@RedBaramid Sheesh!! I can relate with schools shutting down. I also work in a school (but not directly with kids) and the students from our school were at an event this weekend and a spectator at the event was confirmed with the virus on Monday. The school that held the event shut down, and a couple neighboring schools. Ours did not. Parents of students at the event have the choice of bringing their kids to school or not. Staff seems to be going out of their minds here. All of this is just nuts!
I live in central Ontario, there are very few cases in our entire province. I live in a small town outside of a Small city. TP has left the aisles of all major stores. 2 Walmart’s, drug stores, grocery store, even our Costco has run out. Oh and of course, Lysol. MH works in Toronto. I stocked up on sanitizer from Bath and body works (the only place around that has any at all). Our Walmart is cute with its “cart cleaning section”. All this hype and i couldn’t even tell you where the closest infected person is to me, I’m getting anxious about it tho. Trying real hard to just stay cool and keep doing what I’m doing. I also work on call with our local school board who just sent out an email to all staff in regard to our safety and letters to the parents. Extra precaution is taking place of course as far as cleaning and monitoring but there has been no change in attendance with children or staff being sick at all.
I wfh normally at least 1/week, so this isn’t that different but I am going a bit stir crazy and missing the social interaction. I’m just hoping that with those who can staying home, those who can’t will benefit, too.
For those that work at schools, you may end up wfh too. Some schools have already closed or have gone to remote learning. Daycares and preschools are closing too. I know it’s got to be super frustrating for both teachers and parents, though.
I think travel by car is still fine. We might do a road trip for a change of pace. I would just avoid flying if you can, and take extra precautions if you can’t.
Not to change the subject, but today I started laughing really hard at a pregnancy meme and then all of a sudden I was sobbing for no reason. Fun new development!
I'm concerned with it being so close to exam season that if my school has to close it will mess up all my students exams. I live in Birmingham UK which is a city of 1million people, there are amazingly only 2 cases in the city as of today but with my school being in the center of the city, I would think we might have a higher chance of closing as things get worse.
My son currently has Slapped Cheek Syndrome, which has been another stress as it is not great to get it in pregnancy. The doctor thinks it won't be an issue now I'm in the second trimester, but I'm not so sure. At least I can get a second opinion at my anatomy scan soon.
@cornichonmam i had slap cheek as a kid. I looked awful but it went away fast. I dont think it will harm your pregnancy but I understand your fear.
4 cofirmed cases of corna in my county now. Also Houston shut down the Rodeo. Which IMO it should have already been canceled. A lot of locals I know are angry it was shut down.
I'm also still sick. Ended up going to the ER sunday because of my ear. So this 2nd run of my cold has resulted in a really nasty ear infection. I cant hear out of my right ear. Saw my ob today. I've been so sick I lost 7 pounds. So that has me concerned.
Also something funny. My husband tried to be helpful. He tried to shampoo our daughters bed. I can't hear so I didnt notice until I went tongo to the kitchen for a drink. I walk in tell him to shut it off and ask what hes doing.
He tells me there was a spill and he wanted to help me. I tell him but its an absorbent sheet you just take it off. He tells me he doesn't understand what that means.
I pick the matress up and take the waterproof sheet off. The man was shampooing and absorbent water proof sheet. 😆 all he could say was he wondered why the water wasnt sucking up.

Ugh. I check the mail maybe once a week, and I leave my girls in the car. It literally takes me less than a minute to run inside, get the mail and come out. I lock the car, I even leave my purse and phone in there, and I don't pick up packages. And they're short enough you can't really see them through the windows. It's just practically impossible to get mail with both of them. How am I supposed to hold a baby in one arm while opening and closing a mailbox and pulling mail out? Seriously.
Well, today, after I came out, I noticed a woman in another car was on her phone. Of course, it could have been anything, but of course I'm freaked out she was calling CPS on me. And it kind of looked like she could have been looking at my car or the license plate.
We had a trip planned to Galveston and Houston this weekend but decided to cancel because there was a case of community transmission today in Houston. It sucks but we didn’t lose any money and we will just do fun stuff with DS here and make it a staycation. I took time off tomorrow through Monday so it will be a nice break.
My company advised pregnant women to stay home today, although I think that mostly applies to their other offices because there hasn’t been a case yet in Austin. However, I think by next week I will be working from home.
Y’all, I have been on the verge of a panic attack about this for several days. My heart has been racing, my stomach is in knots, and I’ve had trouble catching my breath whenever I think about it. I know my reaction is really out of proportion to my personal level of risk, but I’ve always struggled with anxiety and the virus + pregnancy have made my anxiety come roaring back.
I hope all of you and yours stay healthy and happy over the next few weeks! So glad to have this supportive community.
@gomillis I'm in the thick of it here, not as bad as other places but it's very real here. I also have hardcore anxiety and racing thought issues. Make yourself a check list of what you feel you should do that would make yourself feel prepared and do it. Then, please find somewhere to put that anxious energy.. for me this was the inspiration I finally needed to get back into yoga and I've been practicing daily for 5 days now. It's really helped me slow down and breathe. Last, after you finish that to do list remind yourself that you've already taken all the steps you can to protect yourself and your family. Remember that after you've done everything you can, it's all out of your hands and try to remember that you can only control that which you have already controlled. Anxiety is a real beast and these hormones aren't helping any of us... but try to breathe and remember stress isn't good for baby either.
I am not normally the anxious type, but I'm starting to fall prey to the anxiety here, too. DH is amazing when it comes to stuff like this tho; he's handy, capable, practical, it's like he's in his element in any crisis (or pre-crisis) type situation. It worries me tho just seeing him concerned for me and DD, concerned for his folks who are part of a higher risk group.... :/
Thanks, @RedBaramid. That is great advice and a helpful perspective. So far tonight I’ve disabled the news alerts on my phone, which I think will be a big step in the right direction. Tomorrow, DH and I will tackle making a checklist of things to help us prepare, as well as a list of things that we want to do with our extra time around the house. I think focusing on some of the upsides of this situation will help.
@BusinessWife I'm curious why you have to fill out fmla paper work if you have decided to be at home now. I thought that fmla only protects your job for 12 weeks. @coldlife I do the same thing with my daughter when I'm running in to pick up food. I remote start my car so that the heat/air is on so I know that she is comfortable. But I always worry that a cop will pull up next to me and see her or someone would call them on me. It's just so much easier for me to take the 30 seconds to run in compared to unbuckling her bringing her in and buckling her back in. But now she says "I want to come with you" and cries when I say no, so I have started to bring her when she does that. I figured it's a bad look to have a crying child in the car. @roo_baby I'm currently teleworking two days a week because of the pregnancy and I so miss the social interaction at work. I would so welcome more telework days, and I hope our impromptu to meeting today tells us that we are, but I do miss talking to people face to face.

@blackgirlmagic FMLA protects my benefits, is really my prime driver. Even for an unpaid leave, I can just pay OOP and keep continuity of coverage. and I can actually take it for up to 26 weeks, (job protection aside; that's not why I took it.) So on the one hand it leaves the door open that I could go back (in some capacity or another), because I haven't actually separated, and on the other it leaves STD available to me for the pregnancy at 36 weeks. 👍👍 STD and mat leave are paid at least partially, but again main thing being keep my same benefits in place throughout the pregnancy and delivery, and even extend it till the end of the year, at which point either I go back, or get different insurance, but by then the baby would be here and I don't so much mind if I have to find a new provider. 🤷
I was mad at DH this morning. I got DS1 ready to go on time/a little early so I could get to work on time. Well DH said, "since you got ready early enough you have enough time to eat breakfast in the house instead of mommys car". (I think I mentioned previously DH doesnt like that DS1 eats in my car but I dont care, we get places on time) So I had to sit in the house 30 minutes while DS1 barely nibbles on his breakfast before I said we are just leaving now and he could finish not eating his breakfast in the car so I wasnt any further later to work. I now have to stay another hour later than I wanted today at work since we left later than I wanted and the increase in traffic we had to deal with.
Welp, our governor just banned all gatherings over 250 people for the next 30 days, which means I’m officially funemployed for the rest of the month! At least my mother will stop worrying so much about me getting sick. Thank goodness we received an early baby shower gift from my grandparents last week, which will now be used for paying bills instead of buying baby things, oh well.
H's shows for the month of March got cancelled. They are starting summer projects now. Works for us since we are having a baby and now he can take off guilt free.
Try not to get nervous about closing major establishments. This is a proactive measure meant to slow the spread. If we can slow the spread enough that means that our hospitals will avoid over crowding and hopefully we will not reach a point where we are having to look at people and decide who is more likely to survive. It will decrease our mortality rates overall and ensure better care for everybody who does end up needing care in hospitals. Seeing these measures is a good thing. It feels scary, but I promise keeping people from gathering is scientifically shown to slow the spread of illness and save lives.
My kids district just announced it will be closed all of next week. My walmart is now running out of canned goods. People are going crazy here.

@kgrgreen Maryland closed public school from the 16-27. Our daycare said that unless things change significantly they are not closing because who is going to watch the kids of the nurses and doctors that is taking care of everyone. I never thought about it like that.

My husband was at the grocery store today and called to say we should maybe buy more than what I sent him out for (cheese 😂) because apparently it was such a zoo and shelves were empty. He came home with a bunch of non perishable stuff that I doubt we are going to eat.
@roo_baby its crazy that we have all been pregnant this long that there is now a december group!
Is anyone here a minimalist?
I feel like I am drowning in stuff. Like being sick for so long just makes it that much more obvious to me that I am drowning in stuff in my home. The minute I'm not sick its so difficult to try to get anything in order and I never really ever feel like my house is "in order" I feel like I just live to do laundry, dishes, and pick up the same room each day and never make any real impact on the house.
And I send stuff off to goodwill all the time. I feel like I don't bring in more stuff. But I swear my sister keeps mailing me useless crap. non stop for years. I have talked to her several times, literally telling her look the stuff you mail me is going to the trash and goodwill. and she still mails me more. I have even talked to her wife to get her to stop. She then just lies to her wife about what shes buying and sending. No amount of talks telling her the stuff is over whelming makes it stop.

@tyrion_ ❤️ I heard someone from another country say what a terrible job this country has done responding to the situation, and I'm like Really???? Cos I do think you're right that it's an important reminder - this is all as an over abundance of caution, to try to prevent the spread from being much worse. They are taking it very seriously so that we don't have to have the same kind of disaster outcomes like they have in other parts of the world that didn't take it seriously from the jump, let all these travelers in, and now what. The more they can mitigate it NOW, before it gets too bad, the more whatever cases we do see can be managed sanely.
But I also hope it will be another lesson for everyday people who maybe didn't get the message the "first" time, i.e. Katrina, or Sandy or fill in the blank, the time to be ready / stocked is all time. Everyone rushing last minute creates so much more of a problem than if we all do our part to keep on hand what we need at all times. I mean seriously, how hard is it to keep an extra thing of TP in your house, rather than let your supply run down to zero? We have never operated our household that way, because that's just how we were raised, and it makes good common sense! Personally it stresses me out to run down to the last of whatever common household thing I use every day, so I do hope more people will get on board with keeping a few more basics on hand going forward, because that alone goes a long way to generate peace of mind, I think - knowing that really, we would be fine if we couldn't get out for a week at a time (or more), and that my neighbors would be fine, too! ❤️
@roo_baby they are hyping December big in TTGP - I only hope they have all the success! Because I was around there long enough to know how crappy it feels to be on the outside of a "super fun" pee-pact. 😬😔😭
@blackgirlmagic That's basically what my daycare said. They added they're privately owned and they would only shut down if 1.) the government literally shut them down, or 2.) if they have a few cases in the facility and then the Health Department shuts them down. My initial fear was having nowhere for DD to go and me still needing to go to work. And I feel so bad for everyone whose paychecks and income are being affected. I saw an article this morning of how many people will become bankrupt because of the virus.
I'm totally on board with the precautionary measures: My parents are older and we're not planning on seeing them anytime soon. We've stocked up on necessities to get us through if we are put on quarantine or, God forbid, this escalates further and we have a situation like Italy. I am a clinical scientist in the topical antiseptics industry and have been saying from the beginning, based on the stats of this virus, this is not another flu and we need to be careful.
my uni shut down for the rest of the semester (was initially only a few weeks)... between that, summer, and maternity leave, I could technically not have to go back to work until January 2021! I’ll probably go in to the office 1 day a week or so depending on how things evolve. It’s also awkward because there are more people that don’t know I’m pregnant than do, so at some point I’m just going to show up either very obviously pregnant or with a baby 😂
@psychobutthead I am not a minimalist but I am trying to go through each room and minimize as much as I can before baby gets here. I want to get rid of stuff so it’s easier to stay organized. We don’t have a whole lot of storage space so I’m trying to be as minimal as I can. It’s hard because my husband has a hard time throwing anything away and also has a lot of hobbies that take up a lot of space we don’t have!
H's university has moved strictly to online classes for all students until at least April 10th. Employees still go in and it's possible he may work from home one day a week. We have zero confirmed cases in my state, this is more out of caution and prevention than anything.
@BusinessWife I’m a Floridian, we are forever disaster prepared 😆 also being a germaphobe has been helpful because I alwahs have a stock of sanitizer and Lysol on hand.
Blah it's stare at the phone day for me, today is the earliest I might get a call with results from my gallbladder and liver ultrasound. CROSS ALL YOUR FINGERS FOR ME! I honestly feel so good, I am hoping this is a big precautionary flag where if we find something, we're just looking at monitoring the situation.
@tara4910@viola_mama I sent DH out yesterday to get a couple essentials. I should have clarified because he came home with 6 rolls of TP and a huge box of ice cream sammies. I guess we are good?
@psychobutthead I aim to be a minimalist but often fail. Marie Kondo really helped me (on netflix) with two mantras: 1. does it bring you joy and 2. gifts are often given for the purpose of the joy they bring when they are given (no subsequent purpose really). Your sister sounds like her "love language" is gift giving, does she send receipts? Maybe you could return everything and keep a savings account for her haha.
@roo_baby December!? That seems crazy! I can't believe we have been pregnant long enough for that to be happening!
@psychobutthead I am aiming to be a minimalist. I think I throw out/donate several boxes/bags of stuff every week. If something doesn’t have a designated home or purpose it’s gone.
i don’t think I’ve done a load of laundry since January. With first trimester fatigue, my husband took over laundry (which I was very thankful for and happy to give up.. its my least favorite chore!) I just did my first load of laundry in weeks ... and I don’t think my husband has emptied the lint trap once this entire time 🤦♀️
@fitandnerdy I pushed off laundry to DH since 1st tri since I just couldnt handle it. He washed DS1 school clothes and now I have to rewash them since he put the pod in and didnt do an extra rinse so its stuck to the clothes. He also only washes them and doesnt put them away so I have piles of dirty laundry all over the house until I get around to putting away the clean clothes so we have a basket to do the dirty clothes again.
I don't mind doing laundry, but I asked DH to sometimes help me bring the hampers down, or bring the folded laundry up, since being KU. I'll take care of everything in between. So lately when I DO still have to bring it up, I just plop the folded stack on the chair in front of his closet. BUT HE NEVER PUTS IT AWAY!!!! Because somehow that is also my job??? Dude, I bring it down, I wash it, dry it, fold it, bring it up - the least you could do is put it away in your own darn closet yourself SO YOU KNOW WHERE TO FIND IT!!!!??? I seriously do not want the responsibility of organizing that whole mess for him and taking the blame when he can't find what he needs. 🤬
