Re: Weekly Randoms, 1/21

  • @MamaK225 the one I received was called QNatal, but yes — it screened for the three trisomies (all negative, thankfully!) and for sex of baby. I got my results in a week, which was a huge surprise! I was expecting no earlier than this friday.

@Lotus_2008 thank you! I was floored when she said girl. I’ve always been a big believer in mama intuition, but mine was way off this time! There’s always a chance the bloodwork just missed the Y chromosome, but the chance is really small.

  • @zamora_spin yikes! my mom doesn't know yet, but my MIL does. My sister concocted this crazy story where they'd run in to each other (they don't live in the same city) and my MIL would spill the beans. That's really odd that she was messaging your dad. Did your DH respond?

@lilmamabebe3 I'm glad to hear things went well with your friend. it is such a tough place. I'm glad she was honest with you and said she was sad. sounds like a strong friendship.

@WinchesterGirl oh no! hoping you don't have to stay overnight. that is miserable. GL and be sure to update us.

  • @zamora_spin - Gotta love family. I don't know why people want to be all up in others' reproductive business.

Oh no, @WinchesterGirl - so sorry to hear. Do they think it's HG or just severe morning sickness? You're earlier in August, aren't you? So closer to the beginning of the second trimester? Hope you feel better soon!

@dogmomma096 That sucks! Why do people feel like they need to guess? You’re trying to make it fun and exciting and they’re ruining it.
  • @Allycat11 - Yikes. Some people have no idea how awful the things they say and do really are and how they impact others. I completely agree on NEVER asking anyone if they're pregnant. If someone is AND they want you to know, you will know. It's no one else's damn business.

@WinchesterGirl - Feeling better this morning? Hope they didn't keep you too late.

  • @MamaK225 There isn’t a thread. I’m with you on MYODB! My husband is always like why don’t you know this, this, or that about your friends and I’m like because. If they wanted me to know, they would’ve told me. I don’t really need to know what someone’s husband does for a living or if someone has siblings. He thinks that is sooo strange.

@Allycat11 I’m seething after reading that. She’s lucky you haven’t flown off the handle at her.

  • @peachy0709 - so I’m not 100% sure this would work with prenatals with fish oil, but for regular fish oil supplements, the trick to reducing side effects (like fishy burps) is to store the capsules in the freezer. Might be worth a try. Maybe throw a few in a ziplock bad in there and see if it works before you throw the whole bottle in there 😂
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • @peachy0709 I take Zahler brand prenatals. What I like about them is that they have a lot of what I need and I only need to take two gel caps per day. They have iron and DHA as well as the more bio-available form of folate, methylfolate. The box says the DHA is from fish oil but I have never noticed a fish oil taste or smell at all, even with my current super sniffer. I will go home and smell them again to make sure tonight and report back. I've heard that the Smarty Pants brand (which come in a gummy) is pretty palatable while pregnant, they also have fish oil. I've tried them and again, never noticed any kind of fish oil taste/smell. The problem is DHA is pretty highly recommended to take during pregnancy and fish oil is the most common source. If you search on Amazon for "vegan prenatal with DHA" you will find some prenatals that have a plant based DHA source.
  • I'm currently taking Ritual's prenatal and they were fine until recently and I get that fishy taste later (yuck).  I had no issues with fish oil with DD1, but with DD2 I had HG so I honestly didn't even try to take pre-natals (possibly FFC-worthy??) because there was no use until the third trimester.

  • So I'm a huge weenie and can't take large pills (except, apparently, after a c-section #pillcutter) so I always buy chewables. I use SmartyPants and I LOVE them. They have DHA, Omega3s, etc. And they're available for subscription on Amazon. They taste great and don't turn into a huge gummy mess or have a weird vitamin-y taste. I also buy their kid's vitamins for DD.

  • Need opinions please.

We have a ton of lunch meetings where I work. A ton! This week was a 4 day work week and I had 3 and that's not abnormal. The company provides lunch for us for these meetings and they typically just order a variety of stuff from whatever place (Panera, Piada, local pizza shops, etc.) and everyone picks something as they come in. I told our department assistants that I was pregnant as a secret (because of food aversions and restrictions) and they have come to take my personal order every time. They really don't have to do that and I have been so touched and I am so grateful for their thoughtfulness.

So here's the question: should I get them an amazon gift card with a thank you note or should I nominate them for an award? It feels like a more personal touch which is why I am thinking of the gift card, but it is always really nice to be called out for a job way, way well done publicly. The awards here are really exciting and everyone wants one. I am just not sure which way to go. You can't do both.
  • @lilmamabebe3 What kind of awards are they? Is it something your job does every year - would it be happening sometime soonish or a long way from now? I think it’s great to acknowledge the extra effort anyone is making to make you feel more comfortable, especially with discretion. Either choice sounds great!
  • @lilmamabebe3 Hands down the amazon gift card and a thank you note. No to the award because their job well done was going above and beyond for you in a way that was outside of the norm of job descriptions (not business related at all), imo.

  • @MamaK225 just a heads up. I was doing the subscription on Amazon for the Smarty Pants and found that I was actually paying a lot more at times. I switched to just ordering it on my own and have found it saves me some $$. Amazon often has the Smarty Pants vitamins in the deal of the day.

So, I take the Smarty Pants right now, but lately they've been too sweet for me. They also don't contain iron, and I've had to add in an iron supplement separately. I was told to not take the iron and the vitamins at the same time bc the vitamin may reduce iron absorption. I'm considering a switch when this bottle runs out. The main thing my OB stressed about vitamins when I went in for my preconception visit was to make sure there was folic acid and DHA.

  • @lilmamabebe3 I guess it depends on how public you want to be... as in will the awards happen before everyone at works knows your pregnant and or your ready for them to know your pregnant? If so I might do the gift card, otherwise the work accolade sounds like a great option.

  • Thoughts on a thread for NT/NIPT Discussion and another thread for Baby’s Sex? Since some of us are starting to have these early screenings and getting results?
  • The awards would be next month. But if I nominated them now they would know now.

I think I may just do the amazon gift cards for now and look for a way to nominate them for something different. I have just been really blown away by how discrete and kind they've been.
  • @lilmamabebe3 that is a tough call. I think I would do the gift card because, as you said, it is more personal. It sounds like they have honored your request for discretion and it would be nice for them to know that you've notice and appreciate it. also, as other have said, would the awards be after others know, would the department assistants have to wait to hear how appreciative you are?

  • @Avrilmai I have always heard that about iron too, that it's better to take it separately or with vitamin C. I've always had low iron (frequently turned away from giving blood). In my pre-ttc life I would often forget to take my iron pills. FWIW, since taking a prenatal with iron my iron is generally not low, so it seems to be doing something (I probably don't get a ton of iron from food as I don't eat meat). It's definitely something to watch though, my sister had horribly low iron while pregnant and was on a high dose of separate iron but it didn't seem to help.
  • @zamora_spin I don't eat a lot of meat, I don't really care for it. I actually started taking a prenatal vitamin before we were TTC since they tend to have more iron. I randomly worry about having a low iron count in pregnancy. Just one more question to put on my list for my OB!

  • A note on prenatals, especially if you switch, make sure you are taking the right amount. I had only taken one kind ever (1 pill per day) until last summer when I switched to gummies at the advice of my OB. Didn’t realize until two weeks in I was supposed to be taking two per day. 🤦🏻‍♀️
