The Great Big Queston Thread!

Re: The Great Big Queston Thread!

  • A few days ago I started unisom and B6, which has been a huge help with nausea...but I'm finding I'm tired all day, even when I take unisom at night. Has anyone else had a similar issue? I'm hoping the effect might fade a bit after my body adjusts to the unisom, but I've been pretty useless the last day or two.

  • @lilienne Cut your Unisom in half. It wipes me out the whole next day unless I do that.

  • @trapperkeeper87 thank you! That is really good to know.

  • I just realized my doctor never gave me the option for an NT scan. With my previous pregnancy in WA (located in CA now) it was offered. I did do and receive my NIPT results and everything looks fine there, but is it normal to not give the option of an NT scan? I’m 13 weeks tomorrow so the window for actually receiving a scan is closing quickly.

I did call yesterday and the OBGYN receptionist asked me what an NT scan was and when I explained it to her she said “oh yeah we do those”. So waiting on the doctor to call me back today, but wanted to here what everyone else’s experiences were.
  • @mackenziegr when I realized I wasn't scheduled for a 12 week US I contacted my mw and she told me the scans I had in the last 2 pregnancies weren't actually nt scans and that they don't do them there. If I want one they will send me to the big hospital with the special machine. They said my 12 week us with the others were for other complications and that I don't get another us until the anatomy scan.
  • @mackenziegr mine didn't offer one either!
  • @mackenziegr I'm also in California. Kaiser told me the NT scan wasn't necessary if I was opting into the testing available for CA mothers - I guess it's less reliable than, and redundant with, the other tests I'm already planning to do?

@trapperkeeper87 I took half a unisom tonight and I can feel the difference! Thanks again for the suggestion.

  • @lilienne Pretty sure Kaiser recommends based on age.  I'm also Kaiser in Cali and the NT was something I would have had to "opt out" of rather than "opt in."  But I'm also 43.

@kboydbowman interesting! From Expecting Better, it looked to me like NT scan accuracy decreased with age, so I guessed my age (37) was part of the reason Kaiser skipped it for me. Apparently I'm wrong!

  • @lilienne I also only do 1/2 unisom at night. But I also do 1/4 twice during the day and that definitely took some adjustment!

also, none of my OBs or midwives have ever offered me a NT scan. I’m not AMA and didn’t have any further concerns.

I did mine with my daughter at about 29 weeks because that's when I was beginning to get more uncomfortable, so I wanted to get it out of the way and get things put away.

  • @1stbabydue0912 I did mine with my son when I was 36 weeks pregnant I do not recommend that haha it was not fun for me and I don’t enjoy looking back at those pictures 🤣
  • If COVID is still a thing, which it probably will be, I don't know that I will have an in person baby shower.

  • @1stbabydue0912 I think I was 35 weeks with my first and that was miserable. I’d definitely do it earlier if I could do it again.
  • @trapperkeeper87 I was thinking around then would be perfect. My birthday is that week.

@foreveronyourside and @dsmith211 that is exactly what I was curious about. I want to be comfortable enough to be polite and fun to be around. When does the uncomfortable stage usually start?

@kboydbowman Now I am absolutely for a virtual shower. Everyone stays safe and I can keep my comfy slippers on since the camera won’t show my feet. Virtual showers are also less of an expense.

  • Aiming for June :)
  • This is reassuring, as a friend offered to throw me one in late summer if COVID doesn't interfere. (We have a nice big back deck, so we could do an outdoor shower and I would feel pretty okay about it.) It sounds like that timing isn't terrible.

  • has anyone been struggling with no appetite or hunger at all I don’t have morning sickness or anything but absolutely nothing sounds good the thought of food and drinks makes me sick
  • Let me preface this by saying I'm not depressed or anxious. Not at all. And I know I'm not alone on this feeling.

Like many, it took us over a year to finally get this to this point! I'm excited. He's excited.
I had my first US with my husband two days ago and I am happy to see everything is going well.

But I don't feel expressive in excitement. 10wk in and it still hasn't hit me, despite that I am making effort to ensure I'm doing all I can to promote a healthy pregnancy.

Feeling kind of like that bride who doesn't get that *wow! the one* feeling when she puts on the dress she walks away with.

Perhaps I put the pressure on myself to feel that way?
Or that it took so long?
Maybe because I'm a visual and I'm not showing yet?
Or since I'm with my own inherited health issues that something could be abnormal about the pregnancy that will lead to an abortion?

I don't feel stressed out. Just skeptical-ish. Hopefully the more appointments to confirm a healthy baby, the better it'll get.

    How many can relate?
  • @p_and_bb I’m happy, but I’ve never been very effusive about it, if that’s what you mean? For instance, my mom screamed when she found out…I just called my doctor lol. It’s been sort of a practical experience.

I will say maybe my excitement shows in different ways? I’ve been building a baby registry since I found out, I obsessively combed through baby name lists, I’ve read multiple books already, I actively participate in this board.

I was a bit more excited when I found out the gender. It’s felt more “real” since then, like this will be a successful pregnancy and I can really start planning. We actually bought a couple of cute onesies yesterday.
  • @p_and_bb Don't let it stress you out or anything. I think it all becomes more "real and exciting" when you can feel baby start moving, but everyone is different. I didn't get the "wow" factor when I birthed my little girl like most people describe. It was more like "oh my goodness, I have a living breathing child to take care of now" as they put her on my chest. I felt terrible, but you build that bond and now she's my best friend in this entire world and I can't stand to be apart from her for more than a few hours. Hormones are crazy right now and that bond will form, I promise!
  • Hopefully this question goes here...how do I change my photo?
  • @aaj1821 through your profile.  Like most things in the bump, it's easier to do on the desktop than the mobile lol

@p_and_bb I hear you.  Because of my history I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop and something to go horribly terribly wrong.  Like even if today's visit went wonderfully at tomorrow's visit sure catastrophe will strike.

  • @trapperkeeper87 thanks for stating you forget your pregnant some times, I'm doing the same lol now I don't feel as bad.

I also didn't have that immediate connection that everyone talks about. It was like ok here's a baby. I think it took even longer with my second to connect because she was not a happy baby. She cried all the time had reflux, and was just so heavy. She didn't fall asleep easily and I had to pace around with her to get her to sleep, or convince my husband to take us for a ride on the side by side so she'd finally fall asleep.

On baby showers. I only had them with my first. I had one around 28 weeks with my husband's family and friends. And then I had another one at 36 weeks with my family and friends. I preferred the second one, probably more so because it was my family and I didn't feel like I was just on display opening stuff in front of a bunch of people I barely knew, and some that I didn't even know but MIL invited them anyhow.
  • Guys, oatmeal is making me nauseous 😞 But much less bland food is fine… ugh pregnancy is a trip
  • @1stbabydue0912 I’d probably say around, maybe slightly before 30 weeks is when things got more uncomfortable for me so I’d say sometime before then honestly. I know we wanted to do it after we found out boy or girl (which didn’t end up mattering for us bc they got it wrong at our anatomy scan… long story) so probably between 20/30 weeks would be best. But everyone is different so it really depends.
  • @skyz1lla I'm struggling with appetite, too. I do have some nausea, but a lot of the time the bigger issue is that I logically know that I feel dizzy because I'm hungry, but I don't feel hungry and I can't figure out anything that sounds edible.

@p_and_bb my husband and I are both struggling with something similar, though probably not identical. I think it's the "waiting for the other shoe to drop" feeling @kboydbowman mentioned, and I'm hoping we'll both settle down after NIPT results and once the baby is big enough for me to feel it kicking. But right now we're both swinging between "this is real and we need to prepare" and "this could go wrong any minute," with only very rare and temporary forays into "this is amazing and we're so excited."

  • @p_and_bb I think what you're feeling is super normal. Like some others have said, I forget that I'm pregnant half the time and when I do remember, it's because I've got shooting pain in my back or the weird stretching pains in my stomach. This is my 2nd baby and I'm more excited this time and I think that's mostly because I know more what to expect. I've had a few dreams where I'm getting to hold and meet my baby for the first time and with my first it was like others said. "Whoa, where did this baby come from? Are you sure it's mine? How in the world did I just birth this huge but tiny human?" It's also a huge change in your life. Even if it's a welcome change, having  a baby can bring up a lot of thoughts, feelings, emotions that you can't anticipate and sometimes are confusing. Give yourself grace and take one day at a time (easier said then done, I know but you can try😉)
  • Has anyone ever had positive urine tests but a negative blood test? I took two FRED tests two days apart after having a pin head amount of pink spotting (not usual for me), first was faint but visible and the second was clearly visible with pigment but still lighter than the control line. About 11 dpo, both results showed up almost instantly.
5 days later woke up to cramping and heavy bleeding, doc requested a blood test same day and levels were below 2 miu/ml. Creamy white CM, breast tenderness and high soft cervix were all present day after second test was taken up until bleeding.
    Any insight?

@sydbert I believe you're in the wrong board. This board is for women who have confirmed pregnancies due in September 2022. Please view the other boards and find the appropriate one for you.

Additionally, I believe you have experienced a chemical pregnancy.

  • Does does anyone know of any clothing stores that carry maternity IN STORE? The only place I’ve really found is target and the selection is very small. I hate shopping for clothes online on a normal day, but especially now that I won’t know how anything fits!
  • @knottie...(if you change youre username, it'll be easier to identify you😉) I'm with you on shopping online. Do you have a motherhood maternity anywhere near you? H&M also has a small selection. Otherwise, I think pretty much everything is online. There are quite a few good stores though and a lot of places offer free return shipping so though it's annoying to not know if something will fit, you hopefully won't spend too much extra on shipping and returns if need be.
  • Knottie, Macy’s should also have a maternity section. I bought most of my clothing from them last pregnancy.

Hello everyone, I’m in my 2nd trimester now (14 weeks) I have heard many different things about getting your nails done while pregnant. Do you guys get your nails done? If so what type? My nails can use some loving!
  • @tiniher the main issue is the vapors from the chemicals.  So make sure it's well ventilated.  I don't do my fingernails, but I do get pedis.

  • Hi all! I had to do a one hour glucose last week because I was insulin resistant going into this pregnancy and of course I failed it (just my luck). I have to take a three hour glucose tomorrow and I’m confused about the fasting.

The woman who scheduled me said to fast for twelve hours leading up to the test but that seems like a lot. Everywhere I’ve seen says eight hours. I even saw one resource that said if you fast for more than ten hours your body will start screwing with your sugars and you results could be skewed.

    Anyone have experience with this?
  • @x0morganna I would follow whatever the office told you to do. I’ve always fasted for that long before mine and just make sure I schedule morning appointments.
