I go every four weeks even though I'm AMA with a history of frequent recurring miscarriages. I was going every two weeks early on. I'm going again next week, then three weeks after, and then I'll have my MFM anatomy scan.
Hi ladies!! Excited to see so many other 'advanced age' ladies here! I have an 18 month old son who was born when I was 40, and I will be 42 when we meet our new little monster. However, this is an IVF pregnancy, so my eggs are only 38!! Still AMA, but it's only the incubator that has aged.
Hi all. I am 37 and will be 38 when my daughter is born. Due Oct. 4th. I have an almost 10 year old son so I am excited to grow our family. This will be my boyfriends 1st. I have a friend who had her 1st just before her 40th bday and she’s gonna start on #2 next month. My boyfriend and I plan on having one more together when our lil girl is close to 1. My son is so excited as he’s been asking to be a brother for years. My doctor said my age isn’t old for this and that he has a patient who is 50. Women are having kids later in life now so I feel this is actually more the norm nowadays.
Late to this party. I’m 35, and will be 36 when baby arrives. I’m due 10/25, but will driver by 10/18 due to history of gestational hypertension. This will be my 4th child. I have a 5.5yo, 4yo and 2yo. I got my NIPT results back a week or so ago, and am having a 3rd and final boy. Everything looks good so far. I had a SCH (no bleeding) at my 8week appointment, but it had mostly resolved by the time I went to my 12week appointment last week.
I’m going every 4 weeks, and am doing my anatomy scan at 18 weeks with MFM. I’ll get growth scans every few weeks after that, because my oldest was IUGR, and we didn’t know until he was born at 38 weeks (induced for gestational hypertension) and was only 4lbs 17” long. He’s a healthy boy, but still on the smaller side, so my doctor doesn’t like to take any chances.
It’s been so exciting to read all of the experiences in this thread! Congrats to everyone!
I'm late to the party too. At 35 (will be 36 at delivery), I'm also not that advanced in age, but still considered geriatric😬. I'm due Oct 8. This will be our 4th (and FINAL) baby. Siblings will be 10, 9, and 2 when baby arrives. Our toddler was our "oops, I guess we should have been more careful" baby... this baby is our "but we used a condom and had sex once in January" baby! VERY unexpected, and it actually took me awhile to come to terms with being pregnant again; I haven't 100% come to terms with the fact that I will deliver and have a newborn again in less than 6 months! I had the first trimester screening bloodwork and nuchal translucency scan, it was all normal. Hubby is booked in for a vasectomy in May, lol!!
@kelly_mom_mimi I see my OB once a month and a Perinatologist once a month since I have an autoimmune disorder called ITP. They have me stagger the appointments so I have ultrasounds done every 2 weeks.
@mamajen1329 - This is really encouraging. I’m 42, and my DH is 4 years older than me. One of my biggest worries is not being around long enough to have a full life with the little one. I’m a first time mom but have wanted this for a long time. Due 10/22!
I can’t help but think that if I were 28 rather than 38 this would all be much easier physically! There is a discrepancy between our biology and our actual lives for me. At 28 I made like half the salary I make now, was with my partner but we weren’t married, had zero savings, felt like buying a house was a potential lifelong impossibility, and lived in an apartment with a roommate - I live in NYC where housing costs have always been super high but I work in a field that doesn’t pay super high generally speaking. My husband and I are so much better equipped financially and emotionally now to be parents than we were in our 20’s but also my joints are starting to feel stiff when I work too long of hours and my lower back already hurts a lot of them time pre-pregnancy!
@magic_lentil I had my first baby at 27 and it was so so so much easier on my body. I'm 36 and pregnant with baby number four. I already have bad hips. They are prone to dislocation the more weight I put on. But pregnancy at this age is hard. I'm sore in ways I didn't experience in prior pregnancies. I'm more easily exhausted. I am just absolutely wiped.
First time mom here at 38. Not of fan of the term geriatric pregnancy at all. Thanks for stating advanced maternal age. A couple of recent news stories show large increase in pregnancies for 35-39 age range.
Has anyone's OB mentioned testing for Gestational Diabetes early? I've had some friends that are AMA say they had to do it twice. I did have GD my last two pregnancies but I'm fine right now. I keep tabs on my blood sugars. I want to ask about the fresh test instead of the nasty glucola.
@krysnicole1022 mine didn’t mention doing early, just at 28 weeks. I didn’t have GD with my previous pregnancy and no other “complications or risks” other than officially being 35.
@krysnicole1022 I had GD with my son and was told they're not going to test early (28 weeks). I thought I'd just randomly test my blood at home but I forgot how to do it and managed to wreck my meter 🤦♀️
@krysnicole1022 I have HG and 35 (I'll be 36 when baby gets here). My OB had me tested for GD at 15 weeks then I'll be tested again later. I didn't know it was an early test until I was getting the test and they asked...blah. I really like my OB and honestly do any/every test she recommends.
Hello Mama's! I was told I had the gd test between 24-28 weeks.
I had my 20 week detailed anatomy scan yesterday with maternal fetal medicine group and then my consult with the specialist after. Baby is absolutely perfect and healthy. He is "above average size" at 15oz and is measuring 21 weeks. I was so relieved after the visit. The specialist went over all the "risks" which I have avoided googling and reading on so far. But the only thing he advised was to start a baby aspirin since due to age preeclampsia is a danger. My bp is always low though 106/64 yesterday. My next appointment is w my regular ob June 7th.
I guess it just depends on your doctor. My friend and her friend who are AMA had to do it more than once but my doctor hasn't mentioned it even though I have a history. We don't go to the same doctors.
I got tested early for GD but I also have a higher BMI, a strong family history of type 2 diabetes and my mom had GD, so I expected it. Failed the one hour by 1 point so had to go back for the three hour which I passed with all low numbers. I had some big feelings about taking the test (why didn’t I spend more time on my health BEFORE getting pregnant??? Have I already failed at motherhood before it’s really started??? Blah blah blah) but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. Phlebotomists were all great and one was very upfront about having failed her glucose test the year before and made me feel confident that no matter the result I could handle it and still have an enjoyable, low-stress, healthy pregnancy. I still try to eat a diabetes friendly diet, just to be safe. I’ll get tested again in the 3rd trimester.
I asked my OB last week at an appointment about when I'd get tested this time because I had GD with my son. My initial appointment had been with a different doctor because my OB had covid, and when she looked at my file she said normally the test is between 24 and 28 weeks, but with people who had GD before she likes to do an additional test earlier to rule out full on diabetes. So here I am sitting in my car after drinking my sugar water waiting for my blood to get drawn! haha
Don't look at it as failing. You can't fail something you didn't study for. It's literally your body being like "nah girl, can't handle all the extra carbs over here. " It's okay. I cried my eyes out when I got diagnosed with my second assuming I did something wrong. I didn't do anything wrong. There is no family history. I'm a size 4. I had literally zero risk factors and bam! My sister and mom who have a higher BMI were both fine and never had any issue. Knowing it might become something to worry about in the third trimester allows you to start making small changes now. GD is a little different to manage than full blown diabetes and it really is manageable with diet and exercise. It's not fun by any stretch of the imagination but it can help keep any extra weight gain in check. I'm more than happy to talk to you if it becomes an issue later on.
@mia80 I'm not even going to mention it because I don't want to drink that junk right now. If it comes up I'm just going to pass. I'm monitoring my blood sugar anyway plus I know EXACTLY when it kicks in. My whole body reacts differently to everything. So I'm just going to eat strawberries by the pound because in 9 weeks I'm going to be unable to eat them.
@mia80 Oh I'm mixing the two. 🤣🤣 I can still eat half a cup of chocolate ice cream occasionally with the GD but I can't eat a single strawberry without my blood sugar skyrocketing. My husband is trying to lose some weight and I'm always asking him to make me sundaes he can't eat. 🤣
I am 39 considered AMA. I have 5 daughters ranging from 20 years old to 20 months old. (20, 18, 16, 12, 20 months) I'm pregnant with number 6 currently EDD 10/02/22. My oldest baby has a 2 year old and a 3 month old baby girl. I feel what you're going thru. People give me weird looks or they get confused. But I'm just surrounded by my little loves!!!!! The only thing I disliked was how much extra they poke and prod at you. And I hate the words "geriatric pregnancy". It's no fun to hear lol. It's amazing to think your body can do it again after all of these years, but let me tell you it's a little harder than being pregnant when you're 20. Best of luck to you sister. We got this!
Re: Anyone of "advanced age"??
Congrats to you all!!
