Covid

Just wanted to say, please get your covid vaccine if you haven’t already.

Re: Covid

  • THANK YOU. I am holding out hope that they’ll approve boosters for pregnant women soon.

  • I am very surprised my doctor has never asked me if I have been vaccinated. I am not against the vaccine, but for some reason I just don't want to get it until I'm done with pregnancy. I'm not into all of the conspiracy theories but I just don't want to take a chance on effecting the baby's development. I'm still unsure!
  • I got both shots while pregnant - first at 8 weeks, second at 15 weeks. The CDC just released a statement that they have approved and encourage the vaccine for pregnant women since it can be especially harmful to pregnant women and baby.
  • @nik012 Just in case you haven’t seen this: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/08/11/health/cdc-recommends-covid-19-vaccine-pregnant-women-wellness/index.html

Pregnant women have been getting the vaccine for over 9 months now and they haven’t seen any increased risk of miscarriage or complications.

I know this is one case, but it made me thankful I got my vaccine (I actually got my second shot the day after my embryo transfer): https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/8101561002

I’m only posting these because you said you were still unsure. I have nothing but total confidence in the vaccine, and I really hope that you’ll reconsider. It’s just getting so bad with Delta. I know it’s kind of a scary decision, but tens of millions of people have gotten it and the documented issues with it are so unbelievably few and far between.
  • If you are looking  for more information and results of any studies that have taken place, @babiesafter35 (she's a MFM OBGYN) on Instagram has numerous posts saved in highlights.  I was eligible early on since I work in healthcare and was still breastfeeding at the time; the information she posted helped me feel confident in my decision.

Covid is very dangerous in pregnancy. Moms (and babies in utero) are dying. Do it for your baby at the least.
  • The hospital i work is part of Vanderbilt and are mandating all employees. I however have gotten my dr to give me medical exemption. I am going to hold off as long as I can. I do not want the vaccine. No judgement needed.
  • I wish people would be ok with medical decisions being made between the dr and patient. If you get it, great! Hope it helps you! If you don’t, great! It’s really none of my business. People make the best decisions for them and their family based on their needs.
  • @lisa3379 yes…I don’t understand healthcare workers especially who ignore the seriousness of Covid-19. I sincerely hope no one here gets sick, when serious illness can be prevented. At the least, talk to your OB. The vaccine is recommended for all pregnant people by every major health organization including ACOG, SMFM and CDC. The recommendation is newish, but I would question any provider who isn’t recommending it. Be aware of what’s happening across the country/world.
  • @karenmarie9 We drove up to Truckee to get our first shot! It was easier to get an appointment up there than down here. And yeah, it's interesting to see what things people trust medical professionals about (getting care in hospitals, for one) but don't trust them in other areas (vaccines). I also wonder how many anti-vax people have tattoos. Tattoo ink isn't FDA-approved, yet people seem to give zero thought to that.
  • I'm seeing a lot of hate in this thread. This makes me feel like I need to speak up and defend myself. Not all pregnant people can get vaccinated. I've worked with my doctor, evaluated my current condition and risks, and determined I should wait for more data. I've been open with my friends and family about this, and allow them to make decisions about their interactions with me. I wear masks indoors when asked.
I am by no means anti-vax. I'm up to date on all approved vaccines and so is my one year old daughter.
Also, I did consider a tattoo once and decided against it due to the unregulated inks.

What else should I say? I am human too. Thanks to those that spoke up on the other side.
  • @Limes030, I have no hate. I understand that some people have different situations and aren’t getting vaccinated because of those risks. Those cases are clearly different in my eyes. It’s the people that believe all the BS about vaccines/haven’t gotten around to it/don’t want to be told “what to do” that I’m a bit critical of.
  • @Limes030 - no hate from me either!  But like I said before I’ve literally poisoned every ounce of my body with chemo.  And participated in clinical trials for the radiation. So the vaccine was a no brainer for me.  I just stick my arm out and take whatever the doctors tell me too🤣 BUT it would be a completely different story if I had already been pregnant.  Oh yeah and I’ve definitely got a few tattoos as well…. Ooops didn’t know the ink wasn’t approved.  Did you know you get tattoos for radiation too? Oh well.  Stay safe and do what you think is right for you and your baby.
  • @Limes030 What @lisa3379 and @karenmarie9 said. I think it’s totally different if you’re in consultation with a doctor who advised you not to get it for valid medical reasons.

I do find it interesting though that in NY, when the vaccines first became available and were only open to the elderly and immuno-compromised, pregnancy was listed as a comorbidity.
  • No hate here either 🤷🏻‍♀️. I don’t want people to die, that’s all. I’m surrounded by high risk people, many who can’t get vaccinated. I’m just infuriated by all the tragic preventable deaths.
  • Thanks all, it is a tough time for the world right now. I guess get defensive when people talk about the vaccine like it's black and white. Since I'm living in the grey area.. I feel like I'm being considerate- but it's really tough to navigate when I have 4 doctors, and only one of them looks at me like an individual.. and that's the one that says "I don't know.. you could be one of the ones to have complications from the vaccine.. I would wait for more data..". It takes courage to go against the norms to evaluate me as an individual.
Sigh. I've struggled with this for the whole year. And with everyone in my life poking me about it.. I'm getting tired.
I hope that makes sense. 💕
  • @Limes030 that makes a lot of sense. You definitely didn’t owe us an explanation by any means, but being open helps everyone understand what each is going through. Helps everyone relate a bit better. Thanks for sharing that. 🙂❤️
  • I feel it's everyone's personal decision. Amd not throwing hate. But it should be no one's business but your own wether you vaccinate or not. Its also another way to divide our nation amd our world for that matter. As if there werent enough hate and division.

I would love to see if all the people who "don't trust the vaccine" end up trusting science once they need to be hospitalized. It makes me want to spit nails.
  • We all have to be our own advocates for our own health. I'm doing what I think is best for me and my family. If I don't get the vaccine it's not because I don't trust science. I've looked at the science.. there is a risk vs benefit analysis that does not close for me. If I go to the hospital, I do the same risk vs benefit analysis for treatments.. with the recommendations of the doctors and advocates/family around me.
I'm curious how many people out there really are ill-intentioned about not getting the vaccine.

Plus, I thought the ICU beds (at least by me in WA) are full of all other sorts of illnesses.. not covid. Hospital capacity is definitely a concern, and is impacted hugely by how the hospital is run & the season.

For people that have legit health related reasons not to get the vaccine I totally understand. But when people say “the science” isn’t convincing - you either don’t understand how to find reputable research and interpret it or you’re choosing to digest unreliable sources.
  • Again. All i see here is division and hatred.
  • I don’t see hatred either. There’s difference of views here. Really, that’s all I see. Sometimes difference in views can be interpreted as disrespect or hatred because of emotion getting involved. Maybe just take a step back from this thread if you feel an emotion that strong. It might benefit your mental health, and if not, you’re not missing anything. No one is changing anyone else’s views here, not that they were trying. I’m just trying to say you won’t miss anything from stepping away if all you’re taking from this is a feeling of hatred.
  • You know what I hate? Covid. Also, people dying preventable deaths. I’m sorry but the number of unvaccinated pregnant women hospitalized with covid and on ventilators is concerning. Do I hate those who aren’t vaccinated? Of course not. But I am worried sick about them. I do not hate my unvaccinated friend who is in the ICU at the moment. But I am frustrated.

I’m with @kcf19. I’m frustrated. But I’ll freely admit, yes, I do have disdain for those who refuse to be vaccinated (again, not if you have a valid medical condition that prohibits you from getting it). I have disdain for people who are knowingly putting the elderly, the immunocompromised, and children at risk. I have disdain for people whose disregard and bad decision making could get me and my family sick, even though we have done everything we can to protect ourselves. I’m lucky I live in a place where the virus is not that bad (right now…who the hell knows what the future holds), but I remember how horrific it was here in the early days before we had a highly effective and available solution. I don’t ever want us to go back to that place.
  • I'm just going to leave this here...

Disclaimer: this of course does not include those who have a legitimate, medical reason for not being able/eligible to get the vaccine.

  • So question related to covid/vaccination status -- how are you all managing unvaccinated family members when baby arrives (or even now, ha)? Fortunately, all eligible members of my family are fully vaccinated, but H has several family members who are not interested.
  • @felix08 We are lucky that all of our family members and close friends are fully vaccinated. I wouldn't let anyone unvaccinated come visit, if that were the case. We're also all (me + DH, and grandparents) getting flu shots and TDAP boosters.
  • @felix08 I’m in the same boat. My husband  and I are vaccinated along with my parents but a few members of DH’s family are not. I just hope they come to their senses before the baby is born because I really won’t feel comfortable with them around the baby.

  • @GracieL79 Yes, I'm hoping that us saying only vaccinated people can visit the baby will maybe be the motivation they need.
  • @felix08 Everyone in our family is vaccinated, thankfully. If that wasn't the case, I wouldn't let anyone come visit the baby unless they isolated for awhile beforehand and then had a negative test.

With the current positive rate here I’m limiting all contact with people outside our immediate family vaccinated or not. It’s gonna be a longgg winter.
  • @felix08 we refuse to let MIL visit until she's vaccinated (we live out of state from all family so there are no quick outside visits).  It caused a significant issue for the past 5 months with her calling us unfair and keeping her grandson away from her. She doesn't have a medical reason to not be vaccinated and we simply stated we weren't keeping her grandson from her, she had a choice and she made her choice.
We have been consistent with vaccines--we hosted Christmas when DS was 5 months everyone was required to have a flu shot.  And my parents and cousin (who would be spending the most time around our son) were requested to get the tDap.  We currently don't let >12 year olds into our home unless vaccinated.
