Product Spotlight: Diapering!

Sorry, I have been bad at posting these lately. I will post a couple next week to get caught up. I didn't anticipate working in healthcare during a pandemic, and that has taken up a lot of my time. If I miss posting, anyone else feel free to post!

Each week we'll spotlight a new category of product. Feel free to comment on threads like these throughout your time at the board, not just when they're in their week in the spotlight, if you discover something new OR are new to the board. This week it's.... Diapering!
FTMs are encouraged to ask questions & STM/+s encouraged to share their knowledge based on experience. You can use any or all the prompts relevant to you below to share info in an easy-to-read format. Pictures/screen grabs, if put in spoilers, are welcome!
For all....
What diaper brands or cloth diapers do you recommend or not recommend? Thoughts on cloth vs disposable? Thoughts on diaper accessories like organizers or diaper pails?

Next up: Cribs, travel cribs, and sleeping surfaces!

Re: Product Spotlight: Diapering!

  • We are a Huggies family.  I prefer the snug and dry version as they didn't leak as much as the little snugglers for me. We also tried Pampers as that's what they gave us at the hospital, but there was something I hated about the smell of them. My kid didn't care either way.

Zero chance I could cloth diaper but more power to those of you who try/do.

  • I did cloth diapers about 75% of the time with my first. I went out and bought all bum genius all in one and fuzzibunz. The fuzzibunz stopped fitting my baby about six months in. No matter what inserts I used, they just kept leaking. I figured they just don’t fit her the right way. So I ended up purchasing more of the bumgenius AIO and loved the ease of them. I did have to add another insert towards the end of using them because DD bladder was bigger and would soak them every hour.

At night time I used the Huggies  overnight diapers. They helped keep her dry with little to no leaks so she didn’t wake up. If we were traveling or planning on being out a lot for a few days, I used pampers or Costco’s brand of diapers. They worked fine for us. I was gifted a few bundles of the honest diapers, but they didn’t hold as well after my daughter got to size two.

Has anyone tried the Hello Bello brand of diapers or wipes? Any opinions?
  • Oh and I also was originally told that a diaper pail was a waste and not to get one. Totally disagree. Those diapers STINK, especially once you start real food, and I wasn't walking out in the garage multiple times a day to toss them. 🤷 We ended up with two--one in the nursery, one in our living room. We just went with the diaper genie because it was the easiest to find supplies for in store.
  • I use cloth diapers 95% of the time with my son. I use gdiapers, which is a hybrid diaper that you can just wash the inserts if the liner and cover do not get wet/soiled. I also have some disposable inserts that I use if I don’t get the diapers washed in time or when we are hiking/camping. At night, I use a wool diaper cover over his gdiaper to prevent leaks.

When he was a newborn I used seventh generation diapers until he was about 8lbs and he could fit the small gdiapers. The newborn gdiapers didn’t work for him. When he was younger I used disposable (seventh generation or honest) when we travelled, but now I just use the gdiapers with the disposable liners. Seventh generation are not great for blowouts, and they didn’t seem to contain the waste once he got older so I switched to honest and those worked better for poop.

I’d love to get some different cloth diapers to use when this baby is a newborn so any recommendations would be great. I’m thinking I might buy green mountain diapers trifolds and use those with a wool covers, but I’d love to hear what worked for others at that age.

Also any recommendations for more eco friendly diapers to use for traveling when the baby is little?

Diaper pails: I use a 6 gallon galvanized steel trash can with a lid and a planet wise reusable bag. I rinse the diapers before placing them in the can, but it does a good job of containing the smell because the lid fits tightly. Then I wash the bag with the diapers.

Diaper cream: I love mother love diaper balm. It’s expensive and a tiny jar, but it worked wonders when my son had a diaper rash as a newborn and you don’t need very much.
  • Kudos to the CD moms but it has never been for me. With my first we could only use Pampers and with my second we could only use Huggies. I think every kid is different. I really like Target brand for both, but it came down to which was cheaper with deals/coupons.

For diaper cream I have always loved Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. I don’t understand the whole butt cream spatula thing, use your hands lol.

We didn’t use a diaper pail until recently. My 3 year old with special needs is still in diapers so we caved and I regret not getting one from day one! We went with Ubbi which lets you use any bag like a garbage bag which is super nice. There’s zero smell from the pail when it’s closed too.
  • We have used Pampers for all 3 of my babes and have been happy with them. I hated Honest diapers- they always leaked and they were super stiff. We had a Diaper Genie and I wish I would have gotten the Ubbi stainless steel diaper pail instead- I felt like the smell hung on to the plastic. For diaper cream, I swear by Triple Paste! We tried a bunch of them and that was by far the best.
  • I love the idea of doing cloth diapers but don't have a laundry sink, or a place to install one :(  it will have to be disposables for this momma.  Brand wise, I will see what fits best I guess - every baby will be different!

Diapers: I wish that I were a cloth diaper mom, but I'm not.  I usually buy diapers and wipes from Costco when they go on sale, so I usually use Huggies or Kirkland brand.  I've used multiple brands of diapers.  The only brand that I personally wouldn't buy again was Luvs.  I felt like I was constantly dealing with leaks, so I never gave them a second chance.

Diaper pail:  I bought the Ubbi diaper pail.  It looks nice.  There is flexibility on the type of bag that can be used with it.  It holds smells in well as long as the lid is closed.

Diaper cream:  I found that Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment to be the absolute best for DS.  I made the switch to Aquaphor after using Boudreaux's Butt Paste on DS for a diaper rash.  The diaper rash just kept getting worse and worse with Boudreaux's, but it quickly resolved after I started using Aquaphor.  My sister had the same issue with her kids.

Other:  With DS, I considered not buying a changing table, but I am glad that I ended up getting a changing table.  The changing table that I have is just an attachment that went on top of DS's dresser.  It just made life a little easier.

  • @angela444 I don’t have a laundry sink either, but I bought a diaper sprayer that easily attaches to your toilet and a diaper sprayer shield that keeps the water from spraying everywhere. It’s actually pretty easy to clean the diapers once you’re used to it.
  • When I worked in daycare I always wanted to cloth diaper. Then I realized I would be the one washing them and that changed my mind real fast. 🤣 I will makeshift a cloth diaper when they get a really bad diaper rash though.

We are pampers people. DD was allergic to huggies so we just stuck with pampers after we discovered that outside of what people gift us. Now with covid we’ve had to just buy what’s on the shelf too so thankfully DS doesn’t seem to share the allergies DD had.
  • Both my brother and I were allergic to plastic diapers, so I'm just assuming I'm going to do cloth diapers.  In addition to being a crunchy type anyway. :)
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

  • @carrotsandpeas3 we are seriously twins, I also think more power to the CD moms but no way I can do it.

We are currently a Hello Bello family, I love the convenience of it and I'm not gonna lie, the designs. They never leaked or anything and work well for us HOWEVER... I will confess that I think Pampers Pure fit my kid better. We've used those for about 14 months.

Wipes: water wipes or hello bello (same ingredients, I think I like water wipes slightly better)

Diaper cream: DS never had a diaper rash but we use Boudreaux’s Butt Paste and the Earth Mama balm. I just use them for big poops. We've lucked out with the no diaper rash.

Diaper pail: omg I was also wondering why people would buy one but I'm SO GLAD we got it. The moment he started solids...the SMELL! I couldn't believe how different it smelled from newborn poop!!! We love the Diaper Genie and get the Amazon brand bags.

Our changing table is an Ikea cube storage (Kallax) with a Skip Hop foam changing pad. I definitely recommend it (or the kekaroo if you wan to spend more $). I hated the regular pads with the cover, they would constantly get stained and it's just another piece of laundry.

I also recommend a portable changing pad for out and about or traveling, and the arm and hammer diaper bags for stinky diapers on the go.

Like many others, I wish we were a cloth diaper family, but... I know myself too well. For our first we bought small packs of newborn-size diapers in multiple brands to see what we liked best. Huggies leaked, Honest gave him a rash, Amazon (I forget their brand name) leaked, Target brand didn’t seem very sturdy; pampers were the clear winner for us. We switched over to Kirkland signature (Costco brand) maybe around size two or three, once we knew he would stay in a size long enough to warrant the huge box. We already bought a box of Kirkland Signature size 1s for the new baby... just in case our local diaper shortage continues lol.

We bought a Diaper Genie and it was a lifesaver when we lived in an apartment and had to go down three floors and across the parking lot if we wanted to take a stinky diaper “out.” With the tiny diapers you can go for awhile before you have to pull the bag. Now for the toddler, wet diapers go in the kitchen garbage and stinky diapers go in a little bag and thrown into the garage until the next time we go out there. The bigger diapers just filled the diaper genie way too fast to make it worthwhile.

We use Aquaphor as a diaper cream. It was recommended by my dermatologist and his pediatrician.
  • We did cloth with my first. I tried all kinds of diapers but green mountain prefolds and thirstiest covers ended up being my favorites. Pocket diapers are nice for babysitters/grandparents. Also liked Nicki’s and Imagine covers and prefolds. I used snappis instead of traditional pins.

I didn’t have a diaper sprayer, just dunked and swished. Definitely doing cloth again. I really don’t have to buy anything this time. I might replace some newborn diapers. I loaned mine out and didn’t get them
    back in great condition unfortunately.

  • I started off with Pampers Swaddlers for the first year or so.  There was a diaper raffle at my shower so we got to kind of test out a bunch of brands and those were best for my son at that stage.

When my son turned one we tried some cheaper brands. I am a total Target gal, but I HATED their diapers, I thought they fit weird and were bulky.  Then we switched to Luvs and I actually think they are great, especially for the price, I was very surprised! We don’t use them for overnight, we use Pampers Baby Dry because he pees a ton at night.  Luvs are a great day time diaper for us!

I use Amazon Elements Sensitive baby wipes and I like them, but honestly I haven’t had major issues with any wipes.

I use Pampers Swaddlers until size 2, then switch to cheaper diapers. I LOVE the smell of Swaddlers; I think I've tied it to the lovey-dovey feelings of having a new baby... 😍 Target Up & Up brand just changed their diapers and they are great! Less bulky and they fit really well. I usually get those when they have gift card deals. If we run out though, I pick up a box from Aldi because they're so cheap and right down the road from us. (Never had allergy problems with my babes, but Huggies did leak with my first.)

Triple Paste is MAGIC. I usually use that with bad rashes and it clears up within a day! I always carry a tube of Desitin when out and about because it is easy to apply and comes in a small tube.

The BEST diaper pail for disposable is the Diaper Dekor. Look up their website and watch the videos. The refills last for a long time, and you can use your own garbage bags too! The smell is always contained, and I've not had a problem with the plastic soaking up diaper smell over time. So glad I went with this one!!
