I have reached out to my district about doing online but I am still torn but I hate to be selfish. I will wait to see what their final decision in once they figure out how many student are doing online and how many teachers they need. My husband works from home so we could technically keep my son home but he would not be able to work on school until later but I did find out we can start him in person and if we feel uncomfortable at any time we can pull him to online. I’ve never felt more stressed or torn in my life.
Still waiting on so many answers. And @s@shelmcclel is this a public school she works at?? That is very shocking and hopefully she has a teachers union who can fight that tenure issue. Ohio is definitely not doing that to their teachers. We have to have some to cover those who need it online.
We are really lucky to be in a position where our boys aren't old enough to be in regular school (one is in Preschool) and that I have been a SAHM for a couple years already. I can't imagine how difficult it is trying to navigate how to send kids back to school or having to decided if/how to go back to teaching.
Right now our biggest issue is acknowledging that 4yo will likely not restart Preschool in the fall. He loves school, and it is so good for him, but he has a congenital heart condition which makes him high risk.
We had already talked a lot about homeschooling for elementary and possibly beyond, so we would just start sooner. The logistics are fairly easy for us, which is an absolute blessing.
I'm just heartbroken over his little social life. He had best friends at school that he doesn't even talk about anymore. He has cousins he's very close to. Since March we have stayed home and limited visits because his cousins are all school age or attend daycare. Everything from weekly playtime at a cousin's house and Chick-fil-A dates and to his birthday party have been cancelled for months.
I just don't know how all of this will effect him long term, and I have no idea what else to do for him.
@mom_of_the_vogels my two younger are going into preschool and preK and I honestly still don’t know what to do. We have the capability of keeping them home but I fear they won’t get the same quality education and the social aspect. Definitely a very difficult decision.
Our governor finally put a mask order in place, effective today, but the state AG has openly questioned his authority to do so. Either way, I had to go to the grocery store today and it was super comforting to see everyone wearing some kind of face covering. Before this we were lucky to see 25% of customers wearing them at most places. This feels like a huge step in the right direction.
@mom_of_the_vogels I’m so glad the governor did this. Hopefully it will make a difference and people will see that it’s not that hard. A little hot at first but also fine.
People have been pretty good with masks here in Minneapolis but I’m not sure about the rest of MInnesota. Its been way more relaxing going to the grocery store since Minneapolis got it’s mandate, before that it was about 50% of shoppers at regular stores. I liked going to the middle eastern grocery because most people they’re had masks and Trader Joe’s because they only let so many people in at once and require masks.
Masks have been a requirement since the whole pandemic started here in Northern California. Pretty sure that’s what’s helped slow the spread here. Crazy how different it is just in Southern CA. I haven’t seen anybody’s face since beginning of March!

@bearmomma1. The not seeing faces is kinda weird. There are six different midwives that can deliver our baby and we have met three. I am pretty good at remembering faces, but not names. All the I remember now is two brunettes and a blonde. It is also weird to get facial expressions when all you see are eyes. Like I meant that as a playful comment, but it could be considered harsh and you are missing my mischievous grin for context.
@dobiemom11 haha yes you have to 'extra cheesy grin your eyes' and laugh just a few decibels higher to successfully achieve that playful comment behind a mask

@dreamscapes_ and @hham10 I also wish our governor would mandate something. Here in MO, the governor says it’s up to the municipality, and even though the rest of our surrounding area has a mandate, our county says it is up to the individual business and is “requesting” that they require it. Which is why our county is rising faster than the other ones. Sigh. This is not about individual liberty, it’s about the health of everyone! If we can mandate seat belts, why can’t we mandate masks during a pandemic???
@hham10 He’s pushed blame off of himself for everything over the last four months, from our broken unemployment system to infection rates. It’s absolutely ridiculous. Some counties (including the two we mainly deal with) have issued mandates, but it’s not statewide.
@dreamscapes_ our two counties in FL - Hillsborough (where we live) and Pinellas (where my husband works) have mask mandates, also the cities of Tampa and St Pete have separate ones as well, but we were down in Bradenton last week where there is not a county mask order and it was like the wild west!!
@shelmcclel yeah, we live in Orange and technically work in Osceola. So thankfully most of the places we go have the county orders. It bugs me so much, though, when I see people with their noses uncovered or the mask down around their chins.
I’m totally late about the school talk but I’m also a teacher and I’m a bit nervous. I miss my kids so much (we loop for two years so I have some returning this year) but I’m so on the fence. I want to see my little guys but I’m afraid parents will want to get back to work as we all do and not follow all the guidelines.
@jbal918 I feel you. I don’t know what school will do but I Think our governor said masks for all provided by the state. (I’m at a private school so 🤷♀️But I assume masks). I wish we could tell everyone to be extra careful /quarantine for 2 weeks before school but that’s basically impossible. Especially with Labor Day right before school.
@jbal918@autumn87654321 I am also a teacher and nervous but happy we will be going back...I think. Yup, unsure about it all but I also need the $ and insurance and teaching from home is not ideal, especially with 2 toddlers...
@autumn87654321 and @hadassah2020 It’s so hard to figure out! It wasn’t easy by any means with DS running around while I’m trying to teach virtually but DS has been hospitalized twice for breathing issues so I’m so worried for him.
@jbal918@hadassah2020 my school just send out some email about what is different. It barely sounds like anything. Except the staff has to have our temp taken daily in the office which which sounds stupid of the students just do it at home. I’m the art teacher and have to see ALL of the students every week. And probably go from room to room instead of them coming to me which sounds awful. And also does t make it any better for my health. I at least have an exhaust fan in my classroom for the kiln that I can turn on
@hadassah2020 I am starting to feel note excited now to go back because my mental health is definitely taking a major hit at home 24/7 since March with a now 6, 4, and 3 year old. I’m still nervous but made the decision I will be going back.
Our school will be 5 days with a lot of social distancing and a jail like feel to be honest. But we’ll do the best we can. Teachers will be required to take student temps 2x/day. I will probably add a 3rd at the end of the day for those who medicated their kids and it should be worn off by then.
@jbal918@hham10@autumn87654321 I'm nervous but need to be back. We were able to have a great last week with our grad 8s from last year and it was awesome to see them all again. Social distancing smaller attendance and everything but so good to send off my students to high school somewhat properly. I'm going back but haven't heard anything from my school yet. The province just came out with their back to school plan for full time with lots of interesting guidelines but I'm in a private school so we still have some decisions to make. Hoping to hear soon but we also don't start until Sept.
I can’t believe that this is still even going on. It’s like a twilight zone! I was hoping to be normal by September but that definitely won’t be happening!
@hham10 that's crazy! We were just informed officially we will be going back 5 days a week, all students every day. My class is a class of 24 as far as I'm aware and we use tables...
@hadassah2020 wow! So is there no remote option for students at your private school?? Any requirements you have to follow? Our students all have to be socially distanced at their own desks facing forward etc. we have at least 13 2nd graders that will be working virtually.
@hham10@hadassah2020 it’s all such a weird mess. I hope your admin is considering you and your baby’s health.
I wrote a semi frantic email to my principal after they sent out the non-plan (and I cried for about 40 minutes about it ) The email seemed helpful. (I think if there is still room for flexibility the school administration has a bit of an obligation prioritize our safety and that of our unborn children. )
Principal responded to my email today, understood my concerns and the greater risk of pregnancy in this situation, there is some flexibility so she’ll come up with a plan for Art and let me know.
I’d feel better if it was just the same group of 20ish students a week but regularly I see 300(k-8th grade) students throughout the week. The numbers here are pretty low-ish. But After Labor Day celebrations and school starting it’s just so much risk.
Our schools here in Portland are staying virtual at least through first quarter and very likely through the holiday break. I’m so appreciative of the extra caution and think it’s absolutely the right call, but I also realize I’m lucky because our kids are older and can self manage themselves.
I also teach online classes for a summer camp / outdoor school and they’ve been doing outdoor programming all summer. They’ll be doing outdoor school in the fall as well. I wish more places would adapt an outdoor school model in the early fall at least!
@laurenspdx you’re lucky! I wish I lived in Portland again! (I grew up there in SE Hawthorne area) I have a friend who sends her kids to Trackers school which seems awesome. I think it will be virtual at first but then just all outside like they usually are which seems ideal Hopefully before this little guy I’m growing turns school age I’ll be able to move back to he close to my family and send the kid to school there or something.
@hham10 no, no online option for us. We are funded entirely by tuition and don't want to make it completely unaffordable. Small private Christian school and I love teaching there. We were told to expect more information in the next few weeks to see what the classroom set ups will be like and what the safety protocols will be. @autumn87654321 I don't think that's even a thought yet at this point about me and baby.
@autumn87654321 Totally! There’s a pretty small group of kids doing online camps this summer so we very well may have crossed paths if they’ve done any. Small world 😊
So our school district voted last Thursday to open on Aug 24 and for the first 4 weeks as online only. They would then reevaluate on continuing e-learning or opening for brick & mortar. The next day our governor (DeSantis the Trump puppet who ran as basically a mini-Trump) and Comissioner of Education said our school board’s decision was illegal. If they do not come up with a plan by this Friday to reopen by offering in person instruction 5-days a week our county will lose state funding.
A teacher’s association is suing the governor, and the state, and I hope our school board will too. My friend who is a teacher here said her school shut down and sent everyone home today after two teachers tested positive after only 1 week of only teachers and staff being back. My friend was in contact with the teachers who tested + and got a rapid test (she paid out of her pocket) and was negative thank god, but I’m worried!
@shelmcclel oh geeze. I’m sorry your governor is a big turd! Maybe some teachers can be online some in person for people who can’t afford having their kids home?
I talked to my midwife today about going back to school. She said masks are working pretty well, and they’re just finishing up a study through the u of M supporting that.
I’m feeling a little better about returning to school after talking to her but Minnesota doesn’t have as many cases as Florida. I think I’d still be freaked out if numbers were high like that. I have a friend living in Miami who does not want to send her kid back to school. He did a week at preschool recently and then she stopped sending him.
I hope it works out for you. This is such a giant shit show! Not good for our pregnancy moods and what’s supposed to be our happy energized trimester!
@shelmcclel ugh, I hate that guy. Desantis needs to go back to whatever rock he crawled out from under. He’s done so much damage to the state through inaction these last few months 😒
I’m so sorry to those of you in Florida. I just cannot believe they’re acting like that when cases are still so completely out of control. Your governor sounds like a total tool.
I was told Friday I would be teaching remote starting August 24th. While I know this is the healthy option for baby boy and I, I can’t say im not a little disappointed and freaking the hell out! We know absolutely nothing about what we are doing virtually and it’s a shit show here. Wouldn’t be surprised if we end up all remote as many of the surrounding counties and district are heading that way.
Anyone else getting to the point where the mask is too hot and hard to breathe in from shortness of breath depending on where baby is situated? I feel like over night I stopped comfortably breathing in these bad boys!
@jacmkelley I have that sometimes. More often I start feeling nauseated and have to find a place I can stay away from people and take it off for a minute. I'm all for wearing masks but sometimes it's just rough.
