  • Even though my county, and most around, are still in a phase that only technically allows medial, first responders, the elderly, and now essential works...we recently found out the county next to us is giving them to anyone no questions asked. Including out of state (we live near the border). Friends of ours from the next state drove down to get theirs last week.

My husband has really considered just going up and getting his, but we need to find out info about the second dose. His job requires a lot of travel for extended periods of time, and once he gets it he will likely be away for 6 weeks. He doesn't want to get it if that affects how/when he can get his second dose. If there's no time constraint on how far afterwards he can get it I think he might.

Since my midwife suggests to wait until the third trimester I probably won't get it until then. Although I admit to being a little anxious about wanting to go ahead and get it. I just worry about making the wrong decision.
  • I know it hasn't been approved yet, but does anyone know of any info about the Johnson & Johnson vaccine? I've seen a lot of info on mRNA vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna to where I feel comfortable with my decision should I be able to get one, but don't know much about J&J (particularly implications it may have for pregnant women).
  • @akoros I haven't seen anything re: pregnancy. It's not an mRNA vaccine, which is why it's going to be easier to distribute- doesn't need to be as cold, and I think I saw that the "shelf life" of room temperature injections is longer too. But they couldn't test on pregnant people either so 🤷🏼‍♀️
  • We were hopeful that mh and I would both be able to get vaccinated prior to the baby arriving, but I don't feel like the vaccine distribution is going well in our state and I think its unlikely I'll be able to get it.  The governor keeps bumping up who is eligible when, but there's no change to how many doses we have so no one can actually get the vaccine any sooner than before, its super frustrating.  Last week he came out said that all teachers would get the vaccine during the last 3 weeks of feb. (mh is a teacher) but he came out yesterday and said that due to supply issues and still not being done with the prior groups it was unlikely they could get vaccines until the end of March.  Pregnant women are in the spring group but since the current groups look like they are already spilling into spring I don't have much hope that I'll be able to get it unless there are some big changes in how distribution is handled.  I may just put myself on a cancellation list for a nearby hospital and hope for the best.
  • @angelz - When asked, my midwife told me that in her research she decided to suggest the third trimester based on talking to other professionals, and primarily the hospital pharmacist - which is who mixes the vaccine. The pharmacist is a current patient at the practice (and of my midwife) and is also pregnant. She herself said that she'd be getting it, but waiting until the third trimester because at that point everything is formed....just in case. I think really at this point medical professionals are just being as cautious as they can, because with anything there's just never any research with pregnant women. I actually leave in just over a week for a trip that I will be flying, and even though I will only be 22w I plan to talk to them again at my appointment in a few days to see if it's worth me considering trying to get it before I leave.
  • @angelz429 Thanks for sharing! Saving this to check out later!!

  • I saw this article today- it's about how kids who had the flu shot and pneumoncocal shot were less likely to develop severe covid-19 symptoms than kids who didn't get those vaccines. I wonder if this could be true for adults as well? It brought me some comfort as the parent of two young flu- shotted kids so thought I'd share here too.

  • @legallykate I know, right? I hoping it's a premonition, got a message today that my boss included me on a list of "critical" employees. We don't really know what the Department is using that for, but there's a chance that they might use that list to provide vaccinations
  • @MelissaMay82 yay!! Good luck over the next few days!! I'm getting mine next Friday and am a bit nervous about the side effects
  • @_orchid_ I’m nervous about the side effects too. I was already feeling a little crappy this morning (DD was up a lot last night) but so far just the start of a sore arm.

  • @MelissaMay82 I hope dd sleeps better tonight so you can rest!!
@legallykate that sounds like a good idea, or just let work know you *might* need the time off. My neighbor got it and was in bed all day the next day, but a friend got it and said his arm was just a bit more sore than the first shot, and he has a slight headache.

DH and I are getting it at the same time and that's part of what makes me nervous- parenting while recovering 😂 better than both having covid at the same time though!!
  • @DoubleUp8 we've been lucky and mostly avoided being sick at the same time... Except for last February when we both got ds2's stomach bug within like 2 hours of each other. We have a two bathroom house and neither one of us could get off the floor of our respective bathroom. Both kids were like "Uhhhh WTF?!". That experience was part of the reason we locked down for covid so hard 😂
  • @_orchid_ @legallykate @MelissaMay82 I was nervous about how I would feel after my second too. I actually felt completely fine with no side effects. I had less pain in my arm than the first and only a little brain fog for the first few hours after. DH had his two days later (didn’t want us both having side effects at the same time) and he too had no side effects. I think his arm hurt worse than mine, but he had no side effects.
  • @bklynchica Yay! I heard that DC is starting on my group March 1st, I know it'll take a while to actually get an appointment but I'm so excited.

Read an article today about how women of childbearing age are (or are becoming) the biggest hurdle to vaccination efforts. Beyond the unclear messaging for pregnant and breastfeeding women, there's also that stupid fertility misinformation that's going around (I hadn't even heard of that one, but apparently even some medical staff got confused by it). I know that it's a personal decision, but the lack of coherent information to make an educated decision (and abundance of misinformation) is so frustrating.
  • @artsiefartsie sending baby dust!! Personally idk if I would have been comfortable getting it during first tri (I'm pgal and get super paranoid/nervous about everything during first tri). Obviously felt good enough about it to get it 2nd tri! Good luck
  • Good luck @artsiefartsie!  Sending all the sticky and positive vibes your way!!

  • @_orchid_ That's where I'm leaning right now. Like someone said previously even if there is little to no chance of harm,  after my history of loss my brain would obsess over the "what ifs" if anything happened.
  • @artsiefartsie miss you girl!!! Hope your doing well. Im sending all the sticky baby vibes/dust your way!

  • @artsiefartsie Hey! Sending all the sticky vibes! I think someone else mentioned it but Pfizer just started a trial on pregnant women, so hopefully it will have some good info about what the ideal time is during pregnancy for the vaccine. I am not eligible until March 15th, but might wait a week or two to get me close to 30 weeks. Then I will be fully vaccinated by 35 weeks and deliver within 2 weeks of that.

Eligible as of today! Got through on the DC Health system (picked a date/time/location), but by the time the referral to One Medical loaded all the appointments were gone. Whomp whomp, but actually better than I expected. Still super excited that it's even an option right now
  • @artsiefartsie Good to see you, and good luck! Fwiw, my doctors' reactions have changed significantly over the past few months. It's always been "no/not advised," but starting a couple of weeks ago they switched to giving us decision aids (https://foamcast.org/covidvacpregnancy/). I was going to wait until I was actually eligible for a vaccine to broach the topic again.
  • @akoros yay!! That's great!!
@legallykate good luck!! Hope it's not too rough!
  • I’m getting my first dose on Sunday!! A high school friend posted on Facebook yesterday that CVS had appointments available near me - I hightailed it to the website and snagged my appointments for both doses. So excited! (Yet also nervous, lol). Anyone heard any data on reactions to the vaccine if you’ve had Covid? I had Covid in November and a friend at my sons school said she felt like sh*t after the first vaccine and blamed already having Covid on it. Apparently the first shot is more like the “booster” (second shot) to people who have already had Covid. Hmmm...? Not sure what to think about that!

  • So glad so many of you are getting the vaccines and also a bit jealous here!

They updated our states vaccine distribution plan yesterday and removed pregnancy from the list of high risk conditions, wtf?!  If he hadn't changed it I would have been eligible at the end of March based on the prior plan, now its a complete who knows.  My slightly crazy hormonal self is considering sending a nasty email to the governor.... :disappointed:
