@mihaelams1 congrats! @swanbrooner it really is weird how different the instructions can’t be for the same test! Passed the 3 hour!!! But was really close of the first hour draw, so feeling like I probably need to be more mindful of my sugar intake and get back on the regular exercise!
@lelkcot Yay! Congrats! I've been obsessively checking my patient portal, but they never posted them last time and called me instead. That's the result I had last time. With DD1 they said "technically you passed, but it was close and you should still limit your sugar and carbs." If I remember correctly they said you could fail one hour as long as the other two were ok.

@meggyme I got the results at like 7:30 last night, which I was not expecting, just assumed I wouldn’t get them until today. Dr didn’t seem concerned at all, when I asked if I should be more cautious, she was just said “yes, that’s a good idea I’m general when pregnant.” 🤷♀️ Keeping fx for good results for you too!
I’m hoping I passed my one hour, results were sent to my doctor yesterday and they are available for me to view tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed silence = good news!

No results today, so hopefully that’s good news since they’re not rushing to give me the lowdown on GD before I leave town. Frustrating, but I’ll call tomorrow if I don’t hear by lunch.

Welp... I have GD. The nurse that called told me to avoid carbs and sugar and focus on real foods. I'll see a MFM doc when I get back into town who will walk me through everything else. She said to expect some extra monitoring toward the end, extra ultrasounds and non-stress tests.

@meggyme well that’s a crappy start to Christmas. Hopefully you can easily manage it with diet and exercise, and it ends up not being a big deal for you.
@meggyme that sucks. echoing @lelkcot i hope that it is easily manageable and doesn't make the holidays too complicated for you also. I hope you enjoy your travels though!
@meggyme So sorry girl! Silver lining from those I know that have had it, you don't gain quite as much in the end. Hope you have a great holiday with your travels!

I logged in to my online account and noticed my glucose test results are back. I haven't received a phone call yet so fingers crossed but looks like mine was 126? Mow I wait to find out what that means! Appointments every 2 weeks and growth check US every 4 weeks due to BP
Thanks everyone. I'm pretty bummed out but not really surprised. With DD1 I was told that my 3hr results were technically passing but that they were preparing to change the parameters and I'd have failed under those new parameters. Well, I guess that's the case now. I'm trying to convince myself that it's all my placenta's fault but I can't help but wonder if I could have prevented it by eating better or finding the energy to work out more. But I guess it is what it is and it's better late than never to start focusing more on those things. I didn't get too much guidance from the nurse so I hope that means I'm just borderline in the wrong direction and it will be easily managed with some diet changes. I hope none of you have to join me.

@meggyme I'm sorry, definitely not good news especially with all the Christmas food around. I hope it can be easy to manage for you and doesn't require any insulin shots. Know that it's nothing that you could have done differently, it's just like a lottery.
@Bride2b1213 I think that means you passed. Mine was 125, and at least for my clinic the upper limit was 134.
@meggyme oh girl I’m so sorry! I had it last pregnancy and what my midwife told me is “it’s not your fault it’s just the placenta is changing the way your body processes sugar” that really helped me! I was working out in that pregnancy and eating fairly healthy. I actually ended up only gaining 7 lbs total the whole pregnancy and my son was 6 lbs 12 oz (which is tiny and I guess GD can cause big babies). He was/is healthy and I managed it with diet/exercise. Enjoy your holiday with your family and try not to stress/worry about it in the meantime. When you meet with them to discuss everything will seem overwhelming but it’s really not that bad. You’ll get to see LO a few extra times so that’s kind of nice and in a few months it’ll all be over and your LO will be in your arms. Please let me know if you have questions about it! I take the 3 hour next Friday myself so we’ll see what comes of that.
@ashley14598 thank you! That is very helpful. Actually looking at some of the side effects for me and LO was a little scary, and then telling my mom (a former NICU nurse) didn’t help much. It’s all a little overwhelming, especially since I was looking forward to relaxing during our vacation and now have this to think about. But I’m trying to frame it as extra motivation to do better with eating and moving.
I really appreciate the encouragement everyone, and I hope no one else ends up with GD.

Just now catching up on this thread...@meggyme I’m sorry about the GD results, especially now as you’re heading off to your holiday vacation 😫. Joining everyone else in hoping it’s easily manageable, and doesn’t cause too much undue stress.
@meggyme my coworker who had GD said she loved the GD diet she had and actually misses eating that way! Hopefully you can find some foods you enjoy and have a lovely rest of the pregnancy.
I was diagnosed with GD diabetes a few weeks ago. I’m 5’3”, active and very thin so I didn’t think I’d get it (my sister is obese and didn’t get it) but my body just can’t process sugar and carbs well right now.
I’m able to control it mostly with diet and have found that taking my dog for a walk after each meal REALLY helps and I can eat more carbs that way.
I have to take insulin at night to control my fasting levels, but it’s not a big deal at all. Of course, I did ivf so needles don’t scare me at all.
Heres what I eat: I usually have two scrambled eggs and half an avocado with a little salt for breakfast. Half a whole wheat muffin with peanut butter for a snack. For lunch: A fourth of a Quest pizza, a spinach, cucumber, strawberry smoothie and handful of almonds. Or roasted asparagus. An apple and some string cheese for snack. Dinner varies. I started ordering diabetes friendly recipes from sunbasket, but I still need to eat small portions. For before dinner snack—usually popcorn and almonds.
Now that my numbers are pretty steady, I’m experimenting more to see what spikes my levels and what I can handle.
I live in nyc and my parents are in town for Christmas so we always go out for nice dinners, so that kind of stinks. But I’ll try to order grilled salmon and veggies if they have that on the menu. I’m making tacos one night for everyone and I’ll just skip eating the tortillas.
anyway, getting diagnosed and having high fasting numbers was so frustrating and it’s the only time during this whole process (including many failed ivf treatments) that I cried. But I feel like I’ve figured it out and it’s not bad now at all. Honestly, I feel like I’m eating all the time. Sometimes I’m just not hungry so that’s a little annoying. During those times I just eat a handful of almonds or a piece of cheese.
@purpleteacher82 I also took my test this morning since I didn't have to work. Anxiously awaiting my results. So far only my hemoglobin result has come through
@lindseyb918 I don’t have access to online results so I’m not sure when I will know. I have an Appt. on Friday so I’m guessing they could tell me then if I havent heard. My dr. did tell me that if I get a phone call then I probably failed whereas if I get a letter in the mail that’s a good sign!
@meggyme the picky spouse / child does make it tough. My coworker who enjoyed the diet had a diet like Knottie posted above where it was pretty consistent every day- not really recipes. She said that artificial sweeteners were a lifesaver too for cravings.
Not sure if this is helpful, but DH and I did the Whole30 diet last year which is low glycemic index. Some of the recipes we loved were :
Also loved a Korean egg dish that is sautéed garlic and onion, one 28 Oz can petite diced tomato, then add 3 eggs and gently stir to distribute. Very similar to "eggs in hell" but the egg is distributed. The egg makes it really rich and creamy.
We also loved salads and roasted veggies with drumsticks or fish. One thing that we learned really quickly is that if you don't have good healthy protein / fat with each snack or meal, you will be very hungry very soon.
@govanalyst86 thanks, those recipes are helpful. It sucks that I’m kind of at the mercy of others since we’re traveling and other than a ration of snacks I don’t really have much control over what we’re eating. Luckily my parents have done a low carb diet before and know a lot about it, but there’s still a lot of limited options when we visit other people.

I passed the 3 hour but the Dr's message said "your 1 hr was pretty high so please watch your carbs and sugar as you could develop gestational diabetes later in the 3rd trimester - we will discuss at your next appointment". So, I guess I should be happy?
Look like I will be joining the GD Club. ☹️ I just got the dreaded phone call from my doctor’s office. I’m super upset at the moment and am trying to get myself into the head space where I am ready to be proactive about it. I have to take a class on Monday where I learn how to test my blood sugar and about diet. In the meantime, I have no clue what I should or shouldn’t be eating and still have lots of holiday events coming up in the next few days where there will lots of food involved. Ugh.
@purpleteacher82 honestly having it with my first pregnancy, I'd say eat what you want this weekend and start fresh on Monday with your appointment. A few days of a "non-GD" diet aren't going to be the worst. If you have any questions feel free to DM me. Fingers crossed yours will be diet & exercise controlled!
@meggyme So sorry to hear you have GD! As a prior GD'er feel free to reach out to me if you need. Do you have a diabetes center to work with? I'd say the nurse gave you some misleading information as you do not want to completely avoid carbs and sugars, it's really a balance thing, as your body can go into ketosis and start burning the fat in your body which isn't good for pregnancy, either. Mine was all diet and exercise and I didn't have any extra tests or ultrasounds for it, might be the doctor's office though. Honestly they put a bunch of fears in me about having a sick, sugar crashing, or huge baby and it was quite the opposite so hopefully it is the same for you. I was induced at 41 weeks with DD and they wouldn't let me eat anything because of the GD. By the time I delivered DD at 6:45pm without eating anything since 5am she actually had low blood sugar which led to being under the heat lamps for body temp, formula right away for sugars, and added heel pricks to test her levels.
My test is next Friday, I'll let you all know if I join the club again.
@purpleteacher82 I’m sorry you’re dealing with this too, but I’m glad to have a GD buddy. There is a GD support group on FB I joined that has been helpful to me, not just in figuring out the meal situation but also in seeing all the “sugar babies” that have been born by all different means, including med free and many with good sugar levels upon delivery.
@HoneyBear40 I just have a quick “eat healthy” phone call and what I’ve read online to go off. I think my initial reading made me go overboard on low carb and I was never full. I’m trying to not go completely without carbs/sugar but to balance them with proteins and fat. I wish I had gotten more guidance before I left town during such a high carb and sugar holiday time.

I passed my screen with flying colors 2 weeks ago, but am spilling glucose in my urine now. Doc says I get one free pass but may need to do go ahead with the the 3 hour. I was pretty bad after getting my negative screen so just going to try to reign in the naughtiness and hope that’s enough.

@meggyme Well if you have any questions let me know! With DD I had to work with the local diabetes center who taught me to track my food, prick my finger after each meal and track where my blood sugar was, and pee daily on a ketone stick. My FIL actually has type 2 so we became food & finger-prick buddies. Holidays are hard, especially because there aren't usually nutrition labels on holiday treats! The guidelines I had to follow were 15g of carbohydrates is 1 "point" and I was allowed 1 point at each snack, and 3-4 for each meal (depending on how my body handled what it was I knew how to cheat around it). Good luck! Peanut butter, nuts, and veggies were all my best friends! Oh! And sugar free jello for a treat Hopefully some of that helps you a little?
@HoneyBear40@meggyme honestly when you both start monitoring your levels you’ll better be able to figure out what your body can and can’t handle. I wouldn’t stress about any of it until you meet with the people from your practice and learn more information from them. And don’t get upset with yourself when you do start minoring it and find high numbers that happened to me too It does take a bit to figure out what to eat and when to eat it. Sometimes what works for one person doesn’t work for another person or what works one day for you doesn’t work the next day. Even though my GD was all diet/exercise controlled ... That was the very frustrating thing about GD about it was that by the time I got it all figured out I only had a few weeks left in my pregnancy anyways.
