The word you hear most often in our house these days? "SELF!" I go to take Nora's hand so we can walk down the stairs and she screams "SELF!" while reaching for the bannister to walk down like a big girl. I hand her two animal crackers and she pushes them away, saying "SELF!" as she shoves her hand in the container. Ay carumba!
@ashtuesday Amen! Declan wants all his food in a bowl to carry around so no one tries to help him. He has to get his own out of bags of foods or gets mad. He wants to walk down the stairs to go outside but since he refuses to keep shoes and socks on he can’t.
@ashtuesday & @megpeg Nate hasn’t reached that phase yet. He wants us to help him do everything. Probably because he’s fallen down and up the porch steps a couple times. I’m sure we’ll want to be independent soon, though. Right now his most popular word is “uh uh” with his head shaking no. To just about everything. I never know what he wants anymore haha
@mccurleya - us too. Most everything is “noooo” but also like @ashtuesday and @megpeg - she’s been very independent - wants to do it herself and even prefers to sit in a regular chair not her high chair. Still working on words over here though and expressing what we want by asking.
Anyone showing interest in potty training? She likes the bathroom to get her toothbrush and that’s about it.
@shoretobe Nate sits in a big chair now too. The high chair caused too much screaming for me to handle. And yes to the potty. Nate loves it! He tells me when he’s peeing or pooping and we go sit on the potty. He’s only peed on it once, but at least he’s noticing now!
Declan sits in the high chair at the table or at our bench depending on if his siblings are here and he needs to be cool. We need to start potty training better. He goes on the potty and pees every time we change his diaper. If I would just set a timer he could potty train soon.
@shoretobe Nora pees on the potty a few times a day - my husband used candy to start potty training her, so she basically asks to use the potty when she wants candy. She is probably capable of real potty training, but we have a feeling as soon as she senses any pressure from us to use the potty, she'll rebel against it. So here we are!
@ashtuesday candy is a good motivator. I would slowly fade it out to where she only gets candy for actually using the potty. That’ll help make her realize you don’t get candy for just sitting on the potty, and then maybe she’ll only go when she actually has to!
@mccurleya That's the plan! She insists "SELF!" for getting candy, so we now have a big bag of Reese's pieces and an old, empty bag. We put 4 or 5 in the empty bag that she can help herself to if she actually goes. Otherwise, we give her one for just sitting on the potty. Work in process!

(Forgive our filthy counter - Chef Nora!)
