@chasingroygbiv my doctor said that laxatives were okay but not to take them too much. Try keifer milk! It's in the yogurt aisle and is like the love child of activia and greek yogurt. I've been making smoothies with it and some raspberries and blackberries (both of which help keep things a movin too!).
@chasingroygbiv my doctor did give me a sample that would be a prescription that’s a combo prenatal vitamin and stool softener/laxative. When I did that sample I did find it eased the issues ha! But I have terrible insurance and it wasn’t covered so that’s why I went to the colace.
@mflowers929 if you figure something out let me know. Because I’ve been struggling too. I go through waves of craving things so I make them and then don’t want it. Happened to me yesterday with waffles in the morning and pizza at night. Ate an obnoxious amount of homemade rice krispy treats for breakfast/lunch and white rice with butter and salt for dinner after I ate the cheese off my pizza haha
@chasingroygbiv my midwife has given Miralax the okay! I've had lifelong issues with constipation, so I know most the popular laxatives like the back of my hand 🤷♀️
Miralax works by preventing your body from absorbing as much of the water from stool. Similar to a Colace, but I've found Miralax more helpful. The important thing I was told is to rely on laxatives that affect stool, NOT bowels (many traditional laxatives stimulate bowel movement - i.e, contractions).
@mflowers929 you could try just including higher calorie foods at your meals, like avocados, full fat dairy (if you eat it), butter/olive oil, etc so that you’re still getting the calories you and baby need without eating “more”
@kaytothetee My sister recommended Miralax to me during my last pregnancy and it really helped during my second trimester. Colace was like tic-tacs for me- it did nothing.
I go to MFM for the first time tomorrow. I don't think I'm switching there for all my care, just checking in. Can anyone shed some insight on what to expect? I already had my ultrasound they wanted to have before the appointment on Friday.
Has anyone used a midwife for any current or previous pregnancies? Currently I go to my family doctor until after 20 weeks, at which point she transfers me to the labor & delivery team at the hospital I'm delivering at. I like the idea of a doula at the birth (same as a midwife here apparently) and how they check in on you and baby for 6 weeks after birth. My Dr doesn't recommend it for the first pregnancy since everything's new and they're not drs, but would recommend us some if we still want that- if you've used one before, what are the pros/cons of a midwife?
@readytobemama I used midwives for my last birth and all of my care before. It was great. The midwives I see work out of an independent birth center, so the rooms have queen beds and are made to be comfortable. I wanted to have a water birth, but it turns out I hated laboring in the tub. My husband took all the hypno birthing classes with me, but neither of us practiced much, so this time I definitely want a doula (different people) to help me through labor. My little one needed oxygen after birth, and they had that. We were able to do skin to skin for the about 5-7 hours we waited before he had to be transferred to the NICU at the children's hospital. It was a big environment shock going from the midwife center to the NICU, but I got to log all that kangaroo time towards a free stuffed kangaroo. Having that uninterrupted time is one of the things I'm most grateful for. Feel free to ama
@readytobemama I’m using a nurse midwife currently. I’ve only been to one appt but I really liked her and the student midwife that was also there. They’re affiliated with the university hospital so I will still be delivering in the hospital. I was thinking about a birth center but I wanted to be at a hospital for my first baby. I felt really comfortable and am looking forward to going back! I really like the overall approach of midwifery but I also like that if I have to get transferred to an OB then that should be a smooth transition since they’re in the same group.
@pghren I do share care with MFM and General OB. As long as things look ok at my first tri scan/appt then they send me back to general OB until my anatomy scan. When I go to that they do more of an in depth scan than the usual AS. After that I’m usually seen by them every 4 weeks until the end when it moves to 1-2 weeks. Each time I see them I have a scan, too.
I have no choice where to birth in my city. It's hospital or nothing 🤷 Granted I personally have c sections, but I know some people would appreciate the option

@bluejay2 that's hard to say - Metamucil isn't itself a laxative, but can help get things moving if you are constipated AND have a lack of fiber in your diet (the same goes for folks where things are too loose and they have a lack of fiber). It doesn't work for me, but it really depends on your body and what's going on in there. Good news is, I haven't heard anything bad about taking either of them in pregnancy, so worth trying each!
@readytobemama 100% supportive of midwives! This is my first pregnancy, I'm using a midwife practice, and I wouldn't have it any other way! I'm working with Certified Nurse Midwives (there are different levels of certification), and they partner with an OB practice to manage any risks, or transfer care when appropriate. I am looking for a minimal intervention birth, a water birth, and still within a hospital setting, which led me to this practice. I also used to work with this group of midwives professionally so I'm definitely biased
@chasingroygbiv OMG! I just read your comment about showers and having 9 full blown showers would be the death of me! Between the anxiety of a party being about me and then needing to find places for all the random stuff they gifted, I would be a mess. On the other hand a diaper party cookout for every pregnancy would be my favorite. That would be so fun and useful!
Those that will be moving two kids into a room to free up a nursery, when do you plan to make the switch? I want to have both rooms completely set and ready to roll by the end of July probably, but I am dragging my feet moving the 4yo in with the almost 3yo because I expect to have some sleep issues. So maybe beginning of June after preschool lets out for summer would be best.
Just found out that my 4 year old has the flu - type B. She's on day 5 with it, so I'm sure I've been exposed to it by now and will start having symptoms any day now. Anyone have any experience with having the flu while pregnant? Any advice? I did get my flu shot (so did she, though).
@even_the_queen I'm almost over my second bug in about 4 weeks... It's definitely not nice! We finally bought a humidifier for beside the bed and it made a world of difference, I started feeling a little better every day since. And it made it so I could sleep all night instead of blowing my nose and coughing. I also took vitamin c and d along with my prenatals.
@Louise_Belcher I am considering having my oldest two share. We have the space for all 3 kids to have separate rooms, but it would mean giving up having a guest room. This isn’t ideal because H’s family lives out of the country and stays with us weeks at a time. If I do have the oldest share, I would probably do it in July as well. My concern is that my youngest will have just turned 2 in June and he isn’t the best sleeper. My other consideration was waiting until Christmas break since baby will likely be in our room anyway and that would give the 2 year old more time in his crib.
Diagnosed with Hypothyroidism today. So stressed out and upset. Spent all day crying in bed. 9 weeks +5 days today. Back to the doctor Wednesday to see if they want me on medication (midwife saw the high TSH- Doctor missed it?). Anyone dealing with Hypothyroidism?
@tuesdayw1992 I was diagnosed 10 years ago. Just a little pill every day and bloodwork occasionally to monitor and adjust the meds if needed. For me it hasn’t been a big deal at all. Try not to worry just yet. If one doc missed it maybe it is close to the cut off and open to interpretation?
@tuesdayw1992 I had it with my last pregnancy. Just had to take synthroid once a day. It's apparently pretty common in early pregnancy because of the extra strain on the thyroid and most often resolves itself by mid pregnancy

@tuesdayw1992 hypothyroid here too (mine's due to autoimmune stuff); its fairly easy to control but if you ever feel off it also could be to blame (I get palpitations and anxiety when mine is off). Try not to worry about it.

My doctor wants me to take one baby aspirin starting at 14 weeks to help prevent gestational hypertension since I had it last pregnancy. Anyone did this before? I’m not worried and I’m not sure what I’m asking for, I guess just to see if others have done this ?
@robinj716 I did it with my last pregnancy and did fine. I'll probably do it again this pregnancy as well. Minimal risks, you might notice that you bruise easier. If you bruise excessively or have nose bleeds just notify your OB.

@tuesdayw1992 my RE noticed my TSH was slightly above the first tri range they would like during my last pregnancy so they put me on low dose levothyroxine. I am on it for this pregnancy and it has kept my levels in a good range and this baby is doing just fine!
@robinj716 I’ve been on one baby aspirin a day on and off for like 2 years now due to recurrent early losses and slightly elevated clotting factor levels. I’m also on lovenox this time and this baby is growing perfectly!
I’m not someone who likes to be on meds and I worry about side effects but with my recurrent losses I trust the med combos my doctors have come up with and this pregnancy I’m on more meds than I’ve ever been on in my life and this is by far the furthest we’ve ever made it (9 weeks 3 days today, furthest babies had made it previously was 6th week). Soo yay for meds is what I say now 😂
Has anyone ever been on progesterone suppositories due to lower progesterone levels during the first trimester and if so when did you go off of them? My RE said I can go cold turkey at 10 weeks but my levels have been somewhat low in my opinion (doctors say they’re in the acceptable range and since baby is growing great aren’t too worried). But of course I’m a little nervous to go cold turkey so I talked to a nurse who said I could wean off and do every other day weeks 10-12 but said to definitely go off by 12. Anyway just curious if anyone has experience with this!
@momofmiracles31889 I think I mentioned that I'm on progesterone too. My instructions say until 12 weeks. The reason women take progesterone in the first trimester is because their bodies are responsible for producing it. By the end of first tri the placenta has taken over production of hormones for baby, so adding more is no longer needed unless you also have a history of preterm labor (in which progesterone may or may not work). So basically, if baby is growing well don't worry about the hormones 😊
I get super clinical and into research mode when I'm dealing with grief so I know way too much about the modus operandi of all of the medications I'm on.

@momofmiracles31889 I was on progesterone my last pregnancy and was done by 13 weeks. Cold turkey as well.
@robinj716 I’ve taken baby aspirin in pregnancies before and all was well. They just asked that I stop taking them around 35-36 weeks. Ask your doctor if there is any certain time you should stop.
@mflowers929 and @chasingroygbiv thanks ladies!! We had a great scan today and graduated from our RE but then of course I got home and was reading over my paperwork they sent home and saw my progesterone has just been hanging out around the same level most of the time instead of rising much and started googling and freaked myself out! Good old doctor google panic session 🤦🏻♀️ But thankfully like you said the nurse I then talked to basically explained since they’re in the acceptable range and not crazy low like 2 or something they don’t really worry too much as long as baby is growing well in the scans! I think I’ll do the whole every other day from 10-12 weeks then instead of cold turkeying at 10 since the nurse said that’d be ok and it sounds like your docs recommend a little longer on it!
Also @mflowers929 sorry you’re dealing with grief 😔 my grandparents on my mom’s side both passed away in the last couple years while we were going through pregnancy losses and our adoption journey and it was just a lot all at once since I hadn’t previously really dealt with grief. Prayers for comfort for you and your loved ones!
Random thoughts in response to the last 100 messages I just read:
1. I am super freaking close to my first BMB, Feb16. There's about 25 of us in a Facebook group now and we've had several massive real life meetups. I've personally met 15 of them IRL.
2. I have a hard time keeping up with this board now because I stay home with my kids. My first board I was working at a dumb job where I could keep TB open on a tab all day and keep flipping over to it and update several times a day. My second kid I had a much busier job and couldn't pull that off, and the people on that board sucked. But this board seems Uber cool like my first one so I really want to try to stay in touch here, even if it requires more effort.
3. I literally gave away or sold all my baby stuff. So I'm kind of hoping for a sprinkle...?
4. I'm gonna go start a pregnancy announcement thread if there isnt one already. It's about that time.

@geojaminee I was in Feb 2016 BMB too! I’m in a Facebook group but nobody has met up that I know of. I think they created one and I was too late to the group and they cut us off, so someone else started a new one! Funny we’re here again same BMB!
@greyl your uterus is still pretty low in your pelvis right now. It only starts rising above the pubic bone at around 12 weeks (sometimes earlier in subsequent pregnancies). It does start pushing stuff up pretty early though. It starts about the size of a closed fist and by 12ish weeks is about the size of a grapefruit, or about 4 times the size, so imagine all of that displaced!
