Re: New Year New Randoms: Week of 1/1

  • @nolemomma14 happy birthday to your LO!

@foodislove ugh 😖 so sorry you have to deal with this mama!

  • @foodislove I'm sorry about your DH's job :( I hope they resolve this quickly.
  • I don’t think military pay was affected, except the coast guard, from what I’ve read. And the VA was funded through 2019 back in September.
I think it is really crummy and so selfish to think that winning the wall is worth denying people of their incomes. A really good friend of mine, her husband works for NWS, so they’ve been furloughed now since day 1. All that for something that won’t make any impact apart from the environmental impact it will definitely harm.
  • @hakele Good to know for the rest of the military. I have lots of friends in the Coast Guard so I was thinking of them, and all of TSA is working without pay. Also, I live in D.C. and single parents out here that work for Fed are basically screwed. I really hate that Trump is claiming all fed employees support him in holding the budget hostage to his wall.

    @mamanbebe +1000
  • The Dems in Congress defo put their feet to the fire yesterday... so we’ll see! @mamanbebe
I don’t think he is going to handle the checks and balances from the SoHouse very well....

@foodislove I agree so much. TSA has been calling in sick, they are already staffed by a generally lower paid staff who can’t afford to not receive pay. The outcome of this will be crippling from just a couple weeks. The IRS is on 12% staff, and that will have ramifications for a year + while they try to catch up.
Hes holding America hostage.  And I think they’ll make him pay for it.
  • I'll spare you guys the pics because I know not everyone like snakes but I'm super proud of my oldest. We found a harmless ribbon snake and tonight he finally overcame his fear and held it!

We come across a ton of snakes on our property so the last few years I have had to overcome my fears and educate myself so I could teach my boys. My 2, 4, and 6yr old came around immediately. 8yr old not so much until tonight. He even wanted to be the one to carry it to a safe spot and release it into our garden!!

  • Also if anyone else is in an environment with tons of snakes and is afraid of them, I highly suggest looking up a local snake identification group on FB. I've learned SO much! These groups usually also have people who will come relocate snakes for free!!

Amazing resource to have, especially if you have kids if for no other reason than to be able to identify venomous snakes in case anyone ever gets bit and you need to get to the hospital quickly.

  • @nopegoat I wish I liked snakes. I try to spend time at the snake display at Petco to desensitize myself. They're just so...slithery :confounded:

DH is having a guys' day with his best pal who's possibly getting a divorce. They're having fun and his friend needs the companionship, but it's been over 6 hours. I kinda want my husband back :/
  • @nopegoat yay for your oldest!!! I grew up with a ton of snakes and have come to appreciate them, but I'm not going to go catch one.

One thing to keep in mind is that snakes eat mice. IMO snakes are easier to control and less destructive to a home than mice. Therefore we never kill snakes unless they're poisonous!

@cindler exactly! Some also eat slugs and pests that harm our garden. Some snakes even eat venomous snakes! They are very beneficial to the environment!

  • Should we start an inappropriate questions/comments thread? I've been lurking other BMBs and I'm surprised we don't have one yet. I can think of a few I've gotten so far :unamused:
  • @hestia14 my H is off this weekend and he told me he is going to help out neighbor with a few things tomorrow. It's going to be an all day thing I know it. I totally sulked about it today but at least it motivated him  enough to get a few things checked off his ever growing honey do list lol.

And yes to the inappropriate questions/comments thread!

  • My husband still isn’t home from work. He likes to “calm down” for like 2 hours after he gets home from work and it takes him an hour to eat something. He’s going to keep me awake until 3am and I’m not going to be happy about it. He was supposed to get off at 6
  • We cleaned out our garage today and I must have seriously over done it. I’m not cramping but every part of my body hurts. My back, pelvis, and legs. I feel so silly since I’m like 2 days pregnant but I’m in so much pain.
  • So there was a fire in our apartment yesterday while we were both home. It was a grease fire that started in the kitchen. I was nearest so I discharged the fire extinguisher but that made it worse and the flames erupted. My husband made us evacuate right away, we left without shoes and wallets. Long story short still dealing with the aftermath but the fire was contained. We are displaced to a hotel right now but my questions for the group are, 1. Is it bad that I inhaled some fire extinguisher dust/fumes? 2. Is it bad that we stayed for a few hours after we were allowed back in to salvage some things? I don’t feel like I inhaled smoke as the sprinklers had settled that before we went back inside although there was obviously a smoky smell.
  • @julybaybay I’m so sorry about the fire and I’m glad you made it out safely. I don’t know that anyone here is qualified to provide answers about the safety of fire retardants during pregnancy but I’m sure if you place a call to your prenatal care team they would be able to help.
  • @julybaybay I think it's pretty badass that you discharged the extinguisher on the fire. You most likely used a CO2 or a "dry chemical" extinguisher. The CO2 tank would have a distinct cone on the hose and basically shoots dry ice at the fire. This type poses zero inhalation risk. The dry chemical is ammonium phosphate (or ammonium sulfate) and leaves a telltale blanket of white powder on every surface (doesn't dissipate like CO2). This material can irritate your lungs but it's better than being hurt by fire and smoke. This one time exposure is highly unlikely to affect your baby. Calling the fire department might give you some reassurance.

So sorry you're dealing with all of this right now. Keep us posted!

(I'm a chemist and we do fire fighting training.)
  • Thank you @Cbeanz. I appreciate the advice. I believe it was the type that shoots the white foam. There was no cone, it was a fluffy, shaving cream like discharge. I’ll check when we get back over there. Thank you also @mamanbebe, I have put in a message to my OB. Just curious if anyone else had to do this/was present when one discharged and if there were any serious issues or if the OB demanded you get medical attention right away.

@julybaybay my H is in charge of testing/refilling fire extinguishers and all the fire/lifesaving equipment on ships and oil rigs. He said with the limited one time exposure you should be fine but absolutely check with your OB for peace of mind.

Also huge hugs!! That's terrifying! ❤️

  • @julybaybay I’m so glad you guys are safe. Fires are terrifying and so destructive. I’ve unfortunately seen many in my day as Red Cross staff. But also my neighbor almost burned down his entire house last summer with some wet grass clippings, sawdust, and chemicals in his trash can on the side of his house. Let me know if any of you would like to learn about spontaneous ignition fires!
Also, when I was 13, my grandmother set our camper on fire. All I remember is the smell was just awful and it took so long to wash the smell out of all of our stuff. Good luck with all of that. And that you can get back home and that things will be mitigated well for you at the apartment.

@nopegoat I’m cool with snakes from a distance. I don’t freak when I see them, but I do turn and go the other way. I worked at the zoo for a while and spent about 10 months in the education dept with the snakes. Feeding the really scary ones! The more senior keepers would hold them with the snake pinned stick, and I would toss the dead mice and chicks into the bin! Ahhh!
  • Had a bonfire on the ice tonight with the neighborhood! We call it the fire and ice party!
  • Got some planner stickers yesterday at Erin Corden's store. I have a regular planner, but her stickers are really nice for sprucing it up! Any other paper planner people here? Whether it's bullet journaling (I tried that and failed) or doing weekly written plans, etc.?
  • Did my first workout after being so sick and sedentary for over a month and a half and I FEEL SO GOOD. I was totally dreading it. I was exhausted going in. But I’m so glad I did. I feel so productive that I did something for myself. Wow I want to do it again. LOL
  • @foodislove I’m a sucker for all things planner related lol. I have an Emily Ley Simplified planner. First year using it. I also bought extra stickers for it!
