    @Bringmemylongswordho I love Lawrence!
My dad spells it Laurance. I think it looks nicer.

  • How do you decide between a family name or a name that has no familial ties?? Both DH and I like Thea, but it has no family meaning. I also love Elaine (call her El) it was my grandma’s name and she passed away young so I was the only grandchild to ever really know her. It would be a beautiful tribute... but I’m not sure how that name will age? Thoughts?
My mom is Elaine. It’s my middle name. I like it. I also like El or Lainey for nicknames for it.
  • My grandma was Florabelle - I love her, but I can't do that name to my kid.. So we are leaning towards Madeline, which is a book that she always read me as a little girl & I loved it. So kind of an ode to her?

I also like Caroline, but DH can't stand it.

  • @distraction What about Coraline?  My kids love that creepy-ass movie and the name has totally grown on me!  I also love Madeline.

  • @mermaidca I think We may have actually come to an agreement last night! Madeleine Rose — obviously we have plenty of time to change our minds but We both are loving this name & im hoping it sticks!

  • @distraction That’s such a sweet name!

I accidentally set us backwards on our name hunt. We’re big fans of Ruth, but now DH is saying one of the alternatives that I suggested (Rivka) has grown on him a lot and I think he’s wavering. Of course, when I asked him if he had any middle name suggestions he just goes ‘...it’s just a middle name, though?’.

Yes, but we still have to pick one. :disappointed:
  • @lin0442 I love Ruth! I wish we could use it!

  • @lin0442 I love Ruth! DH thought it was an old lady name (along with Edith) and shot them down.

I think DD has an old lady name but since he agreed to use it i just keep that to myself, lol.

I feel ya on middle names, it's the current dilemma here as well.

We might have a name. It's the closest we've come to agreeing on one for a girl. DD1's name is Eloise Nichole, which is DH's grandma's first name and my middle name. We decided we'd like to honor the grandmas on my side as well and chose Marlene for the middle name (it's both my mom and my grandma's middle name, and it's the name my mom actually goes by). DH really liked Anna Marlene, but I informed him that's both my grandma's first and middle and I didn't want to copy the whole name, so we thought maybe a variation on Anna.

So, what we're down to for the time being is Analise Marlene, and probably Ana for short. Not 100% sure yet, but so far it's the only one we've agreed on. Girl names are hard, man!

ETA: DH didn't know Anna is my grandma's name, because she doesn't go by either of her actual names. For some reason, she's always been called Mona.
  • @chrissdee love the name (and the mn combo), but I’ve never seen it spelled Analise (usually Anneliese or Annelise). Is there a reason for one n?

@chrissdee I think I would mix up Eloise and Analise a lot.  They are quite similar - and both very beautiful.  Too be fair I call my kids by each other's name plus the cats and H's so I might not be a good judge haha!

  • @lyse01 That was insane. I read the article and was thinking yea that's a pretty weird name but whatever until i got to part where she says the entire thing is supposed to be his first name. That woman is super duper bat shit crazy. And the reddit thread was hilarious.

  • @thatbaintforbetty And no nicknames, ever! I was in tears reading Reddit’s nicknames out loud to DH.
  • @lyse01 Yea, the no nicknames is ridiculous. Who would want to say that whole mouthful every time they called their kid? Also who doesn't have at least 3 made up nicknames they give their kid by the time they are like 6 months old?

Although my aunt named my cousin Matthew and never wanted have him to go by Matt, which is weird to me. We told her that was super ridiculous, and it even turns out to be what he prefers to be called anyways now that he's in his teens, lol.

  • @lyse01 Honestly, just because DH was the one who recommended it, over text, and that's how he spelled it at the time (and now he admits, "yeah, I wasn't sure about the spelling..."). Now I'm looking up "proper" spellings and I'm definitely liking 2 n's better. It's a work in progress.

@mermaidca My mom brought up the same concern with it sounding similar to Eloise. I think I'm doomed to mix up the names no matter how I go about it; I'm always getting DD and my dogs' names mixed up.
  • @chrissdee, I like the spelling but agree it sounds very similar to Eloise, although if you use a nickname it wouldn't have the same ending sound.  My niece is Analisia (ah-nah-LEE-sia) and goes by Ana (pronounced with a single n versus Anna).

  • @thatbaintforbetty my aunt did the same thing but for Nicholas. She refused to acknowledge anyone who called him by Nick. Now that he's an adult, that's all we call him. Her included.
  • @thatbaintforbetty @mrstmoose @lyse01 H's name is Gabriel.  If anyone calls him Gabe around his mother she flips.  "If I wanted to call him 'Gabe' that's what I would have named him."  Alright, then.  Good luck with that.

  • @mermaidca Like i sorta get what they are saying but that's just not going to work in the long run.

I wish my DHs nickname made that much sense. It's been a huge headache his entire life. His dad named him after the nickname of his fathers name, but calls him the nickname of his high school buddy.

i.e. It's like Thomas > Tom but calling him Joel.  No relation whatsoever and makes zero sense.

  • @chrissdee makes sense! Also, i don’t think the names are too close for normal usage. Perhaps in yelling but everyone gets tripped up there.

@thatbaintforbetty ha to Joel. My grandmother Anne spent decades as Petey, but the cute story there is that the hospital nurses nicknamed her and her twin sister as if they were boys named Peter and Michael. Without the cute story, it would make zero sense.
  • @thatbaintforbetty oh my gosh that's like my grandma's sisters. Aunt Teen is actually Aunt Jada and stuff like that. It's hard for us to keep everyone straight, ha.

  • We think that we have Twin A named - Harvey Neil. But we have gone through probably hundreds of names and we can't agree on something for Twin B and it's driving me nuts.

  • I love the name Finn!
  • We are going for Addyson Marie for our little one. I'm not super crazy about the spelling yet but I chose the name so I let my boyfriend choose spelling. Since we will call her Addy, the spelling is growing on me.

  • We’ve settled on Olivia Noelle. Olivia is becoming increasingly popular, but I absolutely adore the name. About the spelling for Noelle - Noel just seemed so empty to me. Can’t explain why. I’ve seen lots of names that end in -el spelled with the -elle ending, so I think it should be fine.
  • @lilpotatomama Noelle is a great way to spell it. Not sure if others see it this way but Ive always seen Noelle as the feminine spelling and Noel as the masculine spelling.

We’ve settled on the names and shared with our parents: Robert “Bobby” or Anna - my mom is pleased with the girl name as it is her grandmother’s name and I think she’s a bit surprised that we’re pulling from that side of the tree, as we’re not very close to her cousins - though apparently some are coming for Christmas dinner!
  • @wildcosmiclove I love Finnegan! So cute.
@lilpotatomama Olivia was on our short list; the only reason I didn't go for it was its current popularity. Beautiful name, great choice!
  • @lilpotatomama, @phoenix92885 is right, Noelle is the feminine spelling and Noel is the masculine.

We keep coming back to Liam Neal because it’s a family name and we both like it. The only reason we won’t commit is because we both don’t like to commit until the end because we may decide we like something else. Who knows. It’s also such a popular name.

We are thinking Raymond Francis. Being a teacher is so hard when it comes to names and teaching 13 years I have never had a Ray. His big sisters name is Natalia Rose
  • Ok. Still debating the names. Arg.

I want to to call him Jack. After the maiden name of my grandmom.

Hubs likes The full Jackson more. Which I’m fine with. So here are the top contenders.

    Jackson Archer

    Jackson Elliot

    Jackson Ezra

Archer is another family name. The others we just like.

Last name is W. So initials could end up as JAW or JEW but I’m fine with either.

  • @kbirchtree, I love Jackson Archer!

  • @lilpotatomama: We told DD we were thinking about naming her sister Lucy, and the next thing I know the mom of another Lucy at her morning program comes up to me in the parking lot and tells me how much she loves the name choice.  :D  Guess we're committed now!
  • @lilpotatomama love Olivia Noelle and definitely agree on the spelling
  • @TheSouffleGirl DD’s name is Lucy. We love it and haven’t regretted the choice in the slightest.
