Anatomy Scan Discussion

Re: Anatomy Scan Discussion

  • I totally don't understand the measurements. Abdomen was 6 days ahead, femur 5 ahead and head 2 behind. That makes due date only one day ahead per the ultrasound figures for some reason? I was concerned but doctor had zero concerns. IDK.

  • Not sure where else to put this! My OB called me tonight and they’re referring me to MFM for my next scan since I am now considered high risk. I’ll be getting scans every 4 weeks and then starting non-stress tests weekly at 36 weeks. I’ll also be having a CS for sure. So glad she called and we have a set plan! I’m still nervous about the unknowns and risks, but I feel like I’ll be in good hands!

@blitzybee with my first she measured 5 days ahead with all 3 ultrasounds I had with her. They only changed my due date at the 12 week dating ultrasound. After the other two the doctor just told me I would have a big baby. She ended up being born a week early and weight 7lb 13oz.
  • @zuuls_mom is this because of the cord issue?  I’m glad you have a plan in place and baby girl is going to get some extra monitoring!
  • @zuuls_mom aside from the student anatomy scan, I loved working with my MFM! Their equipment is very high tech and they can distinguish things SO much easier than an OB. I feel like I always left her office with very clear answers and a move forward plan, which is vital when you’re expecting a little one! You’ll be in very good hands. They will work closely with your OB too so everyone will be on the same page

@zuuls_mom that's good! I know the situation isn't ideal, but it sounds like you are in good hands who will watch everything closely.

  • @zuuls_mom I’m sure you will be well taken care of at the MFM. They are taking all the necessary preventive precautions to ensure a healthy baby, healthy mom outcome. ❤️
  • Thanks, ladies! Even though there is still some fear, I really do feel a lot better knowing I will be taken care of and watched closely! I'm just hoping I can avoid bed rest this time (high BP with DS) since I have such a limited amount of leave! I know I shouldn't worry about that, but I don't want the extra stress of money on top of everything else.

@RedBreast35 yeah, it's the cord thing. They have to monitor her growth and the blood flow since I am at risk of pre-term labor and abruption.

  • (@zuuls_mom sorry I called it "the cord thing" - it was too early in the morning to remember the real name  :D)
  • @RedBreast35 no worries, my friend! It's not really an easy to remember thing. I had to look it up like 50 times before I could recall it automatically as Velamentous Cord Insertion. I kept wanting to call it Vermentous hahaha

  • @mamaber2204 Same here except I'm expecting a spunky girl. DS was so easy. This is so exciting as more and more people get their scan  :)
  • @LJMoon6 so glad the level 2 looked good! I'm in the anterior placenta club and it's a blessing and a curse to not be able to feel much. Hope the extra fluid goes away soon! It'a always so hard not to get nervous about things like this so I am glad they are being reassuring.

  • @janat1717 - there is an error of measurement with ultrasounds. It’s plus or minus like 7 to 10 days. That is why they take the average of all the measurements. Typically they are only concerned if there is a huge gap and may have you come in later to check things but a lot of the time it is just different because of Baby’s position.

I have my anatomy scan tomorrow. I’ve looked at him a bunch so I’m pretty sure things look good and already know it’s a boy. Accurate measurements will be nice since I’ve done a couple and they seem to be a weeks ahead. I’m hoping to get a good profile picture for our Facebook announcement.
  • I had my anatomy scan on Friday and was told I have marginal previa. Has anyone had this before? if so, was there anything you did for it?

On a positive note, we found out we are having a girl and she is measuring right on average!
  • @pj_soccer congrats on baby girl!!  I have a low lying placenta this time, which is similar but not quite as close to the cervix as previa.  My OB is going to monitor with at least one extra US and we hope that it will move up as my uterus grows.  I was also told no sex (sorry DH.)  I'll be a RCS, so it's not really an issue for me, but I think they can be a problem for vaginal births.
  • calliahcalliah member
@pj_soccer There isn’t anything you can do for it. In most cases, the placenta will move up as the pregnancy progresses. They will probably bring you back around 28-30 weeks to make sure it moved.
Depending on your doctor, if it doesn’t move they may do a C-section if It doesn’t move. Baby can have a hard time getting by it if it’s too low.
If you notice any bleeding or spotting, call your OB. That’s pretty common with previa but they’d probably want to do an ultrasound.

@LJMoon6 my son had extra fluid in both his kidneys at the AS, and we had scans every 4 weeks to see if it resolved. Like you, I was told very common for boys and that usually it resolves. I hope yours does but my sons did not, and I found that very upsetting at the time of his birth, since no one discussed with us what it “meant” since they assumed it would resolve before birth. My son is 2 now and he’s fine, but he still has fluid in his kidneys. PM me if you have any questions about his monitoring before birth, after birth and since then!

  • @LJMoon6 I just got back from my AS and the same issue came up with one of the kidneys having extra fluid. They're bringing me back in at 28w to start monitoring size and said they'll continue to keep an eye. For now she said it was minimally over the limit and didn't seem concerned.
  • LJMoon6LJMoon6 member

@creamcheeseplease Thanks for reaching out! It helps to hear other peoples experience and to know we're not alone. They just said that we would meet with a pediatric urologist if it didn’t resolve so I feel like we’re prepared for that. What were the measurements for your son? Ours was 5.4 or something like that (normal is below a 4). They said anything above a 10 usually needs surgery but anything below will likely resolve either before or shortly after birth. I guess my question for you is what kind of impact does this have on your son’s health? Or is it just extra doctors appointments? Since your son is 2 and it still hasn’t resolved do they think he’ll have to deal with this for the rest of his life?

@kiddiesandkitties I'm sorry you're going through this too. We can commiserate together! Interesting that they’re bringing you back at 28w and yet they don’t want me coming back till 32w. Ours is mild too. I think measurement was at 5.4. They didn’t seem all too concerned about that number. Do you remember what yours was?

  • @LJMoon6 I don't remember what his measurements were exactly, but I know one of the kidneys had a very low fluid level, like just above 4 and the other was higher, definitely higher than your baby's. After he was born, they did a scan in the hospital and determined he still had fluid in both kidneys, and then a pediatric urologist came to talk to us in the hospital. He was scanned again at 3 months, and then around every 6 months since then. There hasn't been any significant change in his fluid level at all. The urologist now said he'll see him once a year/he'll be scanned once a year, but that he doesn't expect anything to change in the near future. He said he will be watching more closely when he hits puberty and grows more, that may cause stress to the kidneys that cause problems. The urologist basically said that years ago no one would ever have known they had this because the scans couldn't pick it up and there would have been no reason to scan him as a child. So its hard to say if it will affect him later or if he will just be this way always. My son also had some other tests as a very young infant (3 months or so) to see if his kidneys were eliminating fluid properly/at a normal rate, and his function slightly slower than normal, and to see if there was a blockage in the kidney causing the fluid retention. He also sees a pediatric nephrologist (the urologist deals with the form and the physical kidney, and the nephrologist is more the function). He sees her every 6 mo now as well, and he has bloodwork every 6 mo to see if his kidney function numbers are normal or higher. His have been normal but in the higher range. He is supposed to have his BP monitored at the pedi's office as well every time he goes, as that can also be an indication of kidney issues. So in short there have been a lot of monitoring to see "if" there will be an effect on his kidney function, but it hasn't affected him in any other real way. We do try to make sure to watch that he is peeing enough, enough wet diapers, etc. Most people I know with this have had blockages and can have the surgery, but because my son's fluid retention doesn't seem to have any cause like that, there's no need for that. My son is 2 now.
  • @RedBreast35 @calliah thanks for your insight. They scheduled me for another US in 4 weeks. Also told me no exercise (sex included :/ ) until I get cleared. I'm an extremely active person, so not being able to exercise is not fun at all! Fingers crossed out moves out of the way.
  • @pj_soccer Oh no regarding no exercise!  What are you doing to keep your mental health in check while you're off your game?  That would be really hard for me, too!  Fingers crossed that it moves out of the way soon so you can get back to it!
  • @mamaber2204 I'm honestly trying to stay focused on other things to distract me. Last night was a little tough since I had to miss my favorite gym class. We are currently redoing our kitchen so a lot of my focus has been on that. This weekend we are planning on starting the registry so I've been researching everything.  Perfect timing on the registry board!
  • I was also told my baby has a bright spot on the heart. I have been so nervous about it. However, I have been reading like a mad woman and so many woman have said they found 1 marker that ended up being nothing. Its helped put my mind at ease. My dr said to not even google (like I can control it lol) since its so rare that 1 marker actually means DS.
  • Do you have regular periods? My baby is also measuring 5 days smaller. As did my daughter. However, I also have PCOS so I highly doubt my real due date can be based off my cycle.
  • We had our anatomy scan on Wednesday last week. The tech was having some difficulty with a few of the measurements due to the baby's position.  He had me get up and walk at one point.  He was unable to get a good view of the cavum septum pellucidum in the brain and said that the doctor may have me come back.  Well, I get a call from the OB later that day and they wanted to refer me to MFM for a "second set of eyes on it."  We happened to be going out of town first thing on Friday and they couldn't get me in before then.  Needless to say, this has been kinda hanging over our heads while on vacation.
So we followed up today for another US with MFM.  The tech immediately visualized the cavum septum pellucidum.  However, they discovered that I have a velamentous cord insertion.  The doctor was pretty nonchalant about it and is going to leave monitoring up to my OB (if my OB wants to do it or have the MFM doc do it).  @zuuls_mom Were you put on any restrictions?  The MFM doctor said I can continue to exercise.

@sparkles5275 no restrictions yet! They did say I likely wouldn’t be able to lift DS as I get closer to delivery, but that was probably a given anyway since I already struggle some now lol. I just have to watch out for bleeding. I’m glad the doc was nonchalant about it! Did you have any progesterone issues at the beginning?

Had a weird experience at my as and just want to bring it up and see if anything similar has happened to you guys. We went in and baby looked great, but the tech said she couldnt get a good shot of my placenta and cervix so went vaginal. Then she kept switching back and forth from vaginal to abdominal. I noticed she was pressing a button and it looked like she was look at like blood flow? Idk. I get into my docs office and she said "you have a low lying placenta". I actual had marginal previa with my son and they rechecked it at 28 or 30 weeks and it had moved snd it was a non issue so i immediately was relieved and figured that was what the weird back and forth was for. Fast forward to yestersay and my docs office calls and says they want me to go ahead and have another us at my next visit (3 wks) to check on my low lying placenta. I asked if anything had changed bc the doc during my visit said we wouldnt need to check it unt 28 or 30 weeks and she wasnt even remotely concerned. The nurse hesitated and then said after reviewing the full ultrasound they want to continue to monitor it closely and if theres anything to worry about my doc will discuss it at the next visit. I keep telling myself if it was something major theyd have asked me to get in like today or next week, but i still feel uneasy.
  • @zuuls_mom I didn't have any progesterone issues.
  • @sparkles5275 that may be why I’m getting so much extra monitoring. I’ve had a really bumpy pregnancy and had a loss prior to this so they may just want to be extra cautious.

  • I went back for my follow-up growth scan since my little guy was small at 20 weeks. He is still pretty small (20% overall, but small head and abdomen). They are having me come back in another 4 weeks to check again and will send me to perinatal specialist if he is still small. All of this testing makes me so nervous! I just want him to be okay and grow, grow, grow! Anyone been through this or going through this?
  • @ready2go_phd I went through this with DS. Official diagnosis was iugr. He was born at 37 weeks weighing 3.5lbs. He's currently a happy, healthy about-to-be 6 year old. I will be happy to answer any questions.
  • @mommyshark13 I would definitely like to pick your brain. I just sent you a message :)
