Glucose Test discussion

Re: Glucose Test discussion

  • I've taken and passed the 1 hour twice (I'm not scheduled to do it this time until 28 wks).

My tips are to bring a straw and if you have any control over it (probably not) make sure the drink is cold.

Personally, both times I did the 1 hour I felt drunk for the last 30 min of the test and a period afterward but my blood glucose is usually on the low end of normal after an hour so I think my body just over compensates for the the sugar with an insulin dump.... This time I have to drive myself so I'm planning to hang out in the cafeteria if I feel wonky again.

  • I've only done the two-hour test. My practice schedules you in for the first appointment of the day, so you don't have to fast all day, and they recommend eating a snack right before bed to help with the hunger.

The drink was not near so bad as I expected. Sweet drinks are a less-than-once-a-month thing for me. I don't drink pop, coffee, tea, Gatorade, juice, energy drinks, etc. because I don't like them, and I expected what's been described to me as flat pop to be truly horrible. I had the lemon-lime drink, and it was ok. Yes, it was gross, but I wasn't barely able to drink it as I expected would be the case.

I didn't really feel sick after drinking it, but I definitely felt a bit weird. My head was just a little woozy.

Take a granola bar or some sort of snack to eat right after you're done. Chug lots of water during it, too.

@zionsmama85 That's frustrating! What is the point of a threshold if they'll still have you do the more complete test even when you're below it?? A friend of mine was 1 point over the threshold for the 1-hour and passed the 3-hour. Fingers crossed for you that you pass it too!
  • My doctor told me I could eat eggs for breakfast before, which I think really helped my stomach. The drink wasn't as bad as I thought either. Just tasted like flat, more syrupy Sprite. They gave it to me at my last appointment, so it was in the fridge and I poured it over ice, which also helped and I drank lots of water on my way to the appointment.
  • I just found out that I failed my 1 hour test so badly that they want to skip the 3 hour test and send me straight to a specialist. I asked if I could TRY the 3 hour test just in case some type of miracle could happen. The nurse did not seem very confident but I guess we will see! I already have high blood pressure and this is just one more thing to worry about!
  • @purplepirate09 That sucks. Hopefully you can pass the 3 hour test and they won't put you on too many restrictions.

  • @purplepirate09 that’s no fun, could you have eaten something prior that contributed to your 1-hour being so high? Either way, hope they help you figure out a reasonable plan to address it!
  • @lelkcot I literally ate nothing that morning and I ate a turkey burger for dinner the night before so who knows...
  • @purplepirate09 ugh, sorry. Well, hopefully they’ll still let you do the 3-hour to verify and if it does turn out to be GD, that they can help you manage it with out it being too much of a thing.
  • @purplepirate09 I’m sorry, that is so frustrating! I had GD last time and it ended up being a non-issue controlled by diet, for me it sounded scarier than it ended up being. I’m at my 1 hour test now ... hopefully I’m okay this time but who knows. My midwife just kept reassuring me with my first that it’s just that the placenta was stopping my body from regulating my sugar right. It was nothing I could control. That helped me feel a lot better.
  • I passed my 1hr test. Phew! But according to the rest of my bloodwork I’m anemic. I have an appointment Friday and I’m hoping I’ll just have to make diet changes to fix it.

  • @novelblessings I’m anemic too. I have an appointment tonight so we’ll see what they recommend.
  • @chocolatelemons Let me know how it goes. I haven't noticed any symptoms of it because they aren't extreme and are mostly normal for this far along. But it might explain why I would have a lot of energy to get things done a few weeks ago and then I would crash. Or I can only make it until about 10am before crashing and need coffee to get me through the rest of the day. I am really tired at this point and will huff and puff a bit if I get moving too much, but I figured I'm in 3rd tri now...so it's kind of downhill from here.

  • Just took my 1 hour and almost fainted 40 minutes in. Hopefully, I pass. I don't think I'd survive the 3-hour one.
  • @mayoduck oh no! I hope you feel better and are able to pass the test.

@mayoduck yikes! I felt a little weird this time around at the beginning of my 3 hour.  Good luck to you! I’m in the last hour of my 3 hour and the fire alarm went off about 30 mins ago. I almost freaked out thinking i would have to do everything again another day but they said it was a false alarm. Phew!
  • @zionsmama85 I think I would cry if they said I had to redo it because of an outside factor like a fire alarm.

  • I failed the 1 hour. 1 point over (141). They told me not to fast before and now I really wish I had fasted anyways. :(
  • @govanalyst86 that sucks. It's so crazy how everyone's tolerances vary. I fasted before my 1hr last time and failed by a couple points. This time I'm told to eat eggs and nothing else, so we will see.

  • I didn't know I was getting the glucose test when I went in for my appointment. They said they could do it then, or at my 28 week appointment. I asked if it mattered that I didn't fast and they said no. I had a bagel with cream cheese that morning, and I passed easily.
  • Whoa. When we set up the testing for January 4th I was told the threshold is 151...so strange.
  • I’m up this afternoon. I’ve been eating low carb all day and I’m hoping for the best.
  • @swanbrooner good luck!

  • I was told to have some protein prior to going in for mine. So I ate an egg with an english muffin and cheese slice. The day before though I ate way too much candy! I think the numbers vary by lab. The threshold for mine was 139 but my numbers were in the 120's.

  • The threshold for my test was 130(!) and I passed with 105. I had a slice of whole wheat toast w/ peanut butter & banana w/ a glass of OJ that morning. I also ate a KitKat the night before because honestly, I forgot I had the test the next day. Haha. My doctor had said no restrictions and to eat normally, so that's what I did. So yeah, I don't think this is helpful other than to say try not to stress too much. Haha. Good luck to everyone who still is awaiting results/testing!
  • My threshold was 130 as well. I scored an 82. I didn't know I was going to take it that day so I had toast with jelly on it, a pear, drank cranberry juice and ate a few crackers before my appt. Oh well.

  • It’s wild how everyone’s threshold is different I read on the American pregnancy association that anything over 140 is failing I scored 136 so I figured I was in the clear this time around. Now I’m reading here that 130, 135, and 151 have all been given as the “passing” mark. The nurse called half way through the day to talk to me but I didn’t answer or return her call yet. After the weekend I had I needed a minute to not deal with one more thing. I’m nervous to call her back because I hope I don’t have to go in to take the 3 hour.
  • I refused the glucose drink, I’m a STM. The first time around was terrible headache, nausea, dizziness, etc. I also did some research on the ingredients too:( So I opted for the finger prick 4x a day for a week (it doesn’t hurt either) and kept a food log. I am so glad I opted for the finger prick. I did need to meet with a diabetes educator which she informed me some women actually develop GD after 28 weeks, but OBs tend to never test again. Also some women make sure to eat ‘healthy’ and ‘low carb’ before the test which isn’t their typical diet and will skew the result. I also learned fairly quickly I needed to add a protein to every meal and snack to regulate my blood sugar (your Pancrease is working overtime). I was not diagnosed with GD, but huge eye opener diet wise. I don’t crave sugar either after adding protein to every meal and snack. My weight gain is so much better this time around vs my first pregnancy. I gained 65lbs first time and craved sugar/carbs. This time around 23lbs so far (almost 27 weeks). I also tend to do a prenatal protein shake for snack or before bed (Baby Booster brand). The diabetes educator gave me some great tips on food and what brands have more protein vs carbs.
I also learned if I don’t eat enough healthy fat before bed my glucose drops in the night and then surges before I eat breakfast so my fasting level was over the limit. Wish I had known I could say no to the glucose drink the first time around.

Yes, I have a close relative who had this happen. This was quite a few years ago. I know I get urine dips at every appointment, so I would think that would be picked up on, but perhaps that doesn't happen as much with OB/hospital care or in the past? Her baby was born several weeks premature, but still weighed more than 7 pounds at birth because of it! She (the baby) also had a number of complications immediately post birth (nothing long term) due to it as well.
  • @lovesclimbing Did your relative know that she had it when she delivered or was it discovered after the fact?

Afterward. She came out so huge, and then the doctors diagnosed it.
  • My threshold was 140 and I passed the 1 hour with a 98. I’ve heard that some docs opt to do the follow up screening if you test above 130 to be safe.

Before my 1 hour, my doc did not encourage any fasting. She did, however, advise to eat a high protein meal with veggies and lay off carbs and sweets. She also suggested going first thing in the morning - which I definitely thought was a good call if you have the option to plan ahead.

If you haven’t tested yet, to give you an idea, you’re handed a drink that’s 10 oz and tastes like super sweet flat soda (mine was orange flavored). You have 5 minutes to finish the drink, and then they take your blood 1 hour after completion. I highly encourage you to drink lots of water during this 1 hour waiting period.

Good luck to all of those who are testing soon and/or awaiting results!
  • @beachbaby0523 - the nurse that set up the testing for my next appointment said there will be no drinking allowed in the hour... crazy how that and the threshold vary depending on OB office.

Yeah, I was told only sips of water—too much fluid intake literally dilutes your blood and can skew the test, apparently. True for any kind of bloodwork, not just the glucose test.
