Ok ...this may seem like a really dumb question ....but how in the world do u pick a crib mattress ??? They range from like $50 - $220, and the descriptions all sound the same ( except , firm, extra firm, coil, foam ). I wouldnt know what to pick for me never mind an infant LOL
HELP !
Re: Crib question ... HELP
If you're looking at them online, maybe you could look at the reviews for each mattress. Ours was a hand-me-down, so I really wouldn't know where to begin either ;D
According to Baby Bargains foam is the better choice. Top pick is the Colgate "Classica I" mattress ($100). Runner up is the Moonlight Slmber's "Starlight Support" ($245).
I haven't looked at mattresses myself, so I haven't compared any other reviews.
My husband and I relied on Consumer Reports and consumer reviews. Unfortunately Consumer Reports doesn't rate the mattresses, but they do give a buying guide. They recommend you look for:
1. Firmness. Buy the firmest, heaviest mattress you can find. Don't worry that it may feel too firm. If it feels good to you, it's too soft for your baby. Press on the mattress in the center and at the edges. It should snap back readily and should not conform to the shape of your hand.
2. Fit. If you can squeeze more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib, the mattress is too small.
This is what I went for. I found the Colgate one online as there were no stores near me with it. The two above recommended are foam mattresses, which Baby Bargains recommends over a traditional mattress because they are a lot lighter for those emergency middle of the night sheet changes.
