Cramping/Bleeding/Spotting support

EDIT: I wanted to change this to a board that others can utilize even after I'm out.
This space is for anyone experiencing any spotting, cramping or anxiety around this pregnancy, as well as general support for anyone needing to post here.  Trigger warnings are not necessary as it assumed that spotting/cramping/potential loss will be discussed here.

Original Post:
After lots of achy cramping this morning, I started to bleed. I've estimated to be about 4+2 today, and got the BFP pretty early at 3+6. There are a few questions I'd like to ask for anyone with similar experiences.

My first pregnancy is 2014 ended in a miscarriage somewhere between 5 and 6 weeks. I went on to get pregnant a month after that with my now 5 year old son and had another healthy live birth in 2018. Here I am having another chemical pregnancy. So, my questions are:

Has anyone had more than 1 chemical pregnancy separated by live births?

Do I need to call the dr and explain or be seen? I think most people who have miscarriages this early never even know they are pregnant and go on as normal thinking they just had a late period...

Thanks ladies and good luck to you all!

Re: Cramping/Bleeding/Spotting support

  • Oh no I'm so sorry!!! i would let your doctor know, they may want to do some bloodwork or other work up. Not all bleeding automatically means a loss, but definitely if it is just like a period I would let the doctor know.  Please be kind to yourself, sending you lots of love <3

  • I’m so sorry to hear @mrs_massie. I fear I may be joining you in the loss department. I’m 4+1 today and woke up with bleeding. Not as much as a period but a couple of wipes worth. I also took another pregnancy test hoping the line would look darker (I had a very faint positive at 3+5) and the line is still very faint. I’ve been cramping all week which I expected meant I was getting my period but it never came and I got the positive test. I have an appointment with my MFM on Monday so I will likely wait it out until then but I’m feeling really anxious and sad.
  • @jenn622-2 Oh no!!! I hope the bleeding stops and stays away.  3+5 and 4+1 isn't a long time, sometimes the pee sticks don't get super dark.  I hope Monday comes quick for you!!! FX!!

  • Thanks everyone. Unfortunately, the bleeding and cramping got worse. I called my doctor and he recommended I go to the ER where they did blood work and an ultrasound and determined I was likely having a miscarriage. I have a follow up appointment on Monday to confirm but based on what they saw a miscarriage is most likely. I hope you all have healthy,  happy babies and deliveries ❤️
  • @jenn622-2 I'm so sorry, big hugs
  • So sorry. Thinking and praying for you both. Sending lots of baby dust

  • Anyone experience coffee ground like spotting/brown spotting around 6 weeks. This will be my 4th day of spotting. no cramming
  • I am 6 weeks tomorrow and have been spotting a few days, I’m starting to cramp and have more blood though.
  • @jmalchow123 @Preppytraveler How are you all doing? Hoping all is well. I had two days of super light brown 'spotting' first thing in the morning, just when I wiped. It's all gone now and I don't think it's anything to worry about, but definitely stressed me out a bit.
  • I'm so sad to hear about all your losses. I'm so sorry and I wish you all a fast recovery, emotionally and physically. And to those waiting to find out, I hope everything is okay.
  • Had some light cramping this afternoon and then noticed some bright red blood. Not sure if I should call my after hours OB line, are they just going to suggest an emergency room visit? I have my first OB appt scheduled on Monday..
  • @ckmb_1250 I would call the after hours OB line- they might just give you some guidelines in regards to what to watch for and when to go in, if needed. At least then you'll have more info ❤️
  • I have been experiencing some very very slight brownish spotting after I pee. Where I’m not exactly sure if it’s a trick of the light, or real. And it’s not every time I pee, once every other day or so (out of the 30 times I go pee a day now.) Today, however, there was a significant amount on the toilet paper. It was mostly brown, with some darkish pink streaks. I’m not camping. No dizziness or discomfort. I’m trying not to freak out because I know if it’s bad, there will be cramping.

With my first, right around 7 weeks I started bleeding bright red blood, out of nowhere. A lot of it too. I had to wear pads for 3 or 4 days until it died down, and change them every couple hours. Everything was fine. Please, let everything be fine again.

I hope everything is okay! Dark brown seems like a good sign because it’s not new blood.

I had a vaginal ultrasound on Monday at 6w3d and saw the heartbeat and everything looked good. I started bleeding bright red blood yesterday morning. It’s mostly stopped but I continue to spot. I’m going back in tomorrow. Hearing that everything was fine for you then makes me feel so much better!
  • Keeping my fingers crossed for all of us!
  • I hate that we're all on this board. Yesterday I was fine all day and went to the bathroom around 230, and there was blood. It looked like period blood so mostly brownish red, but there was quite a bit. I called the OB's office and got a call back from the on-call who said it's probably implantation (I'm 8w6d today) and that it may not be anything to worry about but if I wanted to go into the ER for an ultrasound, she didn't see the harm in that. We went in (so glad the ER is letting us have support people) and eventually did have an ultrasound and my husband and the doctor could see the heartbeat but from my angle I couldn't be 100% sure I saw it. I'm trusting them. Then they wanted to test me for a UTI so we waited...in the hour it took for them to get the results, I bled enough to soak through my underwear and ruin my light teal shorts. Since then it's been mostly spotting and mild "is this cramping or do I have to pee" kind of cramps. I've been wearing a pad to be able to see if anything shows up on my underwear but it's mostly residual brown. @jmalchow123 It's kinda like how you described it at this point. Coffee grounds. I use vaginal progesterone suppositories so that's likely what I'm seeing at this point. I'm on couch rest for the weekend. Trying to decide if I'm going to take tomorrow off and go to the OB for another heartbeat check or if I'm going to go in to work. This is supposed to be my last week in the office before starting teleworking but I don't know now. I'm having a hard time trusting this pregnancy. I've had 2 miscarriages in the past.
  • It was kind of a wild weekend over here. I saw some spotting during my morning and evening progesterone on Friday (cue my freakout), everything had kind of settled down, then on Saturday afternoon while I was packing a box of random crap to go to the thrift store for donation, I felt a small gush. I went to the bathroom and my liner was a watery bright red. I freaked out again, yelled for MH, and immediately laid down and started hydrating. I called my RE emergency line, talked to a doctor, and he said to monitor it and call back if it kept going. Luckily, it never filled the liner and I was not seeing spotting on Sunday. I basically stayed in bed watching Miss Fisher all weekend. I also woke up several times during the night to check on things, so now I'm completely exhausted today. 4 more days until ultrasound. :#

  • @kloe818 I'm so sorry, that sounds awful. Are you going in to the OB today? Have you graduated from your RE yet?

  • @mvt2003 I graduated to the OB last week. I had an ultrasound last week on Monday with the RE, Thursday with my OB, and Saturday with the ER. I did call and check in with the OB's nurse who said that she got all the reports from the ER visit (same hospital) and everything looked OK. Blood work etc. I already have an appointment for a heartbeat check next week so I am going to hold off. Today's emotions are far better than over the weekend. I did spend the day home though so I could relax some more. OB's office did say that couch rest was probably an ok idea but not needed. No exercise, but no need to lay around since that could cause blood to pool again. They think it might be a subchorionic hematoma which I had with my last pregnancy and is pretty common with IVF pregnancies, but the RE didn't see one so I don't know where it would have come from. The fact that it was "old blood" and not bright red was reassuring enough to the professionals that I'm reasonably OK with everything. Also, I know my body enough to know that my miscarriages don't start with blood, they start with lack of symptoms and I still have symptoms. I'm trying to trust my body right now.
  • Spotting update... after about 4 days of light brown and pink spotting, it stopped for a few days. Last night it came back, very red and a lot of it. I just called the on call ob and she said to take it easy this weekend, as long as there isn’t cramps and I’m not soaking through pads, to call on Monday and see if they can squeeze me in for an ultrasound. I’m trying not to freak out. I bled with my son and we were okay. I’m bleeding now and we’ll be okay. I have to keep telling myself that. We’ll be okay.
  • @Liz1485 - Stay positive! It was okay in your previous pregnancy, it'll be okay for this one. Sending virtual hugs.

  • Another update. The blood picked up yesterday. The cramping started about 2 hours ago and has gotten significantly worse. When I sit on the toilet there’s a steady drip of blood. I’ll be calling my ob first thing in the morning, but with this pain, it’s hard to imagine I’ll get any good news. The cramps are now as bad or worse than my roughest period days, after only 2 hours. I’ll update again as soon as I know more. Thank you for all your kind words.
  • Graphic warning. I’m not shy about bodily functions.

Final update. About 10 minutes after I posted that, my cramps eased, then stopped. I waited another 10 minutes to be sure before heading to bed. When I stood up, I felt the first clump fall into my pad. It was about the size of 3 of my fingers side by side. As soon as I sat on the toilet, I felt the second clump fall, a little bigger than the first. I started bawling because obviously this is it. There’s been a couple more smaller clumps fall, and I’m staying on the toilet for a few minutes to make sure it’s over before I try to go back to bed. Towards the end, it felt more like contractions than cramps. It came in waves and lasted about 3 minutes, every 3 or 4 minutes. I had the strange thought that it was the same process as giving birth, and since the “contractions” were so close together, I must be getting close. Then the pain stopped and I guess I was right.

Good luck to all you ladies. I hope you all have healthy pregnancies and happy babies.
  • @Liz1485 I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending love and virtual hugs.
