Re: August Randoms

  • Agreed @mtengl no one should feel bad about sharing what other countries or their jobs are offering for mat leave!

@wychets November to April? #jealous! That's great! I love companies that offer good mat leave for moms. It' reassuring to hear that not everywhere in the US sucks lmao 🤣

@hedgepig wait.... Originally they offered males 2 days paternity leave, but mom's only got ONE day?! WTAF? Regardless 2 days is a slap in the face and that is some straight up BS.

Random tangent not mat leave related: @babywiik / other knitters, how the actual eff do you keep track of and do the Kitchener stitch?! 😵😑 I gave up and just made a seam lmao. I tried following the steps and doing it and omg it gave me a headache and it confused me and I kept losing track of where I was. I will resign myself to have seams 🤣😂

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts that looks like too much brain work for me! I have to keep it simple because the toddler likes to “help”
  • @lurvleybunchococonuts I've never actually heard of a Kitchener stitch so I had to look it up and I'll for sure be learning!! This video seemed to make sense but we'll see when I actually try it😅

  • @babywiik it certianly *seems* simple enough but try it out and my brain went "wait... What?!" Knit or purl, front or back, off or on, how do you keep track of where you are?! 😳😵 you feel free to master it and I'll mail you what needs to be done and then you mail it back to me 🤣 shipping to and from Norway is inexpensive and basically overnight delivery, right? ;) *being VERY sarcastic*

@mtengl YES! Anything I can't put down in the middle and pick up again is a no go. #seamsforlife

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts that is def a need to sit down and do in one sitting type thing....
  • @mtengl oh definitely! I. Theory it looks easy but nope nope nope lol

Ughhhh 😑😑😑 DD just pulled all three of my DPNs out of the hat I started last night 🤦🏻 oh well I wanted to do the next size up for a friend's son anyhow I suppose.

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts I have started doing the magic loop for hats. Of course I have one I just need to decrease on and it hasn’t happened...
  • @mtengl I've looked at how to do the magic loop and it seems easy enough! I do love my DPNs though. Depends on the project, for baby hats DPNs are easier for me but that first row no matter what the needles is always a beast 😑😩

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts I always hate the first row! I got into circular needles pretty early on, so I think I just got in the habit of using them. I have only been knitting for 4.5 years and it isn’t consistent.
  • @mtengl I understand, I do a lot of my flat knits on circular needles 😆 and then a lot of my circular knits on DPNs unless it's something bigger like an adult hat, then I'll use circular.

  • @lurvleybunchococonuts I seriously keep a sheet of paper and pen nearby and make tally marks. Otherwise, I'd go crossed-eyed a lot sooner than I, inevitably, do.
  • So I feel pretty big already but I keep telling myself this is the second time. Since I am larger already I think this kid just has a ton of room. She migrates throughout, with DD I felt like she was squished in there.
  • @bserena congratulations!!!!! It looks super cute from the outside and I love the blue door!!
  • @bserena congrats!! I also love the door!
  • @mtengl @dumbledoredies thank you!! The door is my favorite thing 😂 it made me love the house when we first saw it!
  • @bserena Awesome news! Congratulations!!
  • @bserena congratulations!! it looks lovely!
  • @bserena congrats on closing!!

Crazy to hear all the differences in maternity leaves. I'm a teacher (US) and I have to use my sick days if I want to have a paid leave.

I see there's a fair amount of knitters! I'm a crocheter-- does anyone else crochet? I made a few baby hats during 1st tri and have been thinking about starting a blanket, if I can find a quick pattern to work up... (sorry if this has already been discussed... I just returned to 80 new messages on this thread! We're so active and I struggle to keep up!)
  • @bserena YAY! Congrats!

@warmwinter I crochet as well as knit. I'm just on a knitting kick at the moment because I like the tighter stitches. But for things like a blanket crochet is the way to go!!!

  • @warmwinter I crochet! I made some hats for #1, but nothing for this babe 😬 I didn't have to fool with blankets bc I got so many as gifts (homemade).
  • @dumbledoredies you get to seriously nest!! I just had a former coworker move this week and she is due this month!!

@warmwinter I was just looking at patterns and a lot of yarn companies do offer free patterns a lot of them are baby blankets... I only knit but wish I crocheted for blankets, knitting blankets takes forever. I am working on baby hats and toddler hats right now. Like @teachingbp I had a lot of blankets and quilts gifted to me that were hand made.
  • re: maternity leave - I can take the 12 weeks of FMLA and with my two girls worked up until the day I went in to labor so I didn't "waste" any time before they were born. I get paid for whatever my dr writes as my short term disability (8 weeks for my first and 6 weeks for my second) and the rest is all unpaid. US maternity leave sucks.

  • @dumbledoredies congrats on getting all moved in!! 😊
  • @bserena congratulations on the house. The color of your door looks the same color as our front door! Love it.

@dumbledoredies congratulations on the move! I hope the unpacking goes well.

    @dumbledoredies and @bserena congratulations!

Knitting is on my “Pick back up” craft list. We had a knitting group at my job a few years ago and I have an unfinished Christmas stocking and an unfinished shawl I keep wanting to finish 🤦‍♀️
  • @windywoman  I go through spells with it. Weeks without picking up even months and then I will work on it several times a week. Working on baby hats right now and I just ordered yarn for a Christmas stocking for this baby since DD, H and myself have one that I have made.
  • @bserena Congratulations on the first house!!! DH and I bought our first house back in April/May and it seriously makes you feel so good! I'm so excited for you guys!
Also, @dumbledoredies congratulations to y'all for the move! Moving is never any fun in my opinion, but I think that's because I take so long to go through stuff lol Hope unpacking goes well!!!

All this knitting and crocheting talk makes me feel really un-crafty. I don't have any talents like that - I can do one of those tie blankets! LOL

  • @lovelee3 Knitting/crocheting for basic stuff is more of a skill you can learn. I don't do anything crazy yeah I don't see it as a talent at all but I know some who are super talented.
  • @kelk5 That sounds SO cute! We love Daniel Tiger! Also, I completely understand. I can't get a straight line using a sewing machine and it seems like that shouldn't be too difficult but I just can't! 🤷‍♀️
  • @acdc1109 I know right? It seems like it should be relatively easy because they have lines to line up the fabric but nope, really difficult.
  • I've tried knitting and could never really get the hang of it. I love to crossstitch and embroider though. I made a personalized stocking for DH and have this baby's done as well, except for the name, obviously. I also have a massive crossstitch piece that has tiny stitches and I'm about 5 years in and a bit over halfway done. But as I always prefer the actual stitching to the finishing work (I have SO many completed pieces just folded up because I haven't got around to framing or making pillows for them), these super long projects are just up my alley.
  • @krystrist2014 Your hubby gets 16 weeks full pay paternity leave?!?!? That is crazy awesome. I was excited my husband gets 2 weeks paid paternity.
