The Great Big Queston Thread!

Re: The Great Big Queston Thread!

  • Hello, does anyone know if cassava flour and/or tapioca flour is safe while pregnant? Has anyone eaten it while pregnant before and been fine? When I google it, I get mixed reviews. Some say the flour is fine but the root is dangerous. I ate some cassava chips and kinda freaking out now.

  • Most of the "no nos" in moderation/small amounts really aren't going to do any harm.  Most women do plenty of the "nos" before they actually find out they're pregnant, with no harm done. So one time of eaing cassava chips is not going to give your baby a third arm. :) If you're worried, talk to your doctor, but I would say you're likely fine, and if you're concerned about them just avoid them going forward.
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

  • @pyra007 I don't know for sure and it's definitely worth asking your doctor about, but I don't think eating some cassava chips will impact your pregnancy at all. I am guessing that most warnings about cassava are because the raw root contains a toxin and if it is not cooked correctly, it can cause health problems. But this is mostly a problem for people who are cooking cassava themselves as it is a staple food in many parts of the world. Commercially prepared chips are going to be processed so they do not contain this toxin and eating processed chips as an occasional snack and not a main part of your diet is very unlikely to cause any problems. Just my thoughts to help you relax, but avoid them and call your doctor if you're still concerned!
  • Has anyone had an OB tell them which side the egg came from for their pregnancy!? Mine blew my mind while he was doing the ultrasound he said so nonchalantly the egg came from my right ovary. I asked him how he knew and he said it’s his job. I am so curious to know! I wonder if it is where the egg implanted or something...
  • @x0morganna I hope your ultrasound and appointment go well today! I wish I knew more about medications during pregnancy but I’m sure your doctor can help with your concerns! Looking forward to hearing how it goes!
  • @komamommy My US tech could tell me which ovary as well! I had a transvaginal US for my ultrasound so she showed me both ovaries. One was literally twice the size of the other so that’s how she could tell. It also blew my mind!
  • Anyone have any suggestions for a good sports bra to wear when working out? My boobs hurt so bad any sudden movements I feel like they bounce so hard and it hurts. Even my most supportive sports bras aren’t helping!
  • @komamommy @lilbean18 wow! That’s so interesting!! I never heard that before!
  • @x_tina729 Brooks has been working well for me for every day. I have this one I bought off Amazon I think in 32FF. https://www.brooksrunning.com/en_us/dare-underwire-run-bra/350078.html
  • @komamommy with my first they checked out my ovaries so they told me, it matched the side I felt ovulation pain from so I thought that was pretty cool.
  • Hi All, would love your feedback about how I'm feeling. I had my first visit with my OB today. And while I have nothing overtly negative to say about him, a part of me is questioning if it's the right fit. Even though I'm a new patient, he didn't establish much of a connection through small talk or asking about my personal life. We basically started with the pelvic exam. He is also the only OB at the practice currently, so he said it would either be him or one of 4 hospital OBs that delivers for me. Though, I won't have the opportunity to meet any of the hospital OBs. That makes me nervous. And finally, I struggle with anxiety, and while it's pretty well managed through (pregnancy-safe) medication, discussing my mental health didn't seem to be a priority.

There is an all-female OB office connected to a different hospital, both of which are further away (closer to Boston), but both the office and the hospital get outstanding reviews. I am going to call to see if I can set up a consultation with them. Does this seem like the right choice? Or am I just being a Nervous Nelly?!?
  • @bigworldlittleg I’m a big believer in trusting your gut. If it doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to go somewhere else. Pregnancy is challenging and overwhelming. You need someone that you can trust for the next almost nine months.

That being said, my doctor is very similar. He told me that he might not be the one to deliver my DD and he wasn’t. It was a midwife that I’d never met before, but it didn’t bother me. Ultimately, I trust myself and listen to my own counsel (and that of trusted women who have been through this), so it could have been a freaking boy-scout at the business end in the delivery room and I wouldn’t have cared. But that’s just who I am as a person. I was like, “I’ve watched so many YouTubes about this! Let’s go!” 😂

  • @bigworldlittleg I do not see male OBs, period, so I'm biased, but I would 100% go to the all female office.  I drive an hour to my OBs and the hospital is also an hour, so I'm used to that lol

  • Thank you for the feedback @elle-0409 and @kboydbowman !! I agree that I should trust my gut. It's something I struggle to do. And even though I may not find a practice that calms every one of my nerves, a consultation can't hurt! The practice is called "About Women By Women" which I just love. And if I decide it's the right place, a bit of a longer drive is worth it for my wellbeing and peace of mind!
  • My philosophy is that I wouldn't go to a mechanic who had never driven a car, so why would I want someone messing wih my uterus if they've never had one?

  • @errie28 thank you! This looks nice and supportive I may have to bite the bullet and get it. I’m just unsure if I should wait because I may grow more
  • I was surprised to learn that I will only have 2 ultrasounds through my whole pregnancy - the first being the dating scan which I already had at 6w+6d and the 2nd for the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. Is that the case for everyone? It seems strange that they wouldn’t want to take a look at the baby more often to make sure everything is developing correctly…
  • @puzzlehead11 that's pretty typical unless you're recommended for NIPT/NT (usually if you're AMA or otherwise high risk), which happens around 12 weeks.  There is no medical benefit to extra USs without cause, so many doctors choose not to do extra unless they're clinically indicated.  Usually if you're not recommended for extra USs, you should consider this a GOOD thing, as it means your doctor has no reason to suspect that there's a chance anything is amiss.  I will have to have one every 2 weeks, but that's because I'm at elevated risk for extreme early cervical dilation and they have to keep a close eye on my cervical length.  So while it will be nice to see my baby more often, I wish it wasn't necessary.

I would schedule a consult with the other office.I do not think wanting to be comfortable is a huge ask. If you’re not comfortable or reassured with him. What’s the harm in getting a feel of the other office? I say go for it mama. @bigworldlittleg
  • @puzzlehead11 I will only have 1 ultrasound at 20 weeks. They don't do dating ultrasounds where I live (Norway). So yes, it can be normal. I'm with you on wanting to see the baby more but if your belly is growing and the heartbeat is good throughout then most likely everything is ok. If they suspect a problem then you will get more.
  • yay @x0morganna!!

The only real deal with the anterior placenta is that it may take longer for you to feel the baby kicking compared to having a posterior placenta.  But it's generally not a big deal otherwise.

  • @lilbean18 Thanks! It must have been the size because the left one was much smaller and hard to find. How cool!
  • @x0morganna I had an anterior placenta with my daughter and it was a non issue. I felt her kick right at 17 weeks.
  • @puzzlehead11 my provider does a dating scan, anatomy scan and then a bedside ultrasound at 36 weeks to check if baby is head down (you can literally just see the top of their head on that one).
  • @bigworldlittleg - i'm in massachusetts too and love my new OB's office, it's mostly women and they do a great job making you feel welcome. My last OB's office was also all women and great. Feel free to message me if you want the office names (not sure which area you're in)
  • Thank you @kboydbowman and @scimomma for the help and reassurance! I really appreciate the kindness
  • @lilbean18 @theblondebump @komamommy they can tell because the ovary the egg was released from will have a cyst called a corpus luteal cyst. When an egg is getting ready to be released it is pushed out of the ovary in a cyst. The cyst remains intact until the body registers that the egg was fertilised or not. If it wasn’t then the cyst shrinks back down & goes away, but if it is then it grows slightly larger (usually around 2-3cm) and this is what emits progesterone. The placenta starts to take over around 10-12 weeks and the cyst slowly shrinks back down until the placenta is in full swing around 16-18 weeks and the cyst is fully resolved.

Fun fact, sometimes they grow too large and may or may not cause issues. I had a 7cm CL cyst during the pregnancy with my daughter that caused me extreme pain. I had booked in to have it removed at 16 weeks due to this & on the morning of the surgery I started vomiting unexplainably. The surgeon told me the weight of it had caused my ovary to flip over and twist my fallopian tube, cutting off the blood supply to my ovary and my body had started going into shock. So lucky I had followed my instincts and pushed to see someone about the amount of pain I was in! And while that’s a bit of a horror story, another lady in my BMB also had a CL cyst that was 20cm!!!! And it caused her absolutely no issues. She had to get it removed several months after her babe was born as the cyst did not resolve by itself and could have caused issues down the line, but she was unaware that it was even there.

Super interesting how it all works!
  • @wiseh Thank you! This is incredible!
  • @wiseh that was literally the most helpful thing I’ve ever read! I’ve been wondering what my cyst was (noted in ultrasound) and my doc was like oh it’s probably a corpus luteal cyst that’s totally normal and I had no idea what that meant, so thank you! I’m sorry you had such a scary experience but appreciate you sharing!!
  • Anyone have their progesterone checked? What did your doctor want your levels to be?

I first had my levels checked at 14dpo. It was 14.9 ng/mL. I was put on 200mg progesterone orally at bedtime. I got checked again at 8w6d and it had only gone up to 16.2 ng/mL. She said that was fine but that seems strange that it hardly went up at all. I know progesterone can fluctuate throughout the day so I'm just curious if anyone else has experience. I'm probably just paranoid because I had a 2nd trimester loss so I'm concerned low progesterone could have been the cause. Especially since it happened right around the time the placenta should have been taking over progesterone production.

  • @ashley35209 I've not had my progesterone checked but I know quite a few people who have had to take progesterone. I believe the tablets are not as well absorbed as suppositories' or the creams, but from my quick google your levels seem to be within the normal range. Are you continuing to have them monitored to ensure they keep increasing appropriately?

  • @wiseh she hasn't mentioned checking it again. Only mentioned checking my thyroid levels every 4 weeks. I may just request that we keep checking it. I just don't want to wait too long if my dose needs to be increased.

  • @ashley35209 I would request to get another test. I think at 8 weeks doctors like it to be at least a 15, but prefer a 20. I think it’s good for your peace of mind. ❤️

  • Is anyone doing a maternity photo shoot? I know it seems early, but good photographers book up quickly. I never did this with my DD, but considering this will most likely be our last child, I’d like to do it. What was your experience like and what advice would you give?

  • I agree with @elle-0409 - I definitely think you should request it again. If you're already getting thyroid checked at regular intervals then I would hope there's no issues to add on the progesterone checks. Does your doctor know your loss history? @ashley35209
  • @elle-0409 I did! Highly recommend :) my advice would be to ask the photographer you’re thinking of hiring for a full gallery of an actual maternity client. Sometime around 30-32 weeks is usually the best time so you have a nice belly, but not feeling too swollen, hot, etc.
  • @elle-0409 I actuality just started looking into this tonight. I did one with my daughter (very last minute and I was so uncomfortable and huge), and since I honestly don't know if I'll go for a third baby, I don't want to miss out on it with this baby either.

I would advise to plan for it between about 25-30 weeks so you have a nice, good bump, but are still relatively comfortable. Some photographers offer a closet of gowns to borrow, which is the direction I went last time; that can obviously save some money. I've also noticed that many photographers in my area offer a discount if you do a newborn session with them as well, so that may be worth considering.

  • @wiseh she does. It was in October and she was my dr then, too. I have to go back next Thursday so I will bring it up then.

  • @elle-0409 I did an informal one with my dad (who is a landscape & portrait photographer) around 37 weeks. I didn't love the experience and we only got 1 nice photo so this time I have hired a photographer. She recommended doing it between 34-37 weeks and also does it with a newborn package.

Regarding clothing, if your photographer doesn't have suitable clothes another option is to hire something. I'm not sure how common clothes hire places are during COVID but if you're comfortable with that, it'll be way cheaper than buying a flowy maternity gown  (that's assuming you want a flowy maternity gown)
