How was your appointment? What'd they do? Feel free to ask any questions - either leading up to your appointment about what to expect or after your appointment.
I had a phone appointment today in between my last appointment on 8/31 and my next one on 9/23. I was informed that my due date changed AGAIN! Now it's April 10. haha. I'm just going to assume from here on out my baby will come some time in April haha.
She just did a lot of "intake" kind of stuff - it seems like it was supposed to be more informative about pregnancy and dos and donts etc. I scheduled my next appointment, my blood work, my first trimester scan (already had two in office ultrasounds but this is at the hospital instead) and my 20 week anatomy scan.
They seemed again today to try to steer me away from doing NIPT (saying it wasn't necessary since I don't have any risk factors) which seems odd to me. What's the harm? I'd rather just pay out of pocket and do NIPT as early as possible.
@theblondebump I also had an intake appointment today - sounds pretty similar to yours. It's funny they're trying to steer you away from NIPT. I think my office assumes I'm going to want it and then is surprised that I don't (but they don't push it at all). I wonder if they've had people get upset if it wasn't covered by insurance. It can be $$$ if they don't have a relationship with a company that gives a discount (like thousands). But it's so prevalent now. My OB's office can get it for me for less than $400 since it won't be covered (I'll be 32 at delivery) and i know some others who got it for $100 or $200 last pregnancy. I also think that a lot of people do the NIPT ONLY to find out the sex of the baby which is not the purpose, just a side benefit (if you want to find out) that some practitioners kind of "poo poo" if they're assuming that's the main reason you want it (but I think you might have said you're team green). Although I have heard some insurances don't cover the sex even if they cover NIPT.
First ultrasound today. Pregnancy confirmed! Baby is measuring exactly as expected for 8w4d. So due date stands at April 16. Though I definitely feel pregnant (nauseous and exhausted), this was all a relief to see. I'm 38 this time around and have been a little nervous.
Yes, that all makes sense @kvh22 ! I told them I was fine paying out of pocket and also told them that we didn't want to know the sex (you remembered correctly about team green!), but they seemed to think we should just do a routine sequential screening and see how that goes before doing NIPT. To me, it just seems silly to wait because god forbid something came back in the screening and then we had to do the NIPT anyway, I'd be a nervous wreck waiting to do the NIPT and further time would pass in case we needed to make a tough decision and I'd rather just find out ASAP if anything was wrong! Granted it would be covered by insurance if there was a red flag on the routine screening, but I have heard from others the same that you said - it can be as little as like $200 or $300 and I'd much rather just pay that and have the peace of mind ASAP!
DH and I did carrier screens prior to conceiving, we like to have ALL the information possible haha.
I had a phone intake appointment today and found out I actually get an early ultrasound this time because I’m AMA (35 🙄). So that’s cool! With DD and DS, I couldn’t get an ultrasound until like 14 weeks or so. I’m excited that being AMA possibly will mean my insurance will cover some additional early testing so I don’t have to wait until 20 weeks to find out sex too! They are calling me back to schedule that US, but said it will be between 8-9 weeks, so that’s literally this week or next so I’m looking forward to that.
But also the stupid nurse already pissed me off about weight gain and basically shamed me for what weight I have gained already. Cool, thanks, like I didn’t already feel shitty about it...
I had my dating ultrasound today! All went well... saw the little flicker of a heartbeat which just never gets old. And just one baby's! I'm actually due May 4th (I thought April 30th or May 1st) but going back and looking at my dates May 4th does make sense. Hope you all dont mind me sticking around here! My other 3 were 37 weekers due to cholestasis of pregnancy and this one likely will be too which would be an April baby. But I'll def be the furthest behind on everything 😆
@theblondebump do you mind me asking if carrier screening was covered through insurance? I talked to my GP before trying to get pregnant (she did my pap so I never had an OB until I was pregnant) and she never recommended it. It would have saved us (me) a lot of worrying for 2 weeks waiting to find out DH wasn't a Cystic Fibrosis carrier since I was but found out at 8 or 9 weeks along. I think I mentioned my sister is also a CF carrier but insurance only covered it since she's of child bearing age and I was positive. The NP actually said the carrier screening (which they do every pregnancy - so I'll get it a 3rd time but it's fully covered) is essentially the same as what 23&me offers which I thought was funny. I'd assumed they'd test for more things. There's an advanced carrier screening I can do for another almost $400 separate from the NIPT. I am somewhat of a data junky but none of my friends got pregnant before me (even though I was 27 with my first pregnancy) so I very much just didn't know what I didn't know. And the NIPT would have been thousands for me since they didn't offer the discount the first time. I don't *think* I'm taking this for granted but after 2 healthy pregnancies/babies I'm comfortable without it since I'm low risk and the worst genetic family history I have is diabetes and high cholesterol. I think you might be able to just go straight to the companies that offer NIPT (panorama sticks out in my mind) to get the discount. If you go through your doctor they might automatically run it through your insurance - just make sure you check that out b/c I think I saw someone on TB way back when have an issue with that i.e. if they'd gone to the company it woudl have been cheap but since their office ordered it and insurance didn't cover it they were on the hook for the $$$$$.
@kvh22 DS3 had his newborn screen come back for CF. He had to get the test done and determined he was just a carrier. We decided to get testing done before considering a 4th baby. Insurance told me it was not covered when I called even given our circumstances. That said, we had met our out of pocket max for the year and never received any billing for it so maybe something changed when it went through? Either way... I so know that stress! It was agony waiting to see if DS3 had it.
@runsoncoffee YES we’ll keep you!! Haha seriously tho, don’t leave us!! And yayyy for that little HB 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Oh and get ready for all the “May The 4th“ puns when you tell people your due date!! Our #2 baby was due on 4/20 🙄😆
@theblondebump they’re keeping you on your toes with the changing due dates 😂
@juliebird6 BOO on that nurse! Not okay! My OB’s office has a sub-par nurse (imo haha) and I always try to avoid her. She works alternating days with another one & my goal this time around is to schedule my appointments on the days she’s not in!! Yay for the extra perks due to your crazy old age 😂😂😂 (Jk of course!!!!)
For those of you doing the NIPT, will you also do nuchal translucency scans, or just one or the other?
The US tech that did my NT scan with DD told me that since i did NIPT, it didn't need to do NT scan... but i also got to have a sit down with the MFM doctor who i love, so i kind of want to do it just to get a one on one with him to discuss my chances of pre-E.
@cagncoo12 yes, apparently they will do the NT scan and the NIPT at the same appointment between 12 and 13 weeks. I suppose I could do the NIPT sooner but I will likely just do them both at the same time.
@kvh22 DH's family is in the fertility business so we actually were able to just do the carrier screens that way. Not sure if insurance would have covered it, but something tells me probably not.
@runsoncoffee of course you should stay here! in too deep now to switch boards
@theblondebump that’s so weird they changed your due date with a phone appointment. I forget what it was but if they moved it back I’d be fighting to get it put back for maternity leave. Last time my due date was pushed back two weeks, then DS was 2.5 weeks early so I was pissed about missing out on my maternity leave. I’m still bitter and he’s almost 4. I had a weird appointment this week, not really for this pregnancy at all. We did IVF and due to a chromosome abnormality in my son that we learned my husband carries we had genetic testing done on the embryos. Out of our 7 eggs 4 were affected and we had to sign this week for their... I don’t know the term but basically disposal. It was a really emotional moment for me and made me really appreciate that it “finally worked”.
My next actual appointment is Friday and I think it’s my last before I need to transfer to a regular obgyn. I still haven’t heard if the doctor I wanted is going to accept me so kind of still worried about that.
oooh that makes total sense @forevertired ! I hadn't thought about that. DH and I are self-employed so no formal maternity leave policies for me or else I might get annoyed with all the switching around! (this is the 3rd time it changed!) Sorry about your disposal, that sounds emotionally tough for sure Best of luck with your new OB accepting you!
@goldpolkadot DH was on video on my phone and asked the OB if she was sure there was only one. She wiggled it around a bit and was like "yup, just one." The girls also got to be on video and say "hi" which my OB loved. She delivered my first and LOVES red heads (have I mentioned they're both red heads?). I had to ask her not to say "B-A-B-Y" since we aren't telling DD1 yet (DD2 has no idea what's going on, obviously).
@kvh22 Awwww that's too sweet! And just one, ha!! Yea we're not telling the kids yet either - they can't keep anything to themselves lol. And LOVE that they are redheads! Both of them! Are they blue-eyed, too? My DH is a red head with blue eyes and our #2 baby got his red hair but my brown eyes so I feel like we messed up the genes somewhere haha. Brown genes are strong!
@goldpolkadot oh man, I find genetics so interesting. They both have DH's brown eyes (mine are hazel). We actually had no idea there could be a chance our children could have red hair since there's NONE on his side (my sister and I both have red hair). We were so surprised when DD1 was born with a head full of red hair. Both of our brothers have blue eyes though so we thought there was a small chance of a blue eyed baby. I definitely have the blue recessive but neither of DH's parents have blue eyes so he might be double brown in which case all of our children will have brown eyes. DH has tan skin, brown eyes, and brown hair but both girls ended up with red hair and my fair skin (DD1 doesn't have any freckles at 3yo but DD2 is already getting some even though I'm a psycho with hats and sunscreen on her - I'm covered in freckles).
@goldpolkadot@kvh22 I agree, genetics are so interesting! MH is Indian, I am very fair with blue eyes. So all his genes will dominate mine lol. I'm holding out hope for blue eyed grandchildren someday.
Genetics is super interesting. My dad has blue eyes and my husband's mom has blue eyes. My husband is half Chinese and has very dark hair and eyes and I have hazel eyes. Our son has blue eyes!
My ultrasound went great, my appointment went good, except that they couldn't get a blood draw. The attempts at a blood draw was incredibly painful, I don't know what they did, but the phlebotomists were scared for me because I turned so white.
I'm not sure how far along I am now, ultrasound puts me at about 7 weeks, my ovulation date puts me at 8 weeks so we're splitting the difference and saying I'm 7 weeks 4 days? Which in the end doesn't make that much of a difference, I'm just trying to get out of the first trimester as quickly as possible. We saw a healthy heartbeat, but I'm still so nervous about this pregnancy.
I had all of my questions answered, so that was good! Apparently I've been handling my nausea all wrong. Crackers and carbs are bad, they just make your blood sugar spike which is a very temporary solution and makes you grab more in 30 minutes. Instead she recommended protein rich snacks like nuts, yogurt, string cheese, and apples with peanut butter. I'm already feeling so much better from swapping my snacks today.
Now I have to find a new doctor to see for my next appointment, it was so awkward to start at one hospital knowing I'm moving next week.
@thedomesticgeek I’m so glad you had a good appointment! Minus the blood draw attempts - that sounds awful 🥴 That’s interesting about the crackers - it makes sense! My previous pregnancies I was constantly reaching for crackers and pretzels, but this time nothing like that sounds appetizing. I’ve been craving protein!
@thedomesticgeek I *try* to do "no naked carbs" to prevent the blood sugar spike but sometimes the options are eat something palatable or throw up and a cracker still helps me. But yes, cheese, PB, nuts, etc. are my go tos to *try* to get in a bit more protein with the carbs. But for the most part, all I can look at is carbs.
Just had my ultrasound. I'm 7 weeks, 5 days (we know because it was IVF) but she said she measured 6 weeks 5 days with a heartbeat of 112. Problem is that baby is located farthest away from where the probe was (at the top of the uterus) so it was a very blurry picture and she had a hard time seeing. I have to go for another ultrasound in 2 weeks to confirm viability because of my history of miscarriages. I'm really worried.
I had my early ultrasound today! Just one baby, heart rate at 161. Everything looked good so that was nice. I’ve never had an early ultrasound before so it was interesting to see the difference between that and what’s done at the Nuchal translucency scan. I’m looking forward to my next appointment when I actually get to see my doctor and bring up some of my concerns about VBAC vs repeat CS but I don’t go back until 10/2. Feels like forever.
@the@thedomesticgeek glad you had a good appointment, minus that blood draw - that part sounds awful! It's great you're feeling better with the better protein, etc.! Apple + pb has been my go to snack this pregnancy, I can't believe how many apples I have eaten lol - big fan!
@peppylilfoxy I’m sorry your appointment didn’t help reassure you today. I hope your next appointment goes better and you get a nice clear image of a healthy baby.
I had my confirmation appointment yesterday. My due date was confirmed as I thought, April 17. The appointment went well. I didnt get to hear a heartbeat but we saw one on the ultrasound. My next appointment is in 4 weeks. My OB said we will listen for a heartbeat, do an exam and prenatal labs at that appointment.
@thedomesticgeek glad it was a good appt but ugh what a mess with the blood draw! My OB reminded me of the same thing today - I’m on a mission to eat better snacks...starting tomorrow 😂
@peppylilfoxy im so sorry the u/s wasn’t reassuring. Keep us updated!
@juliebird6 one baby!!! So glad everything looked good 🙌🏻
I had my confirmation sono today and there is only ONE baby 😂 (who will be first for multiples?!) but there IS a baby! What a crazy huge relief. I was literally holding my breath when he started. We heard the HB but I actually have no idea what it was. OB moved my due date back to 4/20 (instead of 4/15) (someone else has a 4/20 due date too, right?!) - and the crazy thing is, our #2 baby has the exact same due date 4 years ago! So anyway, now I’m back to only 8 weeks and change instead of 9&2 🤪 The doc told me twice that it looked like a “very healthy baby,” but for some reason that gave me pause afterwards and now I’m wondering what the HB was. Probably best that I can’t over-analyze. I go back in 2 weeks for the genetic/blood test & to check HB again.
My appts thus far have been a bit confusing and frustrating. I get an ultrasound at each appt and I’m seen every 3 weeks. (Is this normal? It wasn’t this way with my other two)
My first appt was on 8/13, I was 4+5 and it was really too early to see anything but EDD based on LMP was 4/17. My OBGYN pointed at two different areas and said it could be “this or this”, pointing at the screen, “but too early to be definite”. I was a too nervous to ask if it could be “there AND there” but my mom keeps telling me I’m having twins since she was one.🤷♀️ Then he had to run out for a mama having some problems.
The next appt on 9/2 at “7+4” but my OBGYN was all over the place with a mom in labor and ready to deliver any second (literally at 9cm when he catapulted into my room and told me to lay down quick because he had to leave). He did an ultrasound super fast, found the little bean, let me hear the heartbeat and then printed it with a EDD of 4/20 and me at 7+1. Since I didn’t get to talk to him or ask questions, I’m still going off the first due date based on my LMP but I’m confused. I’m also worried my eyes were playing tricks on me because I thought I saw him slide past another sac! My hubby isn’t allowed to go in with me so of course I feel crazy. I haven’t had any bloodwork yet either (is that normal?) and I’m also rh negative but can’t remember when that is supposed to be a factor to deal with (20 weeks?).
Needless to say I have a lot of questions, it’s been nearly 7 years since my son was born so I feel like it’s my first all over again. I also want to say I do love my OB, he delivered my son, and is usually just amazing but I’ve caught him on two terrible days it seems.
@thedomesticgeek I had no idea, I always grabbed crackers for morning sickness too! That would have been nice to know😅 I’m glad to hear your appt went well minus the blood draw part. Prayers for your nerves and a easy transition with the move!
@peppylilfoxy Sorry to hear your ultrasound left you wondering more than reassured. That’s difficult! Prayers the next one gives you the assurance you need
@kvh22 You are so knowledgeable and helpful with what you share! I’m soaking up all your great advice and wishing I had gotten on here sooner than just a few days ago.😆
@goldpolkadot I’m April 20 too. No appointment yet but that’s what the calculator says. Praying I’m not the multiples one. Secretly hoping someone else would have filled the multiple spot in April 21 by now so my odds would be better. Ha!!

@goldpolkadot I’m surprised no one in the group is having twins that we know of yet as well! What if April is just a singleton month for 2021 lol?
