Re: Weekly Randoms 6/10

  • @cmbt2 it’s so hard isn’t it? I’m glad your son was ok and I am sorry you had to go through that. We had a tour today with a Child Life Specialist that shows us the pre-op, surgery and recovery rooms. It’s a chance for the child to see everything and not be surprised by everything when they actually go in. I had to hold back tears the entire time. I could tell she was so scared even for the tour. And my daughter is a brave dare devil so seeing her actually afraid just broke my heart. I’m having a really hard
time copping with it and I don’t know how much is made worse by hormones.

@cooaladolly you’re welcome and thank you as well. I’m really positive she’ll be ok and walking through Children’s Hospital and just knowing how much worse some families go through every day..helps me keep it in perspective but man it’s hard when when your own child.

Thanks, it really is. I’m not sure if our situation was compounded by him being on the spectrum or not, but to prepare you for what is actually a common thing...

Versed did not work on him to the extent it should have. It blocked the memories from forming and got him to cooperate with changing into the gown, but he still screamed when he had to go back to be put under. His surgery wasn’t until 11ish, so he was also hangry and thirsty. I do not know what it was like when they went to put his mask on, and frankly, I don’t want to know.

He did great during the surgery itself. They wouldn’t let us back in recovery until he started to wake up, but by the time we made it back there, he was already inconsolable and screaming. It took over an hour for him to snap out of it. They called it delerium. I have another friend who’s daughter also had this on wake up. It’s apparently common- the nurses described it as basically waking up after a black out with a massive hangover headache, but the littles can’t explain it so they scream. We were told he might be a “little angry” at wake up..

When DH and him were half way home (we took separate cars in case one of us had to stay overnight), he asked DH when we were taking him to get his tonsils out. He didn’t remember a thing, asked when we were going to do it for about a week, and now he doesn’t even mention it 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • I'm so glad we had DSs tonsils out last year. He went under perfectly, and I was biting my nails near crying when they took him. He refused to wear the gown and when he finally woke all the way up he realized he had one on and that's all he was mad about. He slept almost all day (his was at 8 am, we were home by 11) and the 2nd day youd never have known he had a surgery. The third and fourth days were really rough. He got a fever and was inconsolable most of those two days. But he healed perfectly fine and now he never gets ear infections anymore! ( We had them out cause his Dr thought they might be causing his breathing issues, so she wanted to rule them out. He has reactive airway disease though which is asthma in kids under 7)
