I don’t like cats! I’m allergic, I think they are pretty but they are fickle, sneaky, and I think it’s weird they poo in the house.

@paytonpedro @pajamstagrams I despise that board so much. Especially after I got into an argument with someone that Rowan is (or can be) a girl's name. They were adamant that it was a boy name only yet myself and a couple people chimed in that the only Rowans they knew were girls.

@daisy0322 the argument was that its meaning is something like "king's (something something)" so it couldn't be a girl's name. I couldn't find that meaning anywhere I looked.

@inthewoods23 I've definitely read a couple books with a female Rowan, and some with a male Rowan. Can go both ways! It's a beautiful name either way.

Oh I have one for this! I realized my pants were split at the seam at workand upon looking in the bathroom mirror and figuring it wasn't that noticeable, I just wore them all day!

@inthewoods23 @bows22 @pajamstagrams omg what is up with the Extremely Inflexible Opinions about gendered baby names?! I totally share your irritation, @inthewoods23.

Naming traditions change over time, sheesh. Like, read any nineteenth-century book and you'll find all sorts of characters whose names seem weirdly gendered from our present view. Case in point: Tracy is a common women's name now, but it used to be more often a men's name (I have a Tracy in the family who was named after her father). Winifred, another (super old-fashioned these days) name that is more commonly associated with girls/or rather ancient old ladies, has historically also been a boy's name. And even if someone were the first person in the history of the planet to apply a "boy's name" to a girl, whatevs! It's their call! If the kid hates it, they'll change it when they turn 18!

In addition to Tracy, you've got names like Shannon and Ashley as well that were like that. Very popular boys names long ago and are now more associated as girl names. And the same happened with what we now consider boy names. I think George and Matthew were considered girl names way back when. Perhaps a couple others.

I had a coworker at my last job who was one of the guys out in the field that is named Alexis. For the longest time I had only communicated with him by email so it took me a second to realize what my boss was saying when she introduced him to me in person. I guess in all that time they must have always said his name instead of "he" in conversations. How that happened I don't know, or I completely missed that cue.

@inthewoods23 add Aubrey to the "boy name turned girl name" list. Maybe Lindsay and Sydney too? And Courtney. I know a dude who is named Courtney. Oh and let's talk about all the girls named Darcy! So many names are perfect for any gender.

@fameonmain2 oh that reminded me of mine!

I was at a client yesterday and didn’t notice until maybe 3 pm that my shirt was on inside out. I actually don’t think anyone would have noticed EXCEPT it had a side tag so there’s no way I totally got away with it.

My FFFC is that it’s not the first time it’s happened. I’m a total mess.

Okay, I have to weigh in on the name things... I don't know why, but in Canada, there are way fewer unisex names. Like, I moved here and suddenly it's Lindsay is a boy, Kelly is a boy, Ashley is a boy (actually, now that I think about it Ashley MacIsaac is a dude... he's a Canadian fiddler). And there are a bunch more that kinda had me... woah, you're a dude?! Also, name Jesse is way more popular here.

thinking about names and gender reminds me of this female professor i met early in my grad career, who is now retired but began working in academia long before women were common in her field, during the mid-20th century. recognizing after some experimentation that she was unlikely to ever be published or have her papers accepted at conferences under her birth name, she changed her name (legally) to one that was unambiguously male; I'll call her Joseph (her name is not Joseph). Anyhow, even though it would be possible to feminize the adoptive name by adding an "ine" (or in the case of her real adopted name, another suffix), she has throughout her career insisted on going by Joseph (or, you know, Professor X, to her undergraduate students) with all of her colleagues. She presents otherwise in a fairly conservative, gender-normative fashion. She says that whereas she struggled to get published under her birth name, after changing to her adoptive name, journals started accepting her articles, and she began to be invited to conferences (where the audiences she spoke to were visibly shocked by her appearance on stage for several years until she became famous in the field for both her work and her identity). I believe she has retained the adoptive name even amongst her colleagues as a sort of badge of honor, like "this is what I had to do in order to be recognized."

Sorry for being off-topic! The discussion just got me thinking about names and their consequences for the people that carry them. I'm not sure if there's a lesson to be found there or not.

Late to the party but yes @acleverusername, I would agree that it's a lot less common here to use traditionally "gendered" names as a unisex name. We have the common ones - Alex, Taylor, Morgan - but you're a lot less likely to see Ryan being used for a girl, etc. That said, I do think these things are generational so maybe it's just that Canada hasn't caught up to the US yet. Those trendy kind of names are definitely becoming more popular these days.

@optimistgardener oh 100% there's a lesson to be learned from that. There are quite a few female (fiction) authors who have written under male pseudonyms/pen names for various reasons, mostly because they either thought it would draw a larger male audience if it was thought that they were male, or because it was the only reason their publishers would take them on because male authors sell more books. Maybe less so these days but definitely 100 years ago that was a thing.
