Agreed on the vaccine front. If I weren’t pregnant, I’d absolutely get it. As it is I’m trying to lobby work to work from home full time. I’m on round two of request letter from midwife!
@laurad75@Omie_Wise that’s awesome you guys are in a study! I tried to sign up for one, but I think it was focused on Covid and TTC. The first question was “are you pregnant right now?” I said yes and it booted me out.
@ellieemc26 I’m so jealous! My BIL used to live in Boulder and it was incredible (also incredibly expensive, which is why he moved back ) I would love to get a golden retriever and retire outside Denver.
I live outside Minneapolis, so we’ve had snow on and off for a month. Winter life!
I'm actually not sure what the advice will be for pregnant women on the vaccine, period. There have been a couple studies saying that there's higher risk of severe symptoms, but I also saw one the other week that said the opposite. If they don't prioritize pregnant women as high-risk, it may be non-issue for us: by the time it's distributed widely for everyone it may be June-ish anyway. I've been trying to figure out how they would test vaccine safety for pregnant women and can't find anything, just sites saying that the flu vaccine is safe.
@llamamamawearspajamapants I actually went to CU and lived in Boulder for years after! It is a great town but way too expensive for sure! We're lucky here that the snow doesn't really stick around in the city so it allows you to keep up on outdoor activities year round.
@akoros I think you're right about the high-risk category. I was looking at what information has been made public here for priority of distribution and I didn't see anything about pregnant women being in that group. I guess it could vary depending on where you live.
Reviving this thread Bc after consulting my OB, my physician friends, and multiple physician Facebook groups, I have opted to get the covid vaccine. First dose scheduled for 12/29.
@MelissaMay82 that was my original plan since I’m seeing patients 100% virtually. However, my daughter is in preschool (found out they’re no longer limiting her class size and no one told us. Yay), my husband is still at work, and my son is transitioning from virtual back to in person learning in January (thanks Florida 🙄).
immunity in pregnancy goes down and pregnancy with covid is considered high risk. That plus the very blunt and positive statement from SMFM (society of maternal fetal medicine) and talking to other physicians who understand this better than I do, finally convinced me there’s essentially no scientific way for this to affect baby negatively. So... 🤷🏻♀️Then afterwards I’m going to call the lines to be an extra data point. I’m ready to not have as much covid anxiety.
@angelz429 what did the SMFM say? I should talk to my OB about it but I honestly think I would have more anxiety about it effecting the baby than just the anxiety of covid (thanks PGAL brain). I’m an OR nurse and all our patients are tested prior to surgery so I feel pretty safe there (I’m actually more worried about my coworkers 😆). DH is all in healthcare and will get his vaccine soon (whither this up coming week or the week after).
@angelz429 I am happy to see you were able to come to this decision. I have another pregnant friend who has her first dose this month. I am set to talk with my OB at my next appointment on 1/6. As time has gone on I feel more and more comfortable taking it. The stress and anxiety of COVID and the risks while pregnant is overpowering me. I work in a hospital, my child is in daycare and my husband is also an essential worker who goes in to work every day. Our risk of exposure is relatively high as the cases continue to climb and general population is not yet eligible for the vaccine.
@angelz429 Thank you for going ahead and getting it and adding that data point to reassure other pregnant women! One of my best friends from college is a surgeon and is three weeks ahead of me with an IVF baby, and she's getting it the first week of January. She explained the science to me and how there is no possible risk to the fetus and now I'm super jealous I can't get it. I am way more afraid of contracting Covid (despite being super safe) so I would love to be able to remove that fear.

@angelz429 Thank you for sharing the link! When I've asked I've been told that it's not recommended right now (mostly because there's no proof is safe, which is frustrating). That said, I haven't pushed it too much as I'm probably going to be almost last in the queue anyway (full-time telework, no preexisting risk factors, relatively young, etc). At this point I figure my number would come up in the summer when I'm either almost due or no longer pregnant.
My job gives me a questionnaire to fill out and if you answer that you are pregnant you are not able to get the vaccine. I talked with my OB and she said as long as they are making accommodations to assign me non Covid patients then she wouldn’t want me to get it just yet. If that changes and I have to start caring for Covid patients then that advice will likely change. She said the risks of Covid outweigh the potential risks of the vaccine at this time.
This is definitely not proven or anything but she also told me that there has been a spike in autoimmune conditions in babies under one year and that something they’ve found in common with those cases was that the mothers had Covid during that pregnancy
long story short: if I feel more at risk I will get the vaccine.
I’ll keep y’all updated too. And obviously this wasn’t a rash decision. Took me a long time to come to the decision. But I feel good about it. Lots of other pregnant physician mamas getting the vaccine on my pages too.
@angelz429 I would do the same right now if I had the opportunity! I read more about the vaccine and how it differs from other vaccines and would feel comfortable getting it. So jealous of all my physician friends who have been posted pictures getting it this past week! I am a librarian teacher in a k-5 so hoping my number comes up before June. @sgrn18 the autoimmune stuff freaks me out. I've seen anecdotal articles/personal stories on my local FB (so totally not completely correlated... But still) about kids who had mild cases of covid but then were diagnosed with T1D. I didn't know that about babies of mother's who had it during pregnancy and that definitely makes me more interested in getting the vaccine.

My arm is slightly more sore than when I get the flu vaccine, but tolerable.
I had some nausea last night, but I’m also pregnant (obviously) and my nausea has been back after eating for some time 😞 so likely related to that instead of the vaccine.
Otherwise doing well! Will keep y’all updated, but I suspect I’ll be fine this time around, though hopefully I’ll mount an immune response next time (and likely will have symptoms then).
@_orchid_ thanks for asking. I feel like crap every day so I can’t really tell you if I’m having side effects, I have a headache but I’ve had daily headaches for over a week. The shot itself didn’t really hurt and my arm was pain-free for a few hours. Last night and this morning y arm felt like I got the Tdap but as the day goes on the pain is decreasing. I am concerned about the 2nd dose and the potential for high fevers so I may hold off on getting it.
@MelissaMay82 that a valid point about getting it while pregnant- hard to separate pregnancy crappiness from vaccine crappiness. Hope your headache improves!
I talked to my OB about it yesterday and she said she is now advising all her patients to get it as soon as possible so now I just have to find a place that has it, which is easier said then done

@legallykate I asked mine yesterday too and before I was even done asking the question she was telling me to get it. I'm supposed to be back in person with students in 2 weeks though so that might be part of it
I guess all places and drs are different. I talked to my dr the other day and he told me NOT to get it during this pregnancy after all I have been through to get this healthy baby, he doesn't want to risk it as there hasn't been enough information for it for studies in pregnant women. So it will be a while before I get my shot lol GL to all you ladies getting the vaccine. I hope all will be ok.
@mindyb2019 it probably depends on where you are/risk factors. Rate of transmission here is over 1, I'll be with kids, and I have the blood clotting issues already. I put my name on the county list, but I will see my high risk ob before my turn so I'll ask her too.
@angelz429 have anyone in your physicians mom group gotten the second dose yet? Has anyone had any high fevers? Did their OB’s give them a plan for what to do if fever develops after the second dose ) I know we can use Tylenol)?
I have a friend whose a nurse (not pregnant) who just got her second dose yesterday and as of today reported that it's kicking her butt. She said no fever but lots of chills, body aches, and very nauseous.
I also saw a past client of mine who is a L&D nurse, and also pregnant just a couple weeks behind me, who just got her first shot.
I plan to talk to my midwife about it at my next visit - and I did see where she just got her first dose recently. I guess what is crazy to me is if pregnant women are considered such high risk, why are we not being offered the vaccine along with other high-risk groups? Obviously we know there haven't been any trials on pregnant women, but they also have nothing excluding pregnant women from getting it. In my area it's still limited to healthcare and first responders, and those 75+. Essential workers and those over 50 are in the next group which I think starts shortly. I've been super torn on the vaccine. I was pretty firmly in the "no" camp...but at this point I'm so sick of all things Covid I am seriously considering it. I won't even watch Grey's anymore because the entire season is all things Covid and I'm just over it.
My OB office isn't letting partners come to any appointment, other than the 20w ultrasound. I can understand limiting exposure and not wanting excess people at EVERY appointment, but DH wasn't even allowed at my first dating ultrasound, which I'm pretty salty about. I feel like important things such as ultrasounds should be the exception. Meanwhile the constant inconsistency across the board in each area blows my mind. A friend just had her baby last month at our local hospital (not the one I deliver at) and she had to get a Covid test when she got here before her c-section, but her husband wasn't required to be tested (or even asked about it!).
@toesinthesand-2 in my area pregnant women are being prioritized so I am already eligible to get it as soon as I can find a place that has one. My husband isn’t even allowed at my anatomy scan so be glad yours is at that! I am pretty untrusting of how people have been acting during this pandemic so I am actually glad my practice is so strict. But I’m sure I’d be saltier if it was my first pregnancy and my husband hadn’t already had these experiences with me. I hope everyone will get the vaccine as soon as they can so this can get under control ASAP.

@legallykate that's nice your area has prioritized pregnant women. my area is similar to @toesinthesand-2, only hospital/medical, first responders, and people over 70 right now. On the current plan I'm not eligible until summer as it is. At least MH is prioritized as a teacher so he should be able to get it around the end of February based on their projections.
I'm glad it sounds like many of you at least have the option to get it, though!
@legallykate This is my second pregnancy, so he did get to participate in all the things the first go round - he's just super involved and likes to go. Unfortunately his work schedule means he will be out of town for my 20w ultrasound - so he won't get to go to any this time. Luckily we will schedule an elective one at the same place we did 3D for with our first...still it's disappointing he has to miss out. I'm impressed your are has prioritized pregnant women. Mine is still at only those who are 75+...they haven't even opened it up to those who are considered essential workers yet. I do see an OB practice that is out of my area, so hopefully my visit this upcoming week they might have more info or connections on getting in for the vaccine somewhere.
My state is currently vaccinating health care workers, first responders (fire and EMTs/paramedics, I’m not sure if police are included in this group), and nursing home/LTC staff and residents.
@toesinthesand-2 my area is also not allowing partners to any appointments. DH came to every appt with my other kids, and those pregnancies were pretty easy. This time I'm high(er) risk and have had a hard time going into the appts myself- not only nervous about something being wrong, but there is so much information thrown at me it's overwhelming. I really miss having another set of ears to hear things.
They do the same things with the delivering moms/dads in my area and I just assumed it's in case something goes south during delivery and the moms need more intense medical intervention, so that staff knows to really ppe up.
In my physicians group, they’re taking Tylenol. Myalgias and fever and just plain icky feeling from hour 10 (after vaccine number 2) to hour 24-36. Gone by then. Some not having any symptoms though too.

for what anecdotal evidence is worth, I’m in a physician moms to be fb group and they’re all doing beautifully and wonderfully with the vaccine.
no scientific way for this vaccine to hurt baby, which puts a lot of my initial hesitancy fears at bay.
