Pretty sure dd2 is working on ear infection number 6 since March 5th. She's been off antibiotics exactly 9 days...the pattern has been that we are back at the doctor between 10 and 13 days each time. She has her regular check up on Thursday and I selfishly hope she makes it until then because DH cannot take off work this week so I'd be stuck on sick kid duty if she gets sent home from daycare.

I'm also looking forward to her ENT appointment next week so I can ask flat out for ear tubes. My friend questioned me on why I want my kid to have surgery like I was doing something evil but my gosh this kids ears are awful and she's getting behind in speech and off balance a lot (leading to more falls). I told my friend that I don't think ear tubes are that big of a deal considering dd1 had heart surgery last spring. I know any time a kid has to be out under has risks, but if it's needed, there will be Zero hesitation.

@sourlemon your fiend is a TW. would you really rather your kid suffer repeated painful ear infections that can permanently damage their hearing vs a 10min surgery?!? Does your daycare send them home for ear infections? at ours as long as an ear infection is documented they can stay at daycare even with a fever. (Maybe thats my MFFC... my kids don't get to stay home for ear infections... sorry kiddos momma has to work!)

@sourlemon We did tubes for DS2 at 10 months after months of changing antibiotics. Best thing ever. He’s had 2-3 ear infections since, but they clear up quickly with regular strength antibiotics (it’s been 6 years).

@wabash15 I'll give my friend a little grace because she doesn't have kids or know much about ear infections and their impacts, but even after I explained she still thought I was mean for wanting surgery.

So we had a flu outbreak 2 weeks ago so our daycare, directed by the health department, extended their flu season policies until October (when the new flu season policies start). Anything over 100.0 gets the kid sent home. They have to stay home for 24 hours no matter what, and 24 hours after starting antibiotics in case of reactions (though we cheat that sometimes). Sometimes, if we know for sure that she's sick/fevered, we keep her home and get her to the doctor so she can go the next day. Instead of being home for 1.5 or 2 days.

@sourlemon ugg thats frustrating... if you can document that the fever/illness is not contagious I don't see why they have to stay home... Fx she holds out till her appointment this week.

ffmc (or flame away, everyone will do this at some point)....we totally drug the kids up before daycare (Tylenol or Ibuprofen) on days like today when they are "borderline" but we don't think it's something contagious. They typically make it until lunch or nap, then we only have to leave work 2 hours early.

@sourlemon 🙋🏻‍♀️ Also guilty. When DH and I were both working full time we spent all our vacation days with sick kids for almost two years straight. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do... chances are they picked it up at daycare anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

@sourlemon IMO a quick routine surgery like getting ear tubes is much preferable to repeated antibiotic use (b/c side effects suck, plus the potential for resistance). Plus...way less pain and suffering for the kid overall. I’m all for it. You’ll get no flaming from me.

@sourlemon as I first read I could not BELIEVE you'd drug your kids because it didn't seem like anything would follow "before daycare." I'm over here thinking you drug your kids every.freaking.day.

My SIL is throwing me a sprinkle in two weeks and I am super grateful but it feels silly. It's my second baby and other than this one being a boy, IDK why I said she could when she asked. In April when she started to really plan it I was going to tell her nevermind but my husband told me not to. Now I just feel stupid. I also feel like I would have regretted cancelling it because this pregnancy has been an emotional rollercoaster and because of that I feel like I have felt a ton of guilt for not celebrating baby Emmett like he deserves. I just feel like everyone that goes will be like.. why are we here.. she just had a baby 2.5yrs ago... ugh it just gets worse as it gets closer.

@moon1417 I’m also having a sprinkle thrown for me in 2 weeks and have been feeling really weird about it. I know my friend who planned it feels indebted to me for
throwing her baby shower (which was super nice if I do say so myself) but it just seems unnecessary to me. I kept the guest list super small— it’s like 7-8 of us and at a restaurant... I’m hoping it turns out to be just a fun afternoon with friends.

@sourlemon no judgement here! It’s so hard to scramble to find alternate childcare/take personal time when kids are sick.

@sourlemon the whole dosing thing reminds me of the flashback June has when her daughter isn't feeling well and she gives her Tylenol before school. Then when her daughter gets a fever she gets interrogated by the social worker at the hospital about it. The whole thing made me super uncomfortable to watch, but then again, most of The Handmaid's Tale is!
And on that note, definitely watch seasons 2 & 3 (3 starts later this week!). It's so good!

@jmesue1030 I kept the guest list small too.. so I hope that helps with my anxiety day of. I think the anxiety comes from knowing people don't like showers, I grew up going to showers with My sister and my brothers wife and they complained every chance they could. I'm making my husband come to the whole thing because it was part of the agreement, if I said yes to having it, he would come.

It's being thrown by my husbands brothers wife and they keep trying to add people. I only invited my Sister, SIL (my side), three of friends (one cant come:), My 2 SILs (his side), MIL, AuntIL & CousinILs to try to keep it small and just close family. They just added MILs cousin or something... at this point I'm like whatever.. sure. I too hope it's just a get together with no games etc. I just feel really awkward getting presents. Unless it's diapers. If everyone just got me diapers I would be super happy haha

@sourlemon maybe Im a bit judgey but reading your post I was thinking, "Why hasn't she seen an ENT yet?" When DS had frequent ear infections that antibiotics stopped working well on, we requested an ENT referral and planned to point blank ask for tubes. Thankfully the ENT looked at him and said due to excess fluid and pressure being off even when not infected tubes were the way to go for sure. Best decision ever, DS stopped getting infections and his speech improved within a week or two. I do not understand why people are so opposed to tubes. Hopefully you are able to find some relief for her soon!

On the sick kids topic. I sent DD to school a few weeks ago knowing she had an ear infection and took her to urgent care as soon as she got out for the day. Right now DD has a complication of another health problem that means she is vomiting almost daily, I am still sending her to school despite it being against policy. All of you who have 2 parents who work outside the home are rockstars when dealing with this. I literally have no idea how we would handle things if I did not work from home with a flexible schedule.

My bitchfest for the day... We do a lot of activities at the Y and one of those is swim lessons. It works out great because at this age both kids can be in the water at the same time but in age appropriate classes. For locker rooms there are 4 choices, adult women, adult men, women that may or may not bring children and men that may or may not bring children. The "family friendly" ones only allow opposite sex kiddos until they turn 6. Usually this is fine because DH and I tag team the process. Tonight however, I feel like crap and he is taking both of them. DD is 6 and not capable of fully changing herself, locking her belongings, using the bathroom, rinsing off, navigating her way through long corridors then getting to the pool and doing it all in reverse when she is done. She has some motor delays that mean she sometimes needs help and lacks some of the executive functioning skills she would need as well
Andplusalso most kiddos her age would be better off with a parent in the locker room. DH plans to just take both kids in with him and I doubt that anyone will say something about a petite 6 year old but what about older kids with special needs? They just spent a fortune on useless rennovations when a truly family friendly locker room should have been a priority.

@sourlemon have you ever tried chiropractic for the recurrent ear infections? I know a lot of people that have tried it with success. But I know it’s not a typical go to route for something like that either...

@allycat11 they should have exceptions or not have an age limit on family friendly bathrooms... Our pool has family rooms that are single rooms so all 5 of us (nearly 6) pile in at once.... I hope you feel better soon.

@Allycat11 our pediatrician office won't refer to an ENT until they hit 6 ear infections in the same ear in a 12 month period, or 4 in the same ear within 6 months. When we hit 4 total, it was 2 in each ear so they wouldn't write the referral. 2 weeks later when we hit 5, I begged for a referral and they did it, but it clearly states on there that the primary pedi does not see the need yet. Then it takes a while to get an appointment...we are in a cancellation slot which was 4 weeks out from when we got the referral, if there wasn't a cancellation slot available their next appointment wasn't until August. It's crazy here (small town). I do plan to flat out request tubes, but since we still haven't technically met the requirements, insurance may not approve it.

Before this stretch, she hadn't been sick since she was 9 months old. At 4mo she had pnuemonia and over the next 5 months had 2 ear infections. But no where near the minimum requirements. We asked about tubes then but were completely denied even the referral. But then she had a long stretch of being healthy...until March when she got the flu and the ear infections started.

@moon1417 re:gifts for sprinkle— my friend keeps asking me for ideas and getting on me for not making a registry. I told her I don’t want to ask for things just to ask for things and we have pretty much all the baby gear we need... so I basically told her diapers would be the most appreciated gift or things for me to use now or after the baby comes like restaurant gift cards, a prenatal massage, or money towards house cleaning...

@Allycat11 I don’t think I would feel comfortable with a 6 year old having to do all that alone in the locker room. Is anyone really checking ages? I think I’d just have him take her to the family one anyway.

@sourlemon All of the red tape with medical stuff drives me crazy, I am so glad you were able to get the referral. DS only had 4 in probably a 10 month period but it was literally every time he even had the sniffles. Our pediatrician gives out referrals very easily though.

@jmesue1030 yeah no one checks so DH is just taking her into the male family friendly one. It just stresses me out that someone could say something and if they did we would be asked to leave. And it pisses me off for special needs families with older kids. In my opinion most people would rather supervise their 6 year olds in a locker room too.

@Allycat11 This is a major issue for parents of special needs children. My brother is severely autistic and mildly retarded. Since it was mostly me, him, and mom running errands growing up he went into the women’s bathroom for a looooonnngg time. Now, if I have him with me I send DH or my oldest son with him or stand (nervously) right outside the door. I would think the Y would have better family accommodations. Even my six year old will still come in the women’s if we are somewhere like a sporting event where I don’t “trust” the bathrooms.

@Allycat11 that is not okay! Our rec center has 2 private family changing rooms. No age limit on what child can be in there. They allow opposite sex kiddos in the locker rooms until 4 years of age but then they have to use the family changing rooms. I would definitely talk to them about it and see what can be done.

My MBF is how unconcerned our local law enforcement is about a harbor seal pup on the local dog beach. First off its an extremely high traffic beach, in the center of town and allows off leash dogs. I was on the phone for 2 hours today trying to get someone to come protect this little bean from all the dogs on the beach. Apparently Fish and Wildlife doesn't "do" marine mammals (seriously wtf?), State parks never showed up, Sheriff office didn't answer the phone, 911 transferred me to State Parks, Local police showed up, whined that they had to walk across the beach to look at it and then LEFT. Marine Mammal center has a few volunteers in our area and they were definitely concerned due to the location of the pup. I stayed at the beach for 2 hours waiting for someone. Finally got to leave after speaking with the volunteer that showed up. So ridiculous. This is a federally protected species. Why do we pay taxes for all these salaried LEOs and they don't even care?

@sourlemon we got tubes when my daughter was 17 months and it has been night and day. Our referral was also delayed because she had a lot of back to back ear infections and if they are within 30 days of each other it’s considered the same infection or something like that. With this baby if we run into the same thing, I’m just going to push for it earlier. The ENT himself made it sound like insurance would have covered it earlier. I was scared for the surgery though so I didn’t push, whereas now knowing how easy it was and how much of a difference it made, I’d do it ASAP.

@Allycat11 family friendly changing rooms should not have age limits. That’s not right. The whole point is for a family to use it because the regular locker rooms don’t work for the family for whatever reason. Our Y has a family changing room, but there’s no bathroom in it, which makes it kind of pointless and a hassle.

@Allycat11 fwiw my oldest is 5.5 and very independent and very physically capable and I still don't think he could do all those things by himself. People who make up these age requirements don't seem to know anything about kids.

And isn't a 6/7yo safer and more comfortable with their parent in a mixed sex setting than being forced into a single sex change room with no one they know to help them or protect them if needed? I wonder what the reasoning is in setting a strict age limit instead of "parents' discretion"

ETA I remember my aunt, as an adult, got stuck when her wet bathing suit got twisted as she was taking it off and needed assistance from my mom to get it off. I've definitely come close myself trying to get a wet bathing suit off if it twists the wrong way that limits the stretch. Team "stay with parents" over here.

I am really glad to hear that I am not alone in my thought process here about changing rooms. DH said even the aquatics dept. Head who knows our family was in there at the same time and did not say something. It clearly is not strictly enforced but it bothers me that there is a huge sign stating thst rule and that they could enforce it at anytime.

Mini-bitch. I’m on a hike and I went off-trail to go hide in a glen and pee because I’m 847625282 weeks pregnant and this random middle aged couple randomly followed me off trail! They maybe thought I was leading them somewhere super cool instead of a lame pregnant potty break? So now I’m sitting under a tree posting on the Bump pretending I just needed a rest, while they putter around the glen and I’m willing with every atom of my body for them to get back on trail. Omg I think they’re leaving!

My kids are so very aggravating today. We all need a break from each other. My mom usually takes the kids on Thursday but she's been out of town catering to my dad's selfserving assholeness for like a month. So the kids have gotten no break from me and H and we haven't gotten a break from them (aside from work for H, but he works at home more often than not.) And we are just all going crazy. The boys just fight with each other all day. And DD is just cranky, whiney, and very high maintenance.

I had my hospital tour yesterday of the Labor and Delivery ward. I pre-registered with the hospital over the phone last week with their rep, who hosted the tour. There was a group of five of us pregnant ladies and our partners waiting for the tour in the lobby. I'm almost 32 weeks and still definitely not showing whatsoever. The host lady came into the maternity ward lobby, she asked my husband and I if we were there for the tour and I said yes, and then she gathered us all in one spot. The host lady then begins her tour, says "OK pregnant ladies...." and then turns to me and says, dead faced, "you have a baby under there right?" in front of the group. Not jokingly, no smile or laugh, just more or less accusationally? I was taken aback, nodded, and she continues with her spiel. Maybe I'm just sensitive, but it made me feel like self-conscious shit that I didn't belong there with the other women and their gorgeous bumps. She had already asked if we were there for the tour, I just don't see why she needed to say that in front of the group.
