Glucose Test discussion

Re: Glucose Test discussion

  • @HoneyBear40 oh wow! I definitely asked that question and was urged to drink water. It is crazy how things are done so differently depending on the OB/lab.
  • Loading the player...
  • I was denied water completely. I asked for some when I started feeling light headed and my vision was blacking out and they told me I couldn't have any until the blood was drawn. I would recommend drinking plenty of water before the test because sugar does dehydrate and you might not be able to have water during the test.
  • @mayoduck The nurse wouldn't give me water either. I though it was super strange.

Add me to the group who has failed the 1hr. I took it this morning. It's just an annoyance, I guess. This pregnancy was already showing very similar signs to my 2nd pregnancy in which I failed the 1hr, passed the 3hr, had hypertension and swelling throughout and then needed a blood transfusion after delivery. GL to those who have yet to take it or are waiting for the 3hr.

  • I checked my results last night. The normal
    range was 70-140. I got a 139...and a call to schedule a 3-hour next week.
  • @swanbrooner with DS I got a 139, too (my “passing” point was 135) and passed the 3-hour no problem.
  • My apologies if I misdirected any of you on the water tip. Sounds like my situation is the minority. In any event, I definitely agree with @mayoduck and suggest drinking water in advance.
  • This is all so weird I was told to fast for 2 hours before the test and to drink water. I was also told I could drink water during the 1 hour waiting period as well. Either way I’ll be looking to schedule my 3-hour in the next week or so. I already have to do lab work on Saturday with my primary care doctor and I can’t imagine taking more time off work right now to do the 3-hour. I’m hopeful she’ll let me take it the following Saturday. That will put me in a lab for 3 Saturdays in a row *eye roll*

I also had if it last time and controlled it with diet/exercise but I could almost eat anything without affecting my numbers. I hady 6 lb 12 oz baby boy 1 day before my due date.

I also was advised to drink lots of water during the test. I had the two-hour test. I had to fast after midnight or so the night before. Then the test is always scheduled as the first appointment in the morning so I don't have to be hungry all day. Take blood, drink the drink and then wait two hours and get another blood draw. They advised drinking as much water as possible because it helps your body process the sugar.

ETA: they also advised being well hydrated before the test as well, not just chugging during it.
  • For my 1 hour, they didn't say anything about liquids, but i also felt like 1 hr was a breeze so i didn't even have any to drink with me. I DID ask while i had my 3 hour (considering i hadn't eaten anything since the night before), and the nurse said a little was fine, but like someone else said, too much can dilute the results, so i had a few sips here and there, just because the 3 hour drink is so sweet i had a terrible taste in my mouth afterwards.
  • Got conflicting information from my midwife today after doing my early (26 week) glucose test. Despite one of the other midwives telling me to come in this week to do the test since we'll be traveling when I should otherwise be taking it, she said because I had an abnormal one last time that even if I pass this and/or the 3 hr I should still lay off sugar. Which I get, maybe she was just trying to say to keep eating healthy even if it is the holidays, but I'm annoyed that she seems to think I did it too early. She said many cases don't establish GD until 30 weeks or later. In my head I was yelling, "so why did I just do this today then?!"

  • @meggyme that’s frustrating. I don’t remember getting any kind of advice to change eating habits with DS even though I also failed my 1-hour. I was under the impression it was an either you have it or you don’t kind of a thing. And if it often doesn’t develop until after 30 weeks, why test between 24-28? Sorry you had to deal with that. Boo for conflicting information.
  • @lelkcot hopefully I'll pass the 1 hour test and it won't be an issue going forward, but it was definitely frustrating. I should get my results tomorrow or Monday, depending on which midwife's inbox they get sent to.

  • @meggyme hopefully you’ll get them tomorrow so you don’t have to wait over the weekend. I always hate waiting for test results!
  • @meggyme my doc did the same. I got my results from him via our Health insurance app, see below in spoiler. I kind of just took that as, hey eat healthy, since he always says things like that to me anyway.

  • @meggyme the conflicting info is so confusing! I have been dealing with it some too.

I just had my appointment with my midwife and asked her if I could take the 3 hour test at the same place I’m testing at on Saturday (having insurance lab work at a different health care system). She said I can and gave me a script but that it’s ultimately up to the lab if they have room or not to test me on that day. She said if I didn’t have GD with my last pregnancy she wouldn’t even have me take the 3 hr test with a score of 136 but because I had it last time she couldn’t dismiss it. She said I can either go take the 3 hour test or I can just start monitoring my blood sugar at home. She said her best guess is that I don’t have it this time but the only way to truly know is to take the 3 hour test.
  • Hey ladies, just had my 1 hour test earlier today so I'm jumping in here now. Anybody know how strict they are on the time limits for the test? They told me a 10 minute window, and I got my blood drawn at 12 minutes due to issues actually finding a lab tech who could do the blood draw. (I'll save that rant for another day, ugh.) I'm hopeful they won't make me redo it, but mentally preparing in case they do.
  • @diaphena idk for sure, but my blood was drawn approx 7 minutes late because there were 2 of us scheduled for 9:15. I’m hoping the extra few minutes for the sugar to digest is a good thing for my test.

  • @diaphena I have no idea how any of that works! I would think that if you pass it with flying colors they wouldn’t think twice about it if you are close on the number then maybe that will make a difference? Did the lab tech mention it?
  • @ashley14598 She didn't say much, just told me it was 12 minutes when I asked. I'm hoping the same as you, that my numbers are low enough that they aren't worried about the extra few minutes. We will see!
  • Lol well y'all, I definitely didn't pass with flying colors, so looks like my extra few minutes won't matter. My glucose level was right at 140. I'll be waiting for my call Monday to schedule my 3 hour.... Lucky me!!

To be honest, as much as I want to pass the 3 hour and not have to worry, I really just want to get accurate results so if I do need to treat for diabetes I can go ahead and do that. I was at higher risk to start with, so I've been mentally preparing anyway. I'm hoping I can schedule the next test at a time when I won't have to deal with lab techs going on lunch!
  • I have mine on Tuesday and was told not to fast/ eat and drink before I go / absolutely 0 drinking during the hour. Which is about opposite what I was told for DD’s pregnancy lol. I agree with @diaphena though, I want to pass but I’m not trying to trick the test so whatever. My husband was like oh we can do keto together for a few days and all your glucose reserves will be gone so you will definitely pass. I’m like, that’s not the point...

  • @mamakate1616 When I was googling about the tests to try to figure out if my timing was a problem, a lot of results were along the lines of "how to cheat the glucose tolerance test" and it really surprised me. I'm guessing people just don't know that untreated gestational diabetes is bad for their babies?? But that surprises me too!

@diaphena That's so crazy to me. If you're going to go through the trouble to 'cheat' the test, you might as well refuse to take it at all. Just because a doctor recommends it does not mean you have to agree to it.

ETA: Sorry you didn't pass the 1-hour. FX for you with the 3-hour (and everyone else who is looking to take it!)
  • Got the message in my portal that I failed the 1 hr.  Have to call the schedule 3 hr.  UGH.  Hopefully I pass the 3 hr like I did with DD.

  • Grrrr! I just took the 3hr on Saturday and logged in to the patient portal to see if my results were there and they were. And I big fat failed :( I have no idea what is in store since I've never failed the 3hr with any of my other 3 children. I will be impatiently waiting for that phone call from my doc Monday, I guess.

  • Yea, you can totally decline it. And also, if you do take it and fail it, you can also refuse to make the appropriate dietary changes, do the finger pokes, take insulin/medication/whatever. Why go to the trouble of cheating?
  • I'm anxiously waiting on my results from Thursday. If it turns out I failed I might ask to put the test off until after Christmas since my more recent midwife seemed to think I was taking it too early anyway.

  • Ok, someone help me out here. I just got my test results and it says the test is normal. However, none of these things that they tested for seem to be glucose levels. Am I reading it wrong?

  • @meggyme Did they take multiple vials of blood from you? I got what you tested above too but it was in a separate test results report from the glucose result. In addition to the glucose, my blood was retested for many things they had tested it for in the beginning of my pregnancy.
  • @mayoduck it's possible she took more than one vial, I honestly don't look when they do the draw. But it's been an hour since my first test came through and it's still the only result in my portal. It's identical to a previous "CBC" draw I had, which only makes me worry that they somehow forgot to actually test me for glucose and I'll have to go and do it all over again...

  • @meggyme I didn't get my results all at once so hopefully the glucose report is not far behind. Hoping you do not have to go back to retake the test! That would be infuriating!
  • @meggyme i just went to check my results paper and they tested my blood like the list you have but i also have a separate result sheet for blood glucose. I would hope they didnt forget to test for blood sugar since that is literally why you were there! Fx that the results pop up soon!
  • @meggyme I know in my testing results portal the glucose test comes through separate from any other test, so hopefully it’s just coming through more slowly?
  • 3hr test here I come. 😭

  • @meggyme ooo no - sorry to hear it. FX you pass answer it’s nothing more than an inconvenience!
  • @meggyme I understand the struggle. Good luck!
  • @meggyme FX for a good outcome for your 3hr test!!
