Re: Favorite Names Thread

  • @TheSouffleGirl were definitely leaning towards Kennedy. Sawyer is a lovely name tho. My SO picked ember and he's pretty proud of it

  • @rennie1108 I like Harris as a NN with Harrison, Harry was my Granddads name :)
  • I need help please. How would you pronounce Alia? Like ALLY-a (said quickly) or a-LEE-ya? Is there supposed to be a hard pronunciation of the LEE? I don't want to be saying it wrong

    I would say uh-LEE-uh.

  • I’d also go with uh-LEE-uh
  • So hard pronunciation of the LEE? as opposed to Aaliyah where there's no hard pronunciation? Sorry, it's hard for me to explain in words!

    So Uh-LEE-uh rather than Ully-uh?

I pronounce Aaliyah the same as Alia. I have never heard a name pronounced Al-ee-uh.

  • Yes, I’d put the stress on LEE in Alia. In Aaliyah, I’d try to pronounce the y, so uh-LEE-yuh.
  • Ah so I've been saying them both wrong! I love all the ways I thought it could be pronounced, but since I was saying it wrong I guess I could be setting her up for problems with other people saying it wrong  :/
  • So DH finally gave me a list of names on Friday and I was in tears...Leroy, Murrell, Otis, Tobias, Roger, and Sebastian.  Apparantly he liked some of them because they are family names.  He didnt care about family names with our daughter so why now? Plus he has a family name already, the last name.

We are sooo far apart on names, ugh.
  • @tmblickley I could work with Tobias and Sebastian...but what are your preferred names?
  • @tmblickley, I always thought Sebastian was cute with Bash as a nickname.  What are your top choices?

  • @tmblickley I like Tobias and I know a little Sebastian and he goes by bash. It’s cute enough. I don’t dig the other names though.
  • @tmblickley I kept trying to sway DH on Sebastian as an option, but it was a no for him. I think it’s cute and I’ve also seen Baz as a NN for it. I would love to hear what your favorites are though!
  • My favorites are Ethan Carter, Jackson Hunter, Parker Avery, and Noah.
  • @tmblickley hmm. Would you be open to Noah Murrell? Murrell sounds much better in the middle position to my ear. Parker Sebastian also works for me.

It seems you like last names as first names and the -er sound for at least one name, and -ur- in Murrell has that. Roger has -er too, but doesn’t mesh as well with some of the other names you’ve chosen.
  • @tmblickley I'm sorry but except for Sebastian and Tobias, the names your husband likes are flat out terrible. I like combining one of the names you like as the first name and one of his family names as a middle name. Or tell him if he doesn't come around, you'll pick whatever name you want because they ask the mom what the name is. (I'm joking guys. Mostly. ;) )
  • jlklec19 love all your boy names! Especially Theo James. I love that you can have a simple/easy/classic middle name AND it has sentimental value. My Dad's name is Herb so not going there! Plus we're having a girl. lol

TheSouffleGirl I loooove Lucy Georgette but see you settled on Lucy Catherine which is super sweet too (I'm behind on this thread)

We are a bit stumped but I'm not too worried about it... contenders are Sage, Ivy, Eva, Fern, Poppy (my fave but no one else likes)... and a new name out of the woodwork: Zinnia!

  • @himolly88 I love Ivy and Zinnia. Before we knew we were having boys I had Dahlia on our list so clearly I like flower names.

  •  @himolly88 I love Ivy, Zinnia and Poppy!

@MRDCle I pitched Rose, Ivy and Zinnia to DH for DD and he wasn’t a fan. Although since this one is Liliana I still kinda get a flower name, lol.
    this is my backup acct.

  • @himolly88:  Thanks!  I'm a teeny bit sad we didn't go with Georgette, but we can always save it for next time. :)

I think Poppy is super cute!  Kind of like a flower version of Pippa (one of my faves that we'll never use b/c, well, Philippa.)
  • @himolly88, I love Sage and Fern.  And hey, if you go with Sage you could say it's a nod to your dad anyway since it's a cooking herb .

  • @himolly88 thank you! I’m very glad that we settled on Theodore (although I definitely call him Theo James when I talk to him). My dad calls him “Junior” because he’s excited that we’re naming the baby after him.

I really like Ivy and think Zinnia is beautiful (I’ve never heard that one before).
  • I think I’ve finally convinced DH to go with Evelynn Bleu. And now I’m second guessing my choice lol But with my last two I always said Ill know their name for sure the moment I hold them in my arms and that was 100% true
  • kangstadt I hadn't thought of that - that's really funny!!!

  • blueberrymomma as I am hoping to decide baby's name once we have her in our arms, too. I plan to have a "shortlist" and then see what feels right. :)

  • Late to the party but I know a teenage Zinnia and love it. More than her sibs’ names.

I feel like Pippa could also be a Penelope but google and nameberry tell me that isn’t very common. And I’m not sure Philippa or Penelope will ever be on our short list seeing as we’re not in England.

Madeline/Madelina is growing on me for the next kid as a nod to DH’s grandmother/gg-gm/cousin/niece - one of those frequently reused names - but he doesn’t have very fond memories of his grandmother so it may be off the table.
  • @lyse01 DHs cousins daughters are Penelope(penny) and Madeline(maddi) So I think both are good options for little girls
  • @lyse01 oh my word noooooooooo.
  • @lyse01 just cruel.  She will be bullied until she gets old enough to legally change it.
  • @lyse01, as a teacher, I would never look at that spelling and pronounce it like that... oh my.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @lyse01 my only thought is “why?” Poor thing
  • @lyse01 and all, I don't understand why people want to be unique?!  No one will ever spell or pronounce her name correctly ever.  And if it's pronounced the same as Kaitlyn then why not spell it that way?  If she's being called that then who cares how it's spelled - unless it's spelled stupidly, of course.  I'll never understand wanting the unique factor.  It just makes everyone's life harder.

This is like the creative way to spell your own name on your friend’s 7th grade science textbook’s brown paper cover. Not your child’s birth certificate.

oh, and there are like 36 standard ways to spell [C/K]a(i)t(e)l[i/y]n(n).
