Current pregnancy - First BFP on 1/4/22. Due date 9/13/22.
Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.
YA’LL. I just found out infant daycare near me is going to be $2500 per month. 🤯 and infant care goes until a year?! I knew it would be expensive but $2500?!!! Praying my mom can come nanny. We could LITERALLY get her her own apartment for less than the cost of daycare
Holy smokes - I thought I had it bad ($15,000 a year roughly) and it’s a 20 min drive from work and home so definitely not the most expensive place in the area!! I feel like housing prices being super ultra inflated, the cost of childcare being the same - it can’t be sustainable right? Like I didn’t even get a raise this year so, something’s gotta give??? Ahhh it’s crazy!! Now I’m going to have 2 to pay for (which I knew was coming!) but that’s going to be creeping up on 40% of my salary! But I need my job for the benefits. Wish I could spend more time with my kids. My mom was a SAHM and mh’s only worked 4 hours 2 days a week.
@mk2022x how about a live-in au pair with infant care experience? That would be freaking cheaper at that point. What on earth is wrong with this country!
@foreveronyourside ughhh I completely agree! There’s no way this is sustainable. Im blessed that hubs and I both make good money but not to the level that we’re like, “oh $2500, totally doable” haha😅 I always wanted to be a SAHM but we don’t want to lose my income. Especially living here!
@pangolindrome right! My mom is a saint and is basically retired so I’m hoping if I play my cards right, we can get her to nanny for a while to kill as much time as we can. I mean, can she really pass up the opportunity to spend that much time with her first grandson? We could let her live in our 3rd bedroom and pay her $1k PLUS food and still save $1000 over paying daycare haha. I can’t wrap my head around it.
Lol a family friend said we never need worry about clothes for this kid. We will have a steady supply of Patagonia and Oshkosh from them. I am so excited for how great our proverbial village is.
@mk2022x And still most daycare teachers only get paid minimum wage. In WA anyways, the ratio of teachers to infants is 1:4 which is also crazy. Hopefully that daycare is paying their infant teachers a liveable wage which explains the high cost! My sister had an in home daycare for a while and I think she charged $60/day for infants which is roughly $1500 a month.
I'm so thankful for our in home daycare. At times I think she's got too many kids at once, but we wouldn't be able to afford daycare at that cost. We will likely pay less than that for 2 kids full time and 1 kid for half days on Fridays. We looked at a private nanny before we found this in home place because the centers around here were too expensive and required us to pay over the summer when we're not even in the state to utilize their services.
Lol a family friend said we never need worry about clothes for this kid. We will have a steady supply of Patagonia and Oshkosh from them. I am so excited for how great our proverbial village is.
OshKosh has some of the cutest stuff! And the quality is really good. That's awesome you'll have it all handed down!
@mk2022x Being a SAHM was the hardest decision for me. It's something I always wanted, but now I see how incredibly difficult it is. Working is hard, being home is hard.
I don't know why I'm sharing this. I think I just want to make you feel more comfortable about the decision you're making to keep working. I ask myself several times a week if I want to go back to work because I don't use my brain the way I always did before. The grass is greener and all that...
There's really not a great answer to this big question, unfortunately. --- I can't even imagine having to pay that much for care! Around here one of the better centers near me is about $1200 for full time, and is probably the route I would go if I ever went back to work. I understand that good care can be expensive, but my goodness, how difficult to pay that every month just to be able to work outside the home.
Right now we pay $205/month for twice a week care at 3 hours each day at the local Lutheran preschool. It seems that those associated with churches tend to cost less, but I know that's not everyone's cup of tea. It's nice to have a couple hours to myself twice a week, but I'm already wondering how the summer will go once the school year is over. 🤔
So wildbird slings is having a big end of season sale. I wanted a sling for my second but never bit the bullet because of the cost. I just bought one for this baby at 45% off (first thing I've bought for baby and first time I've made a baby purchase so early in a pregnancy) and I'm excited to try it out. The weight limit is 35lbs so I don't think I can get #2 in it she's either over 35 lbs already or close to it.
Anyone thinking of buying one it's a great deal on a good brand.
@jhysmath I know a baby-wearing mama who loves that brand and a couple other brands. I bought a Poppit with my last pregnancy on her recommendation and I just couldn't get the hang of it with my daughter. I'm pretty sure it was a personal issue, so I'll try it again this time around.
@trapperkeeper87 I am super excited, it was the brand I was looking into for the longest time but couldn't bite the bullet due to cost and already having 2 moby wraps and an ergo. I wanted something that was faster to use and it looked that way to me, but I know there's a learning curve and I wasn't sure if I wanted to learn. I bought a used woven wrap that is likely one size too small so I couldn't get it on quickly when my second was now too large for moby wrap but I wanted something more snuggly than the ergo. I'm hoping this will work well and maybe I'll get smaller and have a smaller baby and be able to use the woven wrap this time too.
If anyone is interested in a quick to put on, stylish, lightweight, breathable and comfortable carrier, check out Happy Baby Carriers. I love mine. I haven't tried woven wraps but I had one that was a jersey material and it was always either too tight or too loose.
Well… not handed down because they don’t have kids. They just said they’re buying it for us forever. We’ve triggered some babycraziness over here.
I’ve caught up on all my grading except the dual-credit English class… and I’d rather just not. I literally didn’t grade a single assignment in all of MARCH due to exhaustion. Seriously. This is completely unprecedented for me.
Around here, daycare is also about $2500/month. Crazyness! Apparently Massachusetts has the second-highest daycare costs in the country. And let's hope we can even get a spot for when we need it. We're having to join a bunch of waitlists (which also costs money, of course). This kid owes me!! hehe....
@bigworldlittleg I feel like you could easily get a nanny or a few babysitters for that cost. With all the colleges in your area you could have a good team of ECE students caring for your baby.
Apparently, I’m a masochist. I looked up a weight gain by week chart. Considering my terrible eating habits, I was pretty stoked this morning when I realized I’d only gained 9 lbs so far. I am 1.5 lbs more than I should be for this week though based on height and pre pregnancy weight. Y’all save yourself the aggravation- do not Google this!! Lol
Kind of random/kind of rant - at work, I'm in a group of 6 other women. 3 of them are very vocal about not wanting kids (totally support this). But often when my pregnancy comes up, it eventually turns into the 3 of them going on and on about how glad they are that they'll never have kids - it's too expensive, too stressful to raise children, having kids can be tough on your career, etc. I agree with a lot of what they're saying and I know they don't mean any harm (I get along very well with all of them). But when you're pregnant for the first time....just don't want to hear it!
@laj0217 I had my appointment last Tuesday and was stoked to see I only gained 3 pounds (I was up 13 by that time last pregnancy), and then I proceeded to gain 3 more pounds by Saturday. 😵💫 But as of today, I'm back down and have only gained 1 pound this past week so 4 pounds total (no idea why, but I think part of it is that I was constipated and stress eating; I was not trying to lose weight). Watching the scale is so stressful, but very important for me to be realistic. I'm seriously hoping I can keep the gain to a reasonable level this time because all that extra weight was brutal on my body.
@bigworldlittleg I get the frustration!! I totally respect people not having kids but they should also be mindful of what they say to people that DO want kids. Respect goes both ways.
It reminds me of when I told my coworkers I got engaged (I’m not a flaunt it kind of person so it was a subtle HEY look we’re engaged!) and two of them were like yay congrats but shortly after went on and on how getting married is just a piece of paper and they’d never do it and are happy not getting married to their long term boyfriends etc etc. I was like ya no problem guys, do what makes you happy, it’s not for everyone, I respect your opinions. Then within the next year they both got engaged and couldn’t stop flaunting their (larger than mine) rings and talking about wedding planning at every lunch break and how excited they are 😂 I ended up getting married a year and a half earlier than them and spent about 1/8 of the amount they did. It was kind of funny how the tables have turned.
I just emailed HR and Payroll to find out what happens for maternity leave in this district and if I would qualify for the short term disability at all seeing how we just negotiated it, but the plan doesn't start until July. Also trying to figure out if they would just take the amount of time I won't be getting paid and basically splitting it up throughout the year so I don't feel such a huge loss when I go a few weeks without a paycheck. My friend who teachers in the next state over was able to do this, but she had her baby in July and just told them that she would take her 12 weeks FMLA starting day 1 of the school year so they knew exactly what time she would need off. Being due 2 weeks after we go back to work, I have no idea what this will look like. Will I be able to work up until my due date? I haven't done that before because I had so much extra time I didn't have to.
I wish our family planning worked and I was getting ready to go on Maternity leave soon instead and I had the whole summer to snuggle baby like I did with my first two and didn't have to worry about what getting paid was going to look like.
@trapperkeeper87 I probably need to take a page from your book and be more careful. That being said, I had grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch.
@jhysmath I know every district is different. Mine makes you use all your sick/personal leave first. After that, it’s unpaid and then your pay for the rest of the year is prorated because you didn’t work the whole 190 day contract. It sucks! So, I’ll have 2 weeks with no pay at all in November and then Dec-Aug of my pay will be reduced to account for only working 180/190 contracted days. The new salary calendar starts in September of the following year. It may also affect my pension but that’ll be harder to determine. You get the full month’s pension benefits if you work 1/2 the month, so that just depends on when exactly I go out and what part of the month my sick days run out. I’m planning on losing at least 1 month of pension funding though.
Wait, so you don't get paid for the weeks, and then they lower your salary too? That doesn't make sense to me. It sounds like they're double dipping. I'm hoping I can do something like take 3 days off each week if need be and not get paid for 2 days a week, that way it looks like I'm working each week I guess.
@laj0217 It's important to keep enjoying yourself and not be too strict on what you eat, but try to pick healthier versions of what you do eat. I love grilled cheese, so we recently found a lower calorie bread to use. I also just got the supplies today to make my own trail mix again, which I love doing! And I try to start my day with a bowl of oatmeal, a piece of fruit, and a glass of ice water.
As my nutritionist advised me after I had my daughter, "Enjoy your food, but limit the portion size of the unhealthy stuff." Stick with whole grains and the like to really get what you need. My sister is 13 weeks along and struggling with the weight gain, and this is the same advice I gave her. I'm no expert, but I know what's been working for me.
Also, I agree with @jhysmath. Your policy seems to be double-dipping and I can't wrap my head around how it's fair.
@trapperkeeper87 The most reliable way to weigh yourself is to weigh yourself after using the restroom in the morning, no clothes, EVERY DAY, and taking the average for the week.
An average-sized, healthy human’s weight is likely to fluctuate up to four-five pounds from day to day depending on liquid retention (drink little one day, retain more liquid. Eat more salt, retain more liquid… vice versa), food intake vs. bowel movement, and hormones. That was a very brief overview of what affects daily weight, but it’s the gist.
I personally can’t do the weekly average because it gets me into a very unhealthy mindset, but it is genuinely the single most accurate way to weigh yourself.
Maybe I need to talk to HR again. The way I understood it was my salary is based on working 190 days, and is paid every 2 weeks for the last 2 worked. I opt in to have a reserve amount set aside so I get paid an equal amount in the summer. So, if I don’t work two weeks, I don’t get paid the next pay cycle. I also can’t make up those 2 weeks since the school calendar is set, so they prorate the contract by those 2 weeks. It makes sense, but in a very convoluted way I guess.
@pangolindrome That's actually what I do, minus the averaging part. I know for a fact that would screw with my head and I don't really need that aspect.
@jhysmath and @laj0217 I got additional short term through American Fidelity on my own, not through the district, and they pay a percentage of my monthly which ends up being my take-home. I am not sure if I have to use sick leave first; I’m going to schedule an appt to review what exactly the terms are. Coverage is for 90 days, and the monthly payment plan is still pre-tax through my district like our other insurance. I think it’s like $60/month and I don’t end up paying any of it. It might be a nice option is possible, there is plenty of time left to sign up. I wouldn’t have known about it if my friend wasn’t literally using it right now.
@laj0217 if it makes you feel better, I’ve gained 25 lbs at 17 weeks 😵💫 My OB wasn’t too worried but I wanted to talk to someone, so she referred me to a dietician. The dietician said it’s quite common for women who are restrictive in their diets and go hard with their workouts pre-pregnancy to gain a lot of weight early on in the pregnancy when they can’t (and shouldn’t) maintain that same lifestyle, and then later in pregnancy it all tends to level out. She said I should keep up with my healthy choices and portions and continue to work out as many days as I can. She had some suggestions on how to get the most nutrition out of snack time and to increase my protein content, but did not seem to think I needed to change much. It made me feel a ton better because I was focusing on the number on the scale and beating myself up for it. I’m not sure if that rings true for you in any way, but I just thought I’d throw it out there, in case it makes you feel any better!
@laj0217 that makes me sense, because of the summer pay they need to take more out. I didn't even think of that. So yeah I guess they'd have to do the same for me as I get paid in the summer too.
@pangolindrome I'm pretty sure for short term disability you need to be enrolled before pregnancy to qualify. This has been what I've seen in most postings about it.
On another leave note, this past fall a male coworker took 48 days of sick leave for his paternity leave. I thought how awesome and progressive of this district. My husband had to run to the central office today to pick something up and HR tells him that he only gets 15 days per contract and that the guy who had it in the fall or was a paper work mishap and an accident that he got that much time off. Now I'm worried they're going to say I can only get paid for 6 weeks like my last district said. I told my husband he's taking all 15 days if that's the game they're playing. He doesn't want to have to make plans and grade for 15 days worth of work though. I'm also trying to convince him to come up to the high school next year because the teacher next to me is leaving and he needs some high school experience even if I don't want to have to teach next to him.
Why is our country so screwed up with respect to parental leave? My husband is incredibly fortunate to get 12 weeks fully paid at his job, but the fact that it's seen as incredibly fortunate and not as standard across the board is so sad (he'll take 6 weeks upfront and spread the rest over the remainder of a year). I hate hearing about how so many women and men have to choose between earning their money or being home with their children during the first few weeks. It's just so sad... 😔
(Once again, data is primarily gathered from the introductions and ultrasounds posts, with occasional additions from the weekly updates thread).
