Anyone of "advanced age"??

Hi, this is my first post. I am 9 weeks 6 days as of today and due 10/4. I had my betas checked for 2 weeks to watch the numbers rise. I had my first scan the first of Feb and a sac was visible, a week later there was a heart beat of 122 at 6 weeks 3 days. I had a positive at home test a week before I turned 46 years old 😱. To say I was shocked is an understatement as we definitely were not trying and considering our age didn't think it would happen after 1 time lol. We have 3 grown kids 27,22,21. We have a 4 year old grandson and my oldest and his wife announced a few weeks ago they are expecting their first get this..... Oct 3rd.
I am still trying to get used to the idea this is real, aside from constant nausea, bloated, sore and elarged breasts reminding me daily 😁.
I have my q-natal test this Friday and another visit and ultrasound the end of the month.
Is anyone else considered "advanced maternal age*?
We haven't told many not even our kids yet.

  • I'm 36. I'm technically AMA according to my doctor. This will be my fourth baby. My others are 8,5, and almost 4. I'm due 10/18.

  • @kelly_mom_mimi I just wanted to say congratulations and that's an amazing story! And SO special that your grandchild would be born right around the same time as your new baby. I can't wait for you to tell your kids...let us know what they say  :D
  • I’m 38 and will be 39 when the baby is born! I was 33-34 with my last baby so I’m curious to see how things will be different this time. So far my RE hasn’t made a big deal about it at all.
  • Hi! I’m 37 and will be 38 when the baby is born! We had our daughter at 32.
  • I had four miscarriages between September and January. I'm incredibly fortunate that my new OB understands my anxiety and has me coming in for ultrasounds every two weeks. I just turned 36 but for the women in my family reproducing I'm ancient. I'm the only one who has had kids after age 30! I'm incredibly nervous because I had another doctor (I fired her) tell me that I should just go get IVF because I probably have bad eggs. My anxiety is through the roof. I told two of my friends. I had an ultrasound last week at 6 weeks and 6 days and everything was measuring exactly on schedule for now and the heartbeat was very strong.
Anyone else considering getting the DNA test for gender early? I did it with my second and third. Not sure about it this time. Since it's my last for sure I might just want to wait until 20 weeks.

I’m advanced age myself. I’ll be 39 in a week and a half, and this will be our first child.
  • You ladies are giving me hope! I always wanted a big family, but thought between my age and my PCOS I'd be lucky to get pregnant at all. I'm 10w1d with my very first (also 10/4 EDD), and I'll turn 37 on 10/26. I hope I’m able to give this little gummybear a sibling or two. Congratulations, ladies!

I’m 38 and will be within weeks of 39 when the baby is born.  This is our first my husband and I are both super cautious when it comes to making big decisions but finally we decided that if want to have kids we needed To stop thinking about it and just go for it, we’ll probably never feel totally “prepared”.  My two younger sisters have both had issues conceiving so part of me worried that after agonizing over whether/when to have kids, we might not even have the option at all.  We were super lucky and got pregnant on the 2nd cycle.  Reading the statistics as far as all the different complications that have higher rates the older you are, it’s hard not to worry.  So glad someone started this thread!
  • Yes! I'm 42, will be 43 when the baby is born. We went through IVF, so it was planned - we'd been focused on our marriage and careers, and only realized that kids were something we wanted in the last couple of years. So glad to see some "older" moms-to-be out there!
  • I am glad to see all of us in here. I have to say I am still in shock and feel like I have already passed so many hurtles that I am not going to focus on the long list of possible more hurtles, pregnancy has so many potential hurtles as it is.  I do know I am definitely more exhausted this time around already hoping that and the nausea eases as the 2nd trimester nears closer.

It looks like a couple of us have the same due date 😁 how exciting!!!

Does anyone have any visits coming up soon? I have my genetics test on Friday and will go ahead and find out the gender.

Have a healthy and happy day everyone!!
  • I’m “advanced maternal age.” I’m 37 and will be 38 when this baby is born. This is my third though, my first was at 32, second at 35. I was treated as AMA for my second and they just recommended genetic testing and didn’t let me go past my due date. I agree: please don’t call me “geriatric” hahaha. I think for me this is it so I’m trying to enjoy all the weirdness of pregnancy. We are not planning on another, but I guess never say never after reading this thread! ;)
  • @krysnicole1022 I found out gender early at 12 weeks with genetic testing for my first two kids. It was kind of weird to learn the gender via a voicemail and a lab report. 😂

This time we decided to wait and be team green. It is nice to know but I am also excited to just find out day of.

Side note: I also ended up with so much gender specific stuff from family that I like the idea of not knowing so things are more neutral and can be used with multiple kids. That said I still dress my son in pink hand me downs (coat, boots, pajamas - no way I’m buying that more than once if I don’t have to).
  • My first US is the 17th. It’s been a long wait! But excited to get some concrete information soon.

I plan to also be team green. I like the mystery and would much rather be gifted gender natural stuff. That way, regardless of how my kid decides to present their gender as the progress through life, they’ll always have baby pics they can feel a connection too. 💚
  • @mamajen1329 "your babies will have a great life and time with you ❤ "

This is actually a fear I have, especially since we 3 adult children, that this one will not get the best of me and my husband and won't get long enough with us as there parents if that makes sense.

Congratulations to you and you so.

    Congratulations to all beautiful mama's.
I am 41 and 9 weeks today with my second.
My son is 16 will be 17 by the time baby comes. Suffered through second fertility for 16 years. I couldn't believe it when I saw a positive test. Hoping all will be ok and I will have a healthy baby. My husband and son are beyond excited. We have not shared this news with anyone yet.
I just read one of your posts and was wondering how things were going for you. Very glad to see that things are well. Congrats to you!
  • Congrats to everyone! Thanks for sharing your stories. I am 39 and will be 39 almost 40 when I have this peanut. It is my first and I’m excited but scared as all heck.. all I think about is high risk it’s paralyzing to be honest. I feel blessed to have been given this gift and I want to make sure I do all I can to have a healthy baby.. any advise on how to not stress out so much I’m open to it all.. we are all blessed and I hope everyone a beautiful day..
  • Thank you. When it happens after so long you are scared everyday. I had two scans so far baby had a strong heart beat both times. Had slight spotting that really scared me. I have my first appt next week. Living one day at a time. I am grateful for this blessing but very scared. Definitely a different experience from my first.
  • Just wanted to share this link since a couple of you still have “knottie” usernames!

I have two girls and a boy already so I have every possible thing I could need either way.
I asked my husband's opinion and he was just like "we need to know but when doesn't matter." I might ask the doctor to write it down and put it in an envelope like we did with our second. We waited until later to open it after it proved that the baby would not cooperate during an ultrasound.
My daughter suffers from extreme and debilitating anxiety, like so bad she can barely handle birthdays and Christmas so she would need to know anyway. She does not like surprises.
  • I will be 37 when our baby is born. Our kids will be 14 and 10 when they get their little sibling. I’m actually loving the age gap.
  • @mlkelly716   My step kids will be 12 and 13 and I think it’s going to be perfect. ♥️
  • @mlkelly716 @rin_dancing built in babysitters!!
  • For those of you with big age differences, I was 10 almost 11 when my brother was born and I think it was fine! I was also a built in babysitter :) I was thrilled to pieces when he came along too.
  • What is everyone’s testing plan?  I’m going in for my 2nd dr visit this morning and am at precisely 10 weeks today.  I definitely plan on requesting cell-free dna testing but then am torn on CVS vs amnio.  I like that CVS can be done earlier (like now); but amnio tests for more things.  I don’t know that I want to do both since both have a very slight risk of inducing miscarriage.
  • @magic_lentil I’m planning to do the NIPT and I don’t plan on doing anything else unless that would come back high risk. I haven’t really heard of those other tests being done just for being AMA? Did your doctor recommend them?
  • @magic_lentil the NIPT factors maternal age into the odds it gives you, so that can be a helpful indicator to get more testing if your risk is flagged as high
  • I had the nipt q-natal done last week at 10 weeks 4 days. My doctor said they don't recommend the cvs or amnio unless something comes back at higher risk in the blood test. I go again on the 31st for an ultrasound and visit. She did say I will see a high-risk doctor for my 20 week anatomy scan and will return to her unless I am at a risk for something.
  • Thanks for the responses!  I had the blood drawn for the NIPT scan and then I think we’ll wait to see how that comes back before doing anything invasive.  I have the nuchal translucency test in two weeks but my dr said it’s taking 2-3 weeks to get results from NIPT scan right now so we may or may not have the results before the NT.  I’m also struggling with pretty severe anemia so looking forward to getting the test results on the vitamin panel to start to see what’s causing it.

Same I'm 38 now turning 39 next week, with a soon to be 7yr old. My due date is october 20! Super nervous since my daughter was a 23 weeker.
  • I just turned 35 about a month ago, so technically considered AMA. I definitely have way more anxiety this time around than I did with my 8 y/o.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @Aycul18 I turned 36 in January. I'm so anxious about absolutely everything. I wasn't like this with my 8 year old or my almost 4 year old. They throw so much scary stuff at you after 35. I was like this with my five year old but she was a threatened miscarriage so that's why.
