  • If you're looking at them online, maybe you could look at the reviews for each mattress.  Ours was a hand-me-down, so I really wouldn't know where to begin either ;D

  • Good question.  We had a hand-me-down from my sister (and yes, I did all the research on the supposed "risks" of using a second-hand mattress).  Honestly, my DD sleeps just as well on the 1" Pack-n-Play "mattress," so I'm not sure she would appreciate the luxury of a $200 mattress.  I say go middle of the road to less expensive on that.  There are lots of other more fun things to spend your money on!
  • Depends also on whether you want organic or not.  we don't want our child sleeping on a bunch of chemicals, and most good organic mattresses run 200+.
  • According to Baby Bargains foam is the better choice. Top pick is the Colgate "Classica I" mattress ($100). Runner up is the Moonlight Slmber's "Starlight Support" ($245).

I haven't looked at mattresses myself, so I haven't compared any other reviews.

  • My husband and I relied on Consumer Reports and consumer reviews.  Unfortunately Consumer Reports doesn't rate the mattresses, but they do give a buying guide.  They recommend you look for:

    1. Firmness. Buy the firmest, heaviest mattress you can find. Don't worry that it may feel too firm. If it feels good to you, it's too soft for your baby. Press on the mattress in the center and at the edges. It should snap back readily and should not conform to the shape of your hand.

    2. Fit.  If you can squeeze more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib, the mattress is too small.

I wanted organic, and foam b/c it is MUCH lighter. We picked up regular mattresses and foam mattresses in the store and the foam was so much lighter, but still very firm. I still haven't completely decided, but I'm leaning towards the Colgate Eco Classica (or something like that!). I believe it is a little under $200.

This is what I went for.  I found the Colgate one online as there were no stores near me with it.  The two above recommended are foam mattresses, which Baby Bargains recommends over a traditional mattress because they are a lot lighter for those emergency middle of the night sheet changes.
