@oklahomak - It's definitely more prevalent in the private schools - I imagine in public schools around here you do not see that kind of "gaming the system." Our preschool is private so the transitional K would be paid for by me. Our state does have a state covered PreK program, but that's only available at the public schools and is traditionally a lottery.
This has been on my mind a lot lately but I thought it would be weird to bring up since it’s so far off!! lol apparently not! we toured a preschool today that has a 5 year old preschool room that is basically kindergarten readiness for kids who aren’t ready at 5. This topic came up with the teacher from that room and she informed me that our school district has an August 1 cutoff anyway so there’s really no option to send this baby early (assuming we stay where we’re at the next 5 years) both my husband and I were older for our grade and both preferred it that way so I don’t think we would have ever strongly considered sending this one early.
I dont know which thread we had but this has come up once before...never too early to worry about kindergarten! haha.
I'm a late summer baby and was the second youngest in my graduating class of 650ish. I loved it. This kid will be born before the cutoff so unless that changes over the next few years, he will also be among the youngest. I prefer it that way...graduating before turning 18 means that there is still some parental control. My older brother turned 18 before graduation and the day after his 18th birthday, he refused to listen to my mom and go to school. He moved out, dropped out, and got in more and more trouble. And there was basically nothing my mom could do.
@MamaK225 if it’s a daycare with an actual curriculum, I’ve found it doesn’t make a difference. We have some around here that start phonics at age 1 along with foreign languages. Those kids come in well prepared and ready along with the school based pre-k.
@peachy0709 lol. I don’t mind. I know that IQ tests don’t always match academics (I’ve had kids that were low academically but were gifted). As far as kindergarten readiness, what topics did they say were covered?

But the highest academically and most mature child I had in Kindergarten was a late August boy and this year, my lowest child is a late August girl. All this to say, I wouldn’t worry until they’re 3 or 4 (and even then they can mature). Things to look at: what do they know academically (letters/sounds/counting), are they ready to focus to learn (we moved around a lot but there’s still a routine and structure to be followed), do they want to learn (some kids that aren’t ready don’t want to do it yet just because they’re too immature)
@purplg8r - supposedly, it looked at: vocabulary, identifying letters, visual discrimination, phonemic awareness, comprehension and interpretation, mathematical knowledge. Maybe average is okay? I just wish I had more to go on. I will say I have always worried about her in terms of "test" taking - in her old PreK, they would sit down with each kid individually daily and have them identify the ABCs and a word that starts with that letter and she was just so not having it and would not even try. It's so opposite how DH and I are that I wish I could understand how to help her.
@peachy0709 - I absolutely am with you. DD1 gets SUCH anxiety when being "quizzed" on comprehension and other academic-esque subjects. And then plays dumb or too stressed to answer, so we try to bolster her confidence, which I feel is kind of backfiring. I'm trying to find articles about how to deal with that because both DH and I are natural test-takers and don't stress about those sorts of things - and never had issues with testing, despite having some strong anxiety in a variety of other areas of life.

I can already see that DD2 is definitely more like me and DH and enjoys when we are asking her lots of questions that she has to answer. DD1 would get to upset if she got a wrong answer to the point that she will just shut down and not-even-two-years-old DD2 is like, "Huh, interesting, I didn't know that, ask me again so I can get it right this time."

I don't think pre-K was a thing back in the early 80s when my sister and I were little ones. We weren't behind academically or socially. Maybe that's because our Mom started working with us on numbers and things like that early as well as we were into a bunch of community activities. Thanks @purplg8r for mentioning that. That's something else we will need to look into now.

@purplg8r - 6 months ago, I would have said average was about right for her on those topics. Now, however, with the program she's in and the leaps we've seen, I figured she'd be a bit higher (not like, genius level, she just turned 5, but I do think she's more than ready for kindergarten). Of the topics above, I'd say her phonemic awareness is not very strong, although she knows all the letters. I have no real concerns in the other areas, just more worried that she clammed up in the testing. The other reason I think it's bothering me is that the school is not a new location for her - it's part of our church and she actually is in the Kindergarten classrooms every Sunday for Sunday school. Writing this out makes me feel like I'm overreacting, but I just don't want to be one of those parents who the teacher says "we have a problem/need to focus her here" and I'm like "THIS IS BRAND NEW INFORMATION!"
@peachy0709 knowing all her letters is a great thing before K! I wouldn’t worry too much now. See how she does the first month and then set up a conference with the teacher to see if he/she has any concerns
