Breast Feeding - Wins, Woes and Worries

Re: Breast Feeding - Wins, Woes and Worries

  • @wabash15 I definitely second kellymom.com! I referenced that site so many times!! There’s a ton of great info there. I also agree with not moving up nipple flows. My son is 13mo and still gets a bottle before bed (whole milk now since we aren’t nursing anymore) and he’s still on size 0 nipples with no issue! I don’t have any more advice then what these ladies have covered. We struggled starting out and I stood firm and got my son’s tongue tie clipped even though the LC we saw didn’t think he needed it. Trust your gut and seek a second opinion on things if you need to.

  • I apologize if this has already been discussed but has anyone tried to BF with implants? I had a breast augmentation at 19 and I’m wondering if I’ll be able to even try.
  • @emqbee - I was only able to BF for about 6 months before transitioning fully to formula (with A LOT of pumping) and my boobs were definitely bigger than they had been when I delivered ... and never went down. Even though I lost all the baby weight before I had even been discharged. My sister said she gained 1 cup with her first and lost 2 cups with her second, so maybe it changes with each child ... ? I plan on getting a reduction at some point anyway, so it would be kind of nice if they would go back to a decent size and the doc only have to worry about skin.

One thing I'd like to add for any larger-breasted ladies out there: start with the football hold and then adjust to others as you and baby get more comfortable. At first, I was so worried I was going to smother DD1 that I was partially impeding her latch, but then we just figured it out. Football was the only thing that got us through the first few weeks until I had more confidence/learned more techniques.

+1 to loving the football hold for newborns. I found it to be the most comfortable during my c-section recovery. Eventually we switched things up a bit, but it was our go-to position for quite a while.

  • People think we become mothers when we give birth but the truth is we become mothers the moment we start calling our babies to us in our thoughts, dreams and prayers. Some paths are short and some are so long that you can easily forget where you were headed.

  • @aecm - You're absolutely right, I didn't even think about that. It is definitely the most "comfortable" of positions when recovering from a c-section. A lot less pressure and irritation (newborns wriggle around a lot!) than a more-traditional cradle or cross-cradle positions.

Side-lying is also an easy-ish position as you learn what works for you and baby, just be careful not to fall asleep if you do decide on that position (soooooo easy to do!), and to do so in a safe location (i.e. not on a typical couch - possible roll-off or falling into the space between a cushion and the couch).
