Re: COVID and Pregnancy

  • @toesinthesand-2 DH isn't answered to come to any appointment at my practice, not even the a/s this week. I have to video call him in and it's just not the same.

Midwife mentioned at my last appointment that the Covid test at L&D not only puts the staff on alert, but a positive result would limit the types of pain meds they can offer. She did NOT say “if you have Covid you can’t get an epidural” but I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t want to mix Covid treatment with pain meds. Also I imagine it’s easier for partners to stay masked or six feet away than laboring moms. I’ve already made a mental note to worry more about this later
  • I had originally planned to wait on the vaccine but prior to my appt this past Tuesday I decided I would get it and tell my OB that I was doing so.  Work was stressing me out and making me uneasy being around patients. But now that I’m home on bedrest I’ll just wait.  By the time I deliver they will likely be offering it to patients at the hospital so I’ll get it then or I’ll get it shortly before I deliver.  I’m still considered tier one even if I am on bedrest lol 😂
  • @llamamamawearspajamapants that's a great point re: pain medications. I would assume it could also make post- delivery treatment different too depending on how you deliver- since covid can cause increased blood clotting, I wonder if post-c requires additional blood thinner.

I'm starting to consider a 2 week quarantine for me and my family prior to my RCS date. I originally thought I'd work up to the date like I have with my other 2, but the possibility of one of us getting covid then is making me rethink.
  • @_orchid_ the hospital I will deliver at is requiring a covid test two weeks in advance of your due date (that they administer) and then quarantine until delivery.
  • @ellieemc26 good to know! I'm in a local fb group for 2021 babies and many of the people in the group are delivering at the same hospital I will be. I haven't seen this come up yet but I will ask when June is closer!
  • In the summer our hospital had a test then quarantine until your surgery and then they tested you again (with a rapid test) right before your surgery/procedure/ delivery.  Idk how that works with deliveries since it’s usually on baby’s time not scheduled lol
  • I was wondering about the timing of the tests too since timing of delivery is probably mostly out of our control!  Of course I also expect policies are likely to change by the time I'm supposed to do that so we'll see what they're doing at that point.

I'm fortunate that I have been and will be working form home up to delivery as I don't have the option to get the vaccine right now, but should have no problem quarantining myself.
  • @klj0228 that poor mom! Will they let her hold baby soon since she's already 13 days out? Ugh my heart really goes out to her and others in that situation.
  • @_orchid_ they finally let mom hold baby Friday evening. Dad has been banned from the hospital because he tested positive Friday. He was never tested when mom was originally because they just assumed he had it, but the hospital ended up making him test after baby came back negative. They are now not planning to release baby until Friday. She had pneumonia and maybe a couple other small things. Mom can visit as much as she wants now so that helps.
  • @klj0228 Oh no! I am sorry for what that family is going through. That has to be so hard.

@mc0303 What?! Yay! I hadn’t heard that yet. I heard phase 2 was families with children that were high risk due to physical conditions. I had planned on talking with my OB in the next appointment or two, so that is great timing.
  • @mc0303 That's great! I'm still out over here, they're still working on "over 65" and medical staff. My friend in Montana is eligible now since she and her husband are college professors (they lumped all educators together) and I'm jealous. That said, I'm working from home until who knows when (my guess is they'll open back up in the summer), so it's not that terrible for me to continue to isolate. It's still nice knowing that there's light at the end of the tunnel.
  • @klj0228 that’s beyond awful!

@ramzlau yes! My city has its own health dept and pregnancy is being considered an underlying condition in the next phase.

@akoros I hope things speed up and you can get yours too!!
  • @mc0303 I am eligible now in Texas because of pregnancy too, but the distribution here has been such a clusterf*ck it is impossible to make an appointment, gah. My 71 year old mom finally got her first one last week but they couldn't even schedule her second dose, eek. Since I am able to self-isolate I'm okay with waiting until closer to delivery if necessary though with the hope that maybe Baby Boy will have ongoing immunity after birth.

    @legallykate Yay!!

I just found out that pregnant women *might* be slightly prioritized in DC, though not until Phase 1C (i.e. 3rd phase). Supposedly they were planning to start that in February, but 1B is taking a lot longer than planned so probably looking more like March or April. Near impossible to find this information, I finally figured it out because of an article about how DC might also prioritize everyone with a BMI above 25 (works for me too, yay for being chubby), per a second CDC list of risk factors.
  • @angelz429 you’re giving me hope that my second shot won’t be too bad. My arm hurt so bad after my first. Did you get Pfizer or Moderna?

@legallykate yay for your first round! It gives me so much hope seeing people vaccinated.
  • @angelz429 I also got pfizer
  • @angelz429, I've been doing v-safe too! I'm surprised the pregnancies reported are so low, but I guess a lot of states haven't offered it to pregnant women yet?

  • @legallykate Perhaps? I know the states around me (DC, VA, MD, PA) are still just doing medical workers and over 65yo, which means you're only really going to be able to capture pregnant medical workers. I'd think the numbers would go up once they open it up to other essential workers or those with underlying conditions (particularly if they're counting pregnancy as one of the conditions).
  • FYI, just noticed that my OB-GYN posted up this link in case it's useful: https://foamcast.org/covidvacpregnancy/

Summarizes a lot of what's already been discussed here, but I liked the way it's laid out. It only considers the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, though. While some of this would still apply to other vaccines, such as Johnson & Johnson, I'm not sure about the differences in how that vaccine works and those implications for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
