S+TM Checkin (Second Time Mom ... onward)

Re: S+TM Checkin (Second Time Mom ... onward)

  • @hedgepig my symptoms are a lot different this time around. With my first, I had some slight nausea but never threw up, and I wasn't as tired. This time I am nauseous all the time, and have thrown up way more than I'd like! Also this time around I'm having really bad reflux starting out, and with my first I didn't get it until the 3rd trimester. I am slightly older now so I'm chalking it up to that lol

  • @hedgepig my first pregnancy I had pretty mild symptoms, the main ones I remember were breast tenderness, gas and a little nausea plus the stretchy cramps. My second pregnancy had worse nausea but still not too bad, no breast tenderness or cramps, fatigue. This time around I have alll the symptoms, lol. The worst nausea so far
(I never actually vomited with the other two and I have vomited just about every day this time), gas, cramping/stretching, fatigue, sore boobies, dizziness...ugh!
  • This is our fourth. I swear I had this down pat. Nope. Added insomnia, super strong nausea, ridiculous cravings (spaghetti and kimchi anyone?), all the things. It’s been particularly rough.
  • STM here. My son is 3 and will be almost 4 when this baby comes. I Saved all my maternity stuff and luckily the seasons match up so I can rewear them. I really want some good maternity leggings since it’s what I wore basically every day last time. Anyone have some favorites? I’ve been looking at Beyond Yoga and Nordstrom’s brand Zella.

Fourth time mom here!  This will be my second geriatric pregnancy as I am now 39 and was 35 when my last DD was born. When this little bean arrives we will have an 8, 6, and 4 year old (one boy and two girls).

About two months ago I donated all of my maternity clothes after holding on to them for 4 years "just in case".  I bought those clothes at Target and Motherhood Maternity.  I'll need to go  shopping:).
  • @surlyjaneausten I did leggings from BLANQI, Target and Walmart...honestly the Walmart ones held up the best, but they don't sell them anymore.  I have been scouting Tupelo Honey and BLANQI's newer versions.  I didn't like that the bottoms around the ankles stretched out the last time, but I am willing to give them another try as the material was super comfortable and they came up very high.
  • This is Baby #3 for me. I gave all my cute summer maternity clothes to my cousin. I need to buy all new stuff as well. I really like Zulily and old navy for maternity clothes.

My nausea kicks in around 8weeks so not looking forward to next week. With my first I would get sick all day until I gave birth. With my second I took declegis around 10weeks and nausea stopped at 12weeks so I stopped taking it.  Has any one tried vitamin B6 to prevent nausea?
  • @JEM525 I need to check Zulilly!

I just got B6 from my doctor yesterday. I don’t know why I’ve been hesitant each time to try using it. It’s a vitamin for goodness sakes. Every pregnancy I end up getting it, staring at it and not taking it. The nausea has been so hard this round (that or I’ve forgotten...baby 3 is 2.5 now).
  • @name1109 watch out for Zulily, there shipping takes foooorrrevver! The rocket ship items deliver like normal mail.

STM+ In previous pregnancies have your symptoms been different for different sexes? Ex: throwing up when it was a girl, but not with a boy? Or both girls, and completely different symptoms?
  • @potofgolden I felt worse with my daughter than my son, though that could have been because I was trying to keep up with a toddler during her pregnancy. I also had totally different cravings, with my son it was spicy/savory, and fruit. With my daughter it was sweets. With my son I had super sore boobs and worse fatigue, and also more cramping. With my daughter my nausea was worse but no sore boobies or cramping. This time I seem to have all the symptoms (plus headaches) and all the cravings so I don’t know what to think!

@potofgolden I have both a girl and a boy. My pregnancy symptoms were basically the same with both. What foods seemed to help or make things worse was a bit different. Pizza was the one thing I'd actually feel a little better after eating with my daughter but made me feel worse with my son. The main difference between the pregnancies was I had promordal labor for 3.5 weeks with my son but not my daughter.
  • @potofgolden I’d forgotten about Zulily!

Im afraid I’m no help for boy vs girl.  We just found out it’s a girl so...our fourth girl. 🥰🥰🥰🥰. I’ve craved something different with each. I’m older (38) and the pregnancies have been progressively harder on my body but otherwise each pregnancy has been unique in its own?
  • @name1109 You already found out the sex? Congrats on another girl! Did you do NIPT? How long was the result turnaround? Which company was it through?

  • @hedgepig we took it on 4/1 and then found out April 7th. It’s standard for older moms through my husband’s healthcare.  Unfortunately, I don’t know who did the testing ...it was a please go give MORE blood.  Thankfully everything else seems fine for her as well.
  • @name1109 I'm doing mine on Wednesday, but I was worried that the results would be slow because of Covid. Glad to hear the turnaround was normal and that everything looks good for baby girl!

  • @hedgepig they told me that maybe the results might slow. They said expect two weeks and to call if I hadn’t heard in two weeks. However, it wasn’t two weeks! It seemed to work fine and I know the sample had to be flown to CA then to NC, tested and then the results provided back. Despite that....it wasn’t bad at all.
  • @name1109 That's so reassuring! I never thought I'd be so eager to learn the sex, but I am (and of course to make sure baby is healthy)!

  • Anyone deal with high blood pressure during pregnancy? I just got an elevated reading (140/80 I think) at my 11 week appt. The midwife diagnosed me with chronic hypertension and put me on baby asprin to start. She mentioned I may need to be induced at 38 or 39 weeks - I really would like to avoid that if at all possible! Anyone with experience? Thanks!

  • @hedgepig did they take it more then once? I had a few high blood pressure readings during my first pregnancy but I have a tendency to get overwhelmed going to appointments and I would be racing to the appointment from work. If I had a high reading at the beginning of the appointment they would check it again near the end and it always went down. My doctor ended up having me get a blood pressure cuff for at home so I could record it. After a few weeks of low readings at home she said I could stop. I ended up being admitted at 39w3d because of high blood pressure but I was also in labor. My BP was only high because I was very, very nervous. Also, just a heads up but if you have high BP they are going to try and keep you an extra day at the hospital. I went in on a Tuesday night and had my son on a Friday. They wanted to keep me until Monday but I refused and left on Sunday lol.
  • @hedgepig I had high blood pressure at the end of my pregnancy that turned into pre-eclamsia and had to be induced. I will say that it's early, and like @dumbledoredies said, there's a chance that other factors could be in play like nerves when they take it, so it may not be a lasting part of your experience. But I'll also add a note that while I didn't love being induced, it also wasn't the complete nightmare that I had in mind. You get through it and while it's hardly anyone's ideal birth story, it can also end up being a non-factor in the larger scale of things. I can give you more details about my birth story if you're curious, but I think the main takeaway for me is that I wouldn't let this possibility stress you out even further! I hope your next appointment the whole thing takes care of itself and it's not a problem either way!

@dumbledoredies Thank you! I actually do think that this could be a fluke - she took it twice, but both at the beginning of the appt and I was a little stressed because I stopped for a coffee on the way in and it took - not kidding - like 15 minutes and almost made me late for my appt. I was stressing super hard about it, so maybe that? I hope so.
Eta: thanks for the heads up about an extra night in the hospital - hopefully not!
@auburnvelvet86 Thanks for sharing! I would love to hear your birth story!

  • @hedgepig that seems kind of drastic after having a "high" Reading at one early along appointment .😲
  • @hedgepig it might be a good idea to get a BP cuff and take it at home a few times. If anything it can ease your mind that everything is fine and if you're still having high readings give you a chance to mentally prepare yourself for being a little more high risk. They are pretty cheap if I'm remembering correctly.
  • @BabyL52716 I thought so too! I think it's because they want to be super proactive and get me on baby asprin asap and extra monitoring just in case it continues. And if it was a fluke, then they can relax about it.
@dumbledoredies I think that's a good idea. FWIW hypertension runs in my family, so I suspect that my mom or brother may have a cuff around that I could use. If they don't, then I'll pick one up.

  • @doublestroller community is so key. For me I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in tears due to all this isolation. It’s driving me CRAZY. We’re thinking of announcing on social media on Monday (12 weeks).  We haven’t been close to family to celebrate for all but one kid, so at this point it seems normal. A little sad but it is our life I’m afraid. Moving every three years will do that for you!  Don’t lose hope though! This virus will pass at some point.

I LOVE your suggestions for maternity clothing!!!!
  • @hedgepig I have ended up being induced at 39 and 38 weeks (2 out of 2 pregnancies). I think the higher readings for me started in 3rd tri, as I typically run 110/60. Anywho - my OB kept an eye on it and i still had giant healthy babies and my BP went back to normal almost immediately.

in your situation I think it is a little soon, but that is just my (professional) opinion. With white coat syndrome, coffee in your system, and then the stress of running late you absolutely would have likely had a higher than normal reading at the beginning of the appt. I would get a cuff and take your BPs at home and keep a journal. Then maybe after a week or so, share your readings with your midwife and see what she says. I recommend 3 times a day (morning, mid day, evening) or even every 4-6 hours if you are concerned. ❤️

  • I had high blood pressure with all three of my pregnancies.  With my first I was put on medicine around 35 weeks and also put on moderate bed rest at that time. I was induced at 39 1/2 weeks and everything went well (I was already 3cm dilated before they started the induction).   With DDI and DD2, I was put on moderate bed rest around 30 weeks because of high blood pressure and in addition with DD2 I was having early dilation. With my later two pregnancies my water broke at 36 1/2 and 37 1/2 weeks so induction was not necessary.  My blood pressure didn't become an issue for me until close to my third trimester in all three pregnancies and once I was pulled out of work it was very much under control.
  • @doublestroller welcome! It's such a crazy time to be pregnant right now. Becoming an active member here has helped make this pregnancy seem more real :)
  • I saw this on Facebook:

Whats something you did or said during labor that you will never forget?

My husband was wearing a really soft T-shirt that I was grabbing on to for comfort. We knew we were getting close to having baby. I had him bring a nice shirt to change into for baby’s arrival and pictures. A contraction came and I started grabbing onto the new shirt and freaked. I hated the material, it wasn’t as comforting!! I started yelling at him to change back to the other shirt. Hahah. Crazy LaborZilla. Now I know why kids get all crazy about their binky.
  • @potofgolden Once serious labor hit at home and we were getting ready to go to the hospital I told my husband “I don’t want to do this anymore. I can’t do this.” He kindly reminded me I really didn’t have a choice in the matter. Our baby was coming soon.
  • ksd20ksd20 member
@hedgepig make sure your feet are flat on the ground, arm relaxed and not talking during BP too.

Labor story: I was 9cm dilated, the resident said she was going to get the attending, I said I needed to push. She told me to wait, that she was going into the hall and would be right back, I yelled "no you're not! I'm having this baby now!" She didn't and I did
  • @potofgolden with our first during labor my husband’s breathing infuriated me. Just the fact of breathing. From him. He breathes like a normal person so nothing out of the ordinary. I just wanted him to cease breathe. I remember thinking but shoot I love him. He can’t stop breathing. But seriously stop already.
  • I don’t remember saying anything out of the ordinary with either babies so far, but I do remember the nurse commenting on how my DH was doing a great job pushing. 🤣🤣 Every time I would push, he would take a deep breath and hold it too. It made me laugh and was super cute. 🥰
  • These labor stories are great! 🤣
  • @doublestroller I totally agree that this virus has toned down the excitement level. It makes me really sad, because I know this will be our last baby and I want it to be special. I love being part of a mom community, especially now! Literally all my friend contact has been virtual lately.
  • Not as great as some of these....but my second came really fast. The anesthesiologist didn't make it in time so it was all natural. At one point I yelled something to the effect of "arrggghh it HURTS!" My OB just responded "I bet it does" in a very matter of fact tone.
In my defense, when I delivered my first, the epidural took so well I was numb from the boobs down. I couldn't move, bear down, feel ANYTHING. Sometimes it even felt difficult to take deep breaths.
