Re: Hello! Drop your top baby name choices here!

  • @cscrzldbg @JStill0603 my DS1 is also Quinton (well... spelled with an -on instead of -en). Middle name Richard. I still love the name!! I think it's slowly becoming more popular, but still pretty low on the list.

  • @adventuresawait2 We have an Eliza Mae. I’m obviously biased but I do love it. I’ve never felt like it’s not a complete name and no one has ever asked if it’s short for something.

  • @spiderlover25 aw, cute name! And that’s great. I have really grown to love it. Also, unlike DD’s name, it has an obvious spelling. Have some regrets about our name choice there even though I love the sound of the name.

@brettanomyces we actually did choose once we saw DD - we had a few names and picked one we thought fit her. And it does, but I kind of feel we would have made a more sensible choice if we had chosen in advance, before no sleep and all that! Ah well.
  • Now that we found out we are having a girl I am ready to pick a name.  I know some people prefer to wait, but not me.  I would love to have it picked out within the next few weeks so I can start buying personalized things lol

What are your thoughts on Cameron for a girl?  It's my top choice right now, but I don't know if it's too masculine.  Also I want a one syllable middle name, preferably something more feminine to offset Cameron and then we could call her Cami + short cute middle name.  My older daughter is Hadley Jo and we sometimes call her Haddie Jo so I would like to have something similar for DD2.
  • @adventuresawait2 I just want to say I got my copy of the Baby Name Wizard book in the mail and both my husband and I love it waaaaayyy more than our other name book.  It's got tons of great lists and even if we aren't in love with the names on some of the lists, it's proven to be entertaining.  Thank you for the recommendation!
  • @pirateduck oh thats good to hear! I just ordered that one yesterday and it should arrive today so I have something to look forward to when I get home
  • @bananapanda I was excited when I ordered it and then it got lost in the mail!  By the time it finally made it I was extra excited.
  • @bananapanda I like Cameron for a girl. I don't think it's too masculine, and Cami would be an adorable nickname.

  • @bananapanda I really like the name Cameron for a girl and Cami is a really cute nickname!

  • @bananapanda I've always thought of Cameron more of a girls name than a boys name. But I would say it could go either way.

  • @bananapanda +1 for feeling like Cameron is more of a girls name. I thought about it when we were coming up with names for DS, but it felt too feminine.
  • @bananapanda I love the nn Cami!
  • @bananapanda Agreed with everyone else, Cameron is a great girls name!! And perfect nickname...I’m a big fan of names with nicknames that make sense/flow with the name

Even though we don’t know if we’re having a boy or girl for another 3 weeks, I’m convinced it’s a girl. I loved the name Charlotte for a girl forever, nickname Charlie, but it’s become sooooo popular that I’m not so sold on it anymore.
My new favorite name is Rowan. MH and I are thankfully on the same general page when it comes to names (preferably not super common but something people have heard before, easy to spell, nickname friendly).
I love to give the example of when my mom and stepdad were trying to name my little brother (12 years younger), my mom wanted Logan and my stepdad wanted Sargent. Totally different styles. My mom won that battle thankfully.
  • @sunshinesea22 I think you hit the nail on the head, something unique but easy to spell and consequently easy to pronounce, like if someone sees the name written down, on a birth announcement or class roster or job application they know how to say it out loud and do not risk an embarrassing mispronunciation
  • @pirateduck I’m so glad to hear it!

@sunshinesea22 easy to pronounce is a good call.

@bananapanda Cameron / Cami is so cute.
  • @bananapanda I had a student named Camryn once thought it was a cute spin on the name she didn’t go by Cami, but that’s a sweet nickname!
  • @sunshinesea22 easy to pronounce, one spelling, and no nicknames were my rules for a girl name.
I have a name that can be spelled two ways so I can never find anything with my correct name on it. I hate the nickname for my first name. I will not respond if someone tried to call me that. Plus, I have a challenging Italian last name so I wanted a shorter first name.
  • We are going with Ada for a girl and Jensen for a boy. Middle names are family names and I’m not sold on our boy one but we will see.

DFs dad who is one of my favorite people wants us to name a girl Harper and I felt bad but I was like nope
  • @babyfoxden10 Interesting on the no nicknames. People seem very divided on nicknames...I get you on the not responding to people if they call you by a nickname. I don’t like when people I don’t really know call me by my nickname (just the first syllable of my name). And as someone who’s maiden name was always butchered, you definitely want at least one name that’s pronounceable by the general public. Ugh having to spell uncommon names Over the phone is the worst...”No I said N- Nancy!!!!!!!” Then again, someone will always mess things up even if you’re John Smith.
  • @mamaj1220 Love Ada! So classic!
  • The thing is we don't always get to decide on the nicknames...  people come up with their own, and sometimes the one that sticks is not the one you like.  I was talking about this specifically with the name Theodore recently, which could be Ted, Teddy, Dorey, or Theo.  I'm am ok with some of those and not others, but the way my life goes, the one I dislike the most will somehow be the one the kid gets stuck with.  Better to just avoid it altogether and try a name I'm good with all around.  Or for a girl you could have an Elizabeth, which could be Liz, Lizzy, Betty, or Beth.  Again, very different variations, some you may like better than others.  Things to think about.
  • Often, kids nicknames are decided by their friends

  • @brettanomyces this is true...my guess is that’s how so many men in their 60s-70s are nicknamed “Butch” quite possibly the worst nickname ever. I used to work with 3 men who went by “Butch.” must have been a great name in the 1950s 😂 (no offense if anyone has a grandpa/dad/husband with that nickname!)
  • @sunshinesea22 that is hilarious, my dad’s nickname is Butch.  The only ones who ever still call him that are his sisters and cousins.  He never asks anyone to call him that!  I doubt anyone he has ever worked with would even know.
  • @sunshinesea22 My grandma always called my brother Butch - luckily for him, no one else ever did! 😂
  • @babyfoxden10 I'm actually starting to lean more towards the spelling of Camryn, but still up in the air
  • DH and I found our favorite girl name while we were out on a walk when we first started dating. Written on the sidewalk in chalk amongst flowers and hopscotch, Serenity. We both immediately fell in love with the name, neither of us know anyone with that name(so it doesnt ruin it for us) and we both just think it's so pretty. Trying to agree on a boy name? Forget it! Once I share the news with my family, I plan to talk to my nana, who has our family genealogy, to see if maybe there's a name we like there for a boy or girl.
  • Girl will be McKenna Brianna and boy will be Jensen Reid. We find out this Wednesday which we will have :)
We struggled to agree for about a week on a girls name as he wanted Brianna for a first name but we agreed on McKenna as the first before we even found out I was pregnant. Boys name was easy peasy. Pretty sure that’s because DH is convinced 110% it’s a girl.
  • @c0leann I am excited to see another Jensen! I love the name and we are huge Supernatural fans so that convinced DF 😂
  • @mamaj1220 Sadly I’ve only seen the first season but DH watched religiously. I loved the name when I first came across him years ago and got lucky that DH liked it too haha
  • I’m resurrecting this thread now that many of us are finding out our baby’s sex. I know I need some help, lol.

My top two are currently Amelia and Alice. DD1 is Clara, and I feel like either of those goes well with it. My only issue with Alice is that combined with our last name would give her the same name as a famous author. Not terrible, but something to think about.

H’s top choice right now is Matilda. I do like it and could be convinced, but I don’t feel like it goes with Clara as well as the other two do. How much do you think that matters? What do you guys think of the name Matilda?
  • @soprano19 I way prefer Amelia to Alice. I don't love Matilda.

  • We're between Anne and Claire right now. I like Anne, DH likes Claire. Our other daughter's name is Margaret. Our last name starts with M.

My previous BMB doesn't like Anne with Margaret, but I'm not really worried about what the sib-set sounds like.
    DD #1: April 2017
    DD #2: May 2020
Baby #3: EDD May 2023; MC October 2022

  • @soprano19 we were just talking about Alice the other day.  We both like it, so it's on the short list, but I don't think it's number one for us.  I will share a few others that either my husband or I really liked, but the other one of us didn't...

    Landyn
    Conan
    Colt
    Addison
    Madeline
    Athena

Also, I'm not sure if I mentioned it in this thread or another, but we are not sharing names with anyone before birth because we don't wanna hear their opinions, so my husband came up with the idea that anytime someone asks about names we just tell them we are naming the baby after them and whatever the person asking is named we say that's currently one of our top choices.  It always makes people laugh and they usually drop the topic quickly.  However I am happy to take name suggestions and ideas from EVERYONE.  Who knows where the top name my husband and I can actually agree on will come from.  Also WHY is SOOOOOO much easier to come up with bad names than good names?  We have about a million bad names we can joke about but hardly any good names we can agree on.
  • Also FWIW your kids are individuals, and I'm not sure how much it matters about their names together or as a pair...  it's worth considering I guess, especially if there is a known/famous association with the pairing you are thinking about, but if it's just about the way it sounds, I don't know that I'd worry too much.
  • @pirateduck We didn't tell anyone (outside of my BMB) what our first daughter's name was going to be either. I plan to do that again.
    DD #1: April 2017
    DD #2: May 2020
Baby #3: EDD May 2023; MC October 2022

  • @soprano19 I like Amelia! When I hear Matilda all I can think about is the book/movie.  I don't hate the name, but it's just a very strong association.

@catem07 I think Anne and Margaret are fine together!

I think we are 99% set on Camryn but I don't want to say 100% until we find a middle name that we love so I'm open to suggestions for middle names.  I'm also wondering if I'm setting her up for the annoyance of everyone spelling it Cameron her whole life, but I really like how Camryn looks over Cameron.
  • @bananapanda I have an unusual spelling of a common name and I can say that the only reason it bothered me as a child was that I could never find anything personalized at a gift shop with my name on it 😂 I always liked that it was different than other spellings! If we have a girl we'll be going with an unusual spelling as well.

Re: telling people names, I didn't want to but MH didn't see the problem and has already shared our top choices. Everyone loves the girl pick but is so-so about the boy pick, but MH is really set on it. He is better about not letting other's opinions bother him than me, so if we find out we are having a boy (9 days!) we'll have to revisit that one I think.
